Summary: No matter what anyone says, ARTHUR simply 'rocks'!
Review: Arthus is one of the best romantic comedies of modern times. You see, it resembles romantic comedies like Sleepless In Seattle and You've Got Mail from the modern times. Of course, in ARTHUR, the main character is wasted for 1/2 the film. Arthur will guarantee laughs for anyone who is in a bad mood. For example, when Arthur's fiancee to be says that a "real woman could stop him from drinking," Arthur (Dudly Moore) states "It would have to be a really big woman!" This is funny stuff here! Sir John Gielgud, in his Oscar-winning role as Arthur's side-kick in humor and mentor to Arthur has some of the most humurous and touching moments in the film. His portrayal is perfect and touching to watch. This movie is perfect for anyone looking for a few laughs while staying sober.

Review: This is one of the best movies made in that it allows you to forget the Politically Correct world that we live in. Each actor puts in their best work ever and the laughs are deep and on going. Put your mind in overdrive and your heart on your sleeve - you will enjoy this warm, funny movie about an absurd man's search for a life that is about more than about.

Summary: One of my all time favorite movies!
Review: I saw Arthur when it was first released, and have seen it a dozen or so times since then. It has to be one of my favorite all time movies. Dudley Moore was the ideal Arthur and played the drunken millionaire to perfection. Liza Minelli simply captivates both Arthur AND the audience the moment she is caught shop lifting and you root for her throughout the remainder of the movie. For pure, simple, comedy at its finest you can't beat this movie!

Summary: You wouldn't invite this drunk to dinner, would you?
Review: I understand that most people find this film very funny. Please realize that I am not a person who is easily offended. This movie does just that. Moore's drunken lout character is so unappealing and the potential for a disastrous outcome in his co-dependent behaviour with Minnelli is so realistic that I could not enjoy this story on any level. Unless of course I viewed it like "Lost Weekend II". Moore's ability in comedy has been riding on the tails of his time with Peter Cook for far to many years.The fact that he continually plays characters who must get drunk to motivate the plot seems lazy and pathetic. He has become a one trick pony. The sight of this unredeemed alcoholic getting behind the wheel of a car was enough to make me send off a donation to MADD. If you were in the same room as this character I sincerely doubt you would find him funny, amusing or cute. And you certainly would not want your daughter to be come invovled on any level with a jerk like Arthur. I did like Sir John Gielgud. The movie would've been better if it had just showed the butler taking care of his chores.

Summary: Get Caught Between the Moon and NYC!
Review: Arthur is filthy rich and always drunk - two traits which would make you envy and dislike someone.....right? But Dudley Moore's portrayal of a man who finds laughter in almost every situation is, somehow, endearing.

Arthur's father and grandmother, however, want him to grow up! They want him to stop stumbling (loud and drunk) into fancy restaurants with prostitutes in tow bringing shame and dishonor to the family name. They want him to settle down with Susan, a young lady from a wealthy family. But there's a problem. Arthur doesn't love Susan, but if he doesn't marry her, his grandmother won't leave him $750 million in her will. The other dilemma is that Arthur is falling in love with Linda (played by Liza Minelli), a wisecracking waitress/aspiring actress who he meets after seeing her shoplift a tie for her father's birthday.

What would this movie be without Liza Minelli? She made Linda a "New York kind of girl" - a wonderful portrayal. Linda's father, played by Barney Martin, also brings laughter to the screen. In one scene, he "overhears" Arthur offer Linda $100,000 to go after her dream of becoming an actress. Martin's response is subtle, but I guarantee you it will have you rolling on the floor with laughter. And who can forget Hobson, Arthur's proper British butler (played by John Gielgud) who constantly (but "lovingly") pelts Arthur with a barrage of street-wise insults.

And finally, when you add all of the outdoor New York City scenes and Christopher Cross singing "Arthur's Theme", you get a movie that will transcend your heart and soul into the lives of these people.

The lighthearted approach to drinking is a little disturbing, but this movie was made in the early 80's. However, I recommend this movie. You'll love it.

Summary: Wonderful Comedy, But...
Review: "Arthur" remains wonderfully entertaining after more than 20 years, although a DVD remaster would be appreciated ("Arthur" was one of Warner's earliest DVD releases).

Also, contrary to an earlier review Dudley Moore did not win an Oscar for his performance. He was nominated for Best Actor but lost to Henry Fonda for "On Golden Pond."

Review: This is a nice DVD, if you don't mind that 27.9 percent of the original theatrical image has been removed for the DVD exhibition, so that the DVD image fills your entire 4:3 television screen (theatrical aspect ratio - 1.85:1; DVD aspect ratio - 4:3). If you're okay with that, enjoy!

Review: Back in the 70's,British-born Dudley Moore was little known to the American public even when he supported Chevy Chase and Goldie Hawn in the 1978 Paramount film FOUL PLAY. The following year,he co-starred with Bo Derek in "10",which was his first starring American film. The disappointing WHOLLY MOSES followed in 1980. That same year,Moore did this film with Liza Minelli,daughter of the late Judy Garland. It was filmed in New York City and was theatrically released in July 1981. Moore won a Best Actor Oscar for his portrayal of Arthur Bach,a drunk millionaire who goes broke. Arthur is engaged to Susan Johnson(pre-L.A. Law Jill Eikenberry) but the engagement is broken and Arthur's money is taken away by Susan's father. In one of the first scenes,Arthur spends the night at his apartment with a hooker named Gloria. Then Arthur meets Linda,a diner waitress(Minelli) in a department store where she is shoplifting. Arthur and Linda hook up immediately. But the wedding between Arthur and Susan almost happened. Susan was dressed in her wedding gown and Arthur tells her at the very last minute that he's in love with Linda. Susan's father enters the chapel and beats the crap out of Arthur. The movie soundtrack album has been long out-of-print(it was never re-issued on CD). It features ARTHUR'S THEME(Best That You Can Do) performed by Christopher Cross. That song is available on some CD compilations and was one of 1981's top hits. For the next eleven years,Moore relentlessly made movies such as SIX WEEKS with Mary Tyler Moore,UNFAITHFULLY YOURS,BEST DEFENSE with Eddie Murphy,LIKE FATHER LIKE SON with Kirk Cameron,LOVESICK with Elizabeth McGovern,MICKI & MAUDE with Amy Irving and Ann Reinking,CRAZY PEOPLE with Daryl Hannah,BLAME IT ON THE BELLBOY and of course,ARTHUR 2:ON THE ROCKS with Minnelli. ARTHUR 2 was theatrically released in 1988 and wasn't as successful as the first film. Sadly,Dudley passed away in March 2002 of complications from diabetes. He was 66. I dedicate this film to his memory. Also in ARTHUR 2,Cynthia Sikes resumed the role of Susan Johnson since Eikenberry was immersed in L.A. LAW.
