Summary: Culturally-Enlightening and Entertaining
Review: I found this DVD browsing the shelves at the video rental store. I had seen Margaret Cho stand-up routines before and particularly enjoy her impressions of her mother, so I decided to give this DVD a shot.

While I wasn't dying laughing throughout her entire performance, her true life experiences about her sitcom TV show and mother were well told and delivered. Like a good storyteller, she kept me following along through the sections that were meant to be more sincere than humorous. There were of course definitely moments when I could not help but laugh wildly out loud.

90% of her material is either gay- or Asian-based, so you may not be able to fully-appreciate the dead-on, true-to-life anecdotes and impressions if you've been living a sheltered life. Some may feel uncomfortable with the heavy emphasis on these topics, but Margaret tells it the way that only someone who grew up in a predominantly-gay neighborhood with Asian parents could tell it. Her facial expressions are priceless. Overall, this is the best Margaret Cho performance I've seen on video (actually film). I only rented this DVD, and I'd recommend watching it once just for the experience. This particular film is even used in colleges and universities in women's and cultural studies classes.

Summary: Holy Smokes! This is Funny!
Review: Margaret Cho's show "I'm the One That I Want" is so funny, I swore I was tearing stomach muscles from my nonstop laughing throughout her performance. Cho's humor, abrasive yet never hateful, pokes fun at her gay friends, compares straight porn to gay porn, and, most compelling of all, it details her struggle to gain acceptance as an Asian on prime time TV. In a climate that favors thin, blonde women, Cho had to work doubly hard to gain respect, but despite her efforts, she faced adversity at every turn. Probably the most humiliating blow was when one of the producers hired a consultant to help Cho appear to be "more Asian." This, compounded with her rotund figure, led to some serious self-esteem issues and began a steady physical and emotional deterioration. All of this may seem like too much baggage to be viewed in a comic light, but Cho pulls it off impressively and comes across as a true survivor. There are comedians who take cheap shots for laughs, but Cho aims high, and the result is this winning comedy that never disappoints.

Summary: Worth Seeing
Review: Margaret Cho's movie is extremely funny. It's also an occasionally uncomfortable viewing experience. She clearly has a major talent for stand-up comedy which allows her to ultimately triumph over some bad material. The one woman show which has been filmed primarily relates the story of her experience having a primetime network television series built around her stand-up act. Cho, who was in her early twenties at the time, was the first Asian performer to star in a network television series. She wasn't prepared for TV executives pressuring her to lose weight or their complaining that her show wasn't Asian enough or later that it was too Asian. She had to endure rude comments about her weight and racial slurs. The show was soon cancelled. Aside from brilliantly amusing people with her comedic skills, observations, and impressions of Asian stereotypes including her representation of her mother, she has a serious message about the racism and the images of female beauty that prevail in Hollywood and the rest of the country. It will be hard for most people to have the sympathy Cho feels she deserves for the indignities she's suffered because of the way she looks. It's hard to accept that someone as observant and smart as Cho was blind to the obstacles she would face pursuing a television and film career. That said, I did laugh out loud during this movie more than I have at any other in recent memory.

Summary: Fanning the flames.....
Review: Margaret Cho describes the rise and fall of her TV show "All-American Girl," her close ties with the gay community, being Asian-American, and her dead-pan impersonations of her mother. By far one of the funniest stand-up films around, what makes this a great film is that she lets the audience see her human side. It takes much courage to discuss the whirlwind of emotions as well as the physical and mental stresses surrounding her failed TV show -- the producers said she was too fat to play herself, she wasn't Asian enough, the alcoholism, the hospital time. To go through that hell and still come out strong and with your sense of humor intact and then want to share it...she is to be admired.

This is one film that I truly can watch over and over. Even though I know the jokes and though my friends and I quote some of the lines to one another (the line about Gwen will drive you mad!!!), I still laugh so hard and so loud and wipe the tears from my eyes. The DVD extras are also worth watching. A definite winner!

Summary: Doing the Asian Thing
Review: "I'm the One that I Want" is a hysterically funny and heartfelt chronicle of Margaret Cho's rise and fall (and another rise) in showbiz. (It's basically a taped version of her performance at the Warfield Theater in San Francisco.) She comes across as someone who overcame many obstacles in her path to success (racism, sexism, weight problems, substance abuse, criticisms from the Korean-American community, etc), someone who took the high road and used the all the negativity towards her as inspiration. Some of her routines get a little too stretched out (especially her impersonation of her mother), but overall this is by far the funniest movie I've seen in years.

Oh, Margaret Cho also wrote an autobiography of the same name -- stay away from it. It's a long, boring, poorly-written book that is occasionally funny only because it reminds you of her routines from this movie.

Summary: Decent material before she really finds her voice
Review: I saw Notorious C.H.O. before I saw this, and I have to say that her most recent work is a lot better than this, which was recorded in 2000. This one is fairly funny, but seems like a less passionate performance than her "Notorious" performance, which is brilliant in it's topics, her voices, and her FACES!!! Her faces are priceless. This is decent stuff, but if you want to see Margaret shine, get Notorious C.H.O. intstead, where she is much more confident and much funnier...

Summary: Recycled garbage that retained it's stench!
Review: I was a captive audience to this pathetic pile of flotsam and I might just as well have watched any of her earlier futile attempts at humour and gotten equally nothing out of them. Okay then Maggie, we get it, your mom has an accent and you like homosexuals and don't support our president and you're no longer proud to be an American; so who's keeping you here? Keep the politics and inane opinions out of your act and start trying to be funny again instead of just plain sad.
