Summary: A very different Jim Carrey
Review: Expectations of a goofy acting Jim Carrey were quickly changed - this romantic, joyful, bitter sweet, quick paced movie is completely out of character and is excellent. This is the type of a movie you don't want to see end.

Rating: 5 stars
Summary: Not enough credit!
Review: I happen to be a person who likes to see an actor reach out and do something they've never done before. For Jim Carrey this is without doubt his best film. It's nice to see him do a completely serious film based on an era and subject that I like. 1951 and the subject...love and movies. The story is a little too complex to write, but go see it!

Summary: Never gets out of second gear
Review: The movie stalls out at the scene where the car goes off the road, i really expected things to pick up like in shawshank or the green mile but they did not. I really like frank darabont and will see his next film, it's just that this one did not live up to his other two great films.

Summary: Jim Carrey tries again
Review: For some actors an Oscar is an obsession. Jim Carrey is that kind of actor. The whole world embraced him to a popular comedian that he now earns $...million a movie. But that's not enough. Jim wants to be called a serious actor. I have to admit, he is a fine actor and he could've at least get a nomine for The Truman Show. But people let him down.
That's why he called in the help for the producer Frand Darabont, the man behind The Green Mile and The Shawshank Redemption. He had to make a good movie so Carrey could get an Oscar with the majestic. Sorry for Jim, but the criticm wasn't to good in 2001 and is dream fell apart.
The movie takes place in Hollywood in 1951 and Jim plays a young screenwriter who is on the bottom of his filmcariere. Life is waiting for him, but he pays his dues for his past. People find out that he once was a student of a communistisch meeting and that was a big sin back then. He loses his contract at the filmsturdio, a drinks away his self-pity and finds his cure in de bottle.
What causes a car crash in which he lost his memory. He goes to an unknown villages where people see him as a warveteran, an hero and he gets everything he wants, until he gets his memory back...
The Majestic is a good, but a too sentimental and too American story. On top of that the "Look-what-I-can-do" acting of Jim Carrey shows to much. Jim just keep doing funny, then you're being funny enough.

Summary: Hollywood take notice Jim Carrey can really act!!!!
Review: The previews were so compelling I knew I just had to see this movie. I was skeptical at first because Jim Carrey is mostly noted for his comedic performances. Boy, did I get a surprise in this one. This movie draws you into it and doesn't let go until the last reel. You feel good when you leave and Lawson makes you wish it were a town you could visit some weekend. I fell in love with the film the way people fell in love with Capra films. Familiar faces and new ones all made this film a joy to see. I am sorry the critics missed on this one. This film should be noted for its compassion and its love story. I'm glad I went to see it and will definitely get it when it comes out on video. Wish I could've seen it in a theater like The Majestic in the movie.

Summary: Words can't do it justice
Review: Words can't do it justice. Negative remarks made by critics are just that (negative). It may sound like a cliché, but ... SEE THIS FILM!!

I'm here because I loved it so much I was hoping I could ... purchase it on DvD...

This is one of the ultimates for those with nostalgia for simpler times. A real tear jerker too!

It deals with lost hopes and dreams of the families of so many American soldiers whose lives were lost in such a real way!

Bravo Jim Carrey! This is one of his best performances yet and he certainly has more than his share. I'm so impressed with his ability (in this film) to play such a serious, loving and (at times even calm) role! Awesome! What an incredible actor in an incredible film! Jim is right up there with some of the masters like Robin Williams.

In a word, "Magic!"

Enough already.. just see it! :)

Summary: The best kept secret of the year
Review: I think some of the critical reviews about this movie are unfair.
They say the plot is weak and it is unbelievable. So what! So is everything else Hollywood puts out.
I think the casting, the cinematography, the message, the music, the values, the acting and the whole feel of the movie was fanatastic.
I can't believe it didn't do better at the box office.
I can't wait to buy it on DVD when it is released.

Summary: Brilliant, brilliant, brilliant! RUN TO SEE THIS ONE!!
Review: An unabashedly old-fashioned movie-movie. Every frame is lovingly wrought -- Frank Darabont's a master filmmaker (The Shawshank Redemption, for heaven's sake!), and he's given us yet another one for the ages.

The script is a joy, punctuated throughout with wit, resonance and deep underlying meaning. Carrey's brilliantly understated performance is the centerpiece, Martin Landau shines in a poignant turn, and Laurie Holden is nothing short of miraculous in (I believe) her big-screen debut. The depth of the supporting cast is utterly astounding; standouts are James Whitmore, David Ogden Stiers, and Jeffrey DeMunn, and more.

All of my friends and I are completely at a loss to explain the discrepancy between the way we all COMPLETELY loved the movie and the way it was reviewed by many critics. In our group of seven frequent moviegoers, ALL of us placed The Majestic in our Top Ten films of 2001 (all of us in the top 5, as a matter of fact) and four of us placed it as our FAVOURITE FILM of 2001.

Take that, critics! You were dead wrong on this one, and the passage of time will affirm that. I predict that this will be among the most popular video and DVD rentals when it comes out -- I plan to pre-order my copy from Amazon.com today!

Summary: Darabont Strikes Again.
Review: Frank Darabont is the guy responsible for bringing THE SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION and THE GREEN MILE to the screen. He's one of the best directors in the business and he has created another gem with the delightful film, THE MAJESTIC.

The film takes place in the late 1950's. A cynical screenwriter, Peter Appleton (Jim Carrey) discovers that he is being investigated by Congress for "un-American activities." Peter is blacklisted, gets drunk, goes for a drive, and ends up falling off a bridge into a river. He is awakened on a beach by a dog and discovers he has amnesia. Peter "looks familiar" to everyone he meets and is eventually mistaken for someone else, a guy named Luke.

Jim Carrey is wonderful. He's a great actor with a Jimmy Stewart/Tom Hanks everyman persona. His portrayal of Peter/Luke has all the charm of Stewart's George Bailey.

Darabont has said he has always wanted to make a Frank Capra-type film. He has succeeded with THE MAJESTIC. It contains the classic Capra formula: lovable everyman rises to defend all that is good and wholesome about America, becomes a hero, and wins the girl. Darabont tweeks the formula a little, but remains true to the Capra system.

Several scenes are taken directly from Capra pictures. When Peter falls off the bridge and awakens in a new life, it reminded me of George Bailey in IT'S A WONDERFUL LIFE. When Peter testifies before a Congressional hearing, images of Jimmy Stewart as Mr. Smith in MR. SMITH GOES TO WASHINGTON kept coming to mind.

THE MAJESTIC is Capraesque in another significant way. Capra elevated the ordinary man in his films to illustrate the nobility in all and uphold all that is good in America. THE MAJESTIC does this, but it upholds one particular aspect of American life: it reveres the movies. It illuminates them and speaks of them as they were meant to be. People have always love movies, but movies have lost much of the luster that once made them grand. THE MAJESTIC seeks to reclaim the glory of times past by instilling the lesson of why movies are good.

Several critics have panned THE MAJESTIC for being too sentimental. Critics said the same thing about Capra and IT'S A WONDERFUL LIFE. In the end the good guys win.

Summary: Great Movie
Review: This movie had a great plotline and hopefully will inspire both older and younger viewers to learn more about World War II, patriotism, and courage to stand up for what is right. This is Jim Carrey's second serious movie, the first was The Truman Show, but i think he did a great job on this movie. There's a little bit of everything in it, everyone can enjoy it, and that is what makes a truly great movie.
