Summary: GOD, this is such a good movie.
Review: When it was done, I was just taken aback, and I could just blankly stare at the screen and proclaim, "That was a really, really, really, really good movie." I don't recall the last time a movie actually affected me such. Usually, I can just nonchalantly say, "Yeah, that was a really good movie," but *Dogma* was just something amazing.The movie is hilarious. You will audibly laugh many times. It's a great, witty, intelligent satire of Catholicism, the Catholic church, and the Bible, and NO, those aren't all the same thing. It skillfully tackles issues of faith and belief systems. It's irreverent yet reverent. It's not only entertaining, but it even has that character development stuff critics always like. And the actors are perfect for their parts, and play them well. Plus, the font is cool. You will not walk away from this movie thinking the same way about things that you thought about them before. It earns my highly coveted Gold Star Seal of Approval. See it now. Or see it again. Just see it.

Summary: the buddy Christ!
Review: not his formal name, just something we've been kicking around the office. this movie is the most hilarious film i have seen in a long time. Kevin Smith is a genius! for a long time mallrats was my favorite but this movie took me by surprise. it's actually very smart and believable. who knows if all those names of angels and laws are factual but if they aren't he portrayed them in a very real way. jay and silent bob are by far my favorite characters in his movies (jay especially) but in this movie all the people were so funny and smart and leave it to alanis to wear silver chrisitan lacroix with dime store flip flop shoes. if you like kevin smith at all then you will love this movie. forget abt the religion aspect and just rent it and have a good laugh. i garantee you won't be disappointed.

Summary: WAIT TO BUY THIS DVD!
Review: I recently read an interview with Kevin Smith, and he revealed that in October they will release a collector's edition of the Dogma DVD, chock-full of videotaped commentary and over an hour of deleted scenes and such. This movie rules, but hardcore fans shouldn't buy it until the collector's edition is released.

Summary: Hollywood - promoting the Antichrist again?
Review: Content: Antichrist Language: foul Dialog: almost no value added Acting: average Humour: where? Role model value: -9 (on a scale -10 to 10) In few words, this is just another piece of Hollywood trash. Quoting myself: "I don't like to play the role of the critic or judge." But this movie is worthy of my expressing my impressions: 1. I grew tired of the profanities very fast - I lost track of the dialog 2. I did not like the gore/violence 3. I did not like anything 4. I fell asleep The movie is heading straight to the trash compactor.

Summary: Good movie. Not great, but definitely enjoyable
Review: Ironic that this movie is condemned by the Catholic League since everything in it is extremely Catholic. Almost every seminary student should watch this thing. Pretty much the story about bitter angels trying to get into Heaven follows the same theological conundrum posed by the Prophecy (ie, G-d's messengers really hate the human race) but it is extremely silly for the most part. Cute scenes in the movie include the blessed golf clubs, the whole "angels can't have sex" scenes, Alanis Morrisette as G-d, and the poop monster. Strengths include Chris Rock, Alan Rickman as well as Matt Damon and Ben Affleck as the angels. Jay & Silent Bob are funny but most of their jokes were in the comic books already (including going to the town where all the John Hughes movies took place to pick up Molly Ringwald and Ally Sheedy). George Carlin is hilarious but that's mostly because he's George Carlin. Irritating parts of the movie included the hockey playing demons, the demon character and Linda Fiorentino's character (Smith still can't write female characters very well, but at least he's trying unlike Mamet who just sticks a woman in the movie for no reason whatsoever.) And I was personally disturbed by the fact that Salma Hayak's character was a sexless angel. But that's just my personal problem and doesn't really detract from the movie. Hayak is either really irritating or really good in movies (pretty much mostly Rodriguez movies is where she shines.) and in this one she's pretty good. So rent it out or buy it. It's a fun movie. Just don't expect the greatest movie ever made. Kevin Smith may one day direct an amazingly beautiful and deep movie, but for now he directs enjoyable comedies which shouldn't be taken as anything more. Oh yeah, I kinda have to agree on the camera angle thing too. Nothing in this movie is all that visually interesting, but there were some nice shots and it is getting better.

Summary: One of Smith's Best
Review: With maybe the exception of "Clerks", "Dogma" is quite possibly Kevin Smith's best. Honestly I don't usually like anything starring Ben Affleck or Matt Damon, but they did o.k. in this one. Plus, this flick is not only hilarious, but proves my theory that Alanis Morrisette is God.

Summary: A few chuckles but mostly boring
Review: Considering the "star power" that this movie has in it, I thought perhaps this would be a GREAT movie. All I can say is, I found it to be EXACTLY the opposite. I found it to be most mundane and was rather disappointed. Am I catholic? No! Did I find this movie to be blasphemous? No! Simply put, it was a movie based on angels that were trying to get themselves back into heaven after being put aside. The only humor I found in it were some quips by Chris Rock.

Summary: Why can't anybody get an attack on religious doctrine right?
Review: While Kevin Smith does an adequite job in steeping the movie with religious dogma (and for the most part keeping it legitimate) he loses himself somewhere along the plot line and turns what would be a thought provoking look at church doctrine and turns the movie into something reminiscent of a Zucker brothers movie (complete with uninspired fart jokes.) Keep it mindless or keep it serious but the schitzophrenic nature of this film does not do justice to the brilliant ideas Smith introduces to us in the beginning of the film. I give this film one star because as a huge fan of Kevin Smith, I really hoped he could have done better.

Summary: A Hilarious kick in the gut
Review: Wow, this movie was by Kevin Smith, and I found it funny ANDeducational. the Muse, played wonderfully by Salma Hayek, said itright in regards to religion: Our hearts are in the right place, but our brains aren't. Too many religions bash one another... I think it's hilarious that the Catholics got so upset with this movie. I think they shoulda' took it more lightly. This movie was different from past movies by Kevin Smith, which, AS ALWAYS, will cost him fans who hate anything different. It's FUNNY, above all else. I'd recommend this to anyone who just wants a good, hard laugh.
