Summary: Unexpected Thought Provoking Film
Review: I honestly went into seeing this film with the idea that it would be just another Jennifer Anniston popularity boost disguised as an indie flick. I was wrong. This film addresses normally nearly taboo unspoken universal feelings many women have about feeling stuck in life situations they did not perceive at an earlier age. Anniston conveys her character's feelings of despair and ennui so well that I found myself reevaluating my opinion of her as an actress. I have not been so pleasantly surprised by a film, or an actress, in a long time. She held her own with John C. Reilly. The film brought to mind Ashley Judd's "Ruby In Paradise," another film I would recommend to anyone who appreciated the thought provoking themes brought out in this particular film about women feeling trapped in their station in life.

Summary: Excellent
Review: This truly is a great film and so much fun. It is quite introspective and moving. Though it deals with some serious and real issues, it is not a depressing film because it never fails to be hilarious. It is a heartfelt and very funny look at life. It will hit home with anyone who has ever felt "trapped" in their daily existence. Life at the "Retail Rodeo" is too funny for words. The filmmakers captured the spirit of a typical small town retail store so perfectly.

Jennifer Aniston reached new heights with her performance in 1998's "The Object of My Affection" and with this, her latest film "The Good Girl", she tops it. She's a natural and very talented actress. Her performance is very humorous and touching. The rest of cast is superb as well. Jake Gyllenhaal plays the troubled young man with depth and priceless comedy, and John C. Reilly as Aniston's husband gives a rich and endearing portrayal. This movie is filled with lines that you will be quoting and laughing over for a long time to come. I highly recommend it.

Summary: An Excellent Comedy
Review: Why is "The Good Girl" a good movie? Simple: the writing. The movie (thank God) never goes where you expect it too. The twists and turns are very funny. Be careful not to let Anniston's melancholy fool you into the thinking this is a drama. She does a nice job here, but unless youre a "Friends" fanatic, that's not the real story. "The Good Girl" is a creative comedy with good characters, such as John C. Reilly as Anniston's husband. He is cornering the market on the well-meaning but dopey as s**t husband this year ("Chicago" as well). His turn in "Good Girl" is richer than in "Chicago", however, because his character isn't so one dimensional. By the way, he got a Goden Globe nom. for "Chicago," so if you want to see that part expanded upon, see "Good Girl" for added depth. Jake Gyllenhall's (sp?) character is fun also. He's a self-suffering, flatulent writer with deep, deep feelings, ie; testosterone.
There are no easy answers for Anniston's character in this movie, and there are no easy answers in real life. The movie is unconventional and as a result, rewarding.
The end of the movie may have seemed sudden or unrewarding to others, but trust me. Just trust me. The ending of "The Good Girl" is as beautiful, uplifting, and heartbreaking as I have seen in a movie. Period.

Summary: Morally and Intellectually Intriguing
Review: The Good Girl is a difficult story in some ways, primarily because of its subtlety. Difficult for the viewer in that he/she will likely not know how to feel about its tone nor what to think, at its conclusion, about the morality and quality of life of its characters. For the filmmakers and actors, it must have been a greater trial. The deleted scenes portion of the DVD is revealing of the ultimate decision to deliberately leave out emotionally explosive and enlightening scenes, thus creating an ambiguous atmosphere throughout the film.

In The Good Girl, Justine Last (Jennifer Aniston) is lost, angry and ultimately dissatisfied with her life. Her husband is thoughtless pot smoker Phil Last (John C. Reilly.) Phil's best friend and partner in a house-painting business, Bubba (Tim Blake Nelson) sits eerily beside his friend and quietly longs for Justine.

At the Retail Rodeo, Justine passes the days shirking her duties and chatting with friend Gwen Jackson (Deborah Rush,) until she meets Holden Worther (Jake Gyllenhaal,) quiet, closed off and actively depressed checkout person who enjoys reading and rereading Catcher In The Rye. Justine's soul-deep ennui urges her to connect with Holden and they quietly slip into an affair.

The complications involve Gwen's food poisoning from bad blackberries, Bubba's continued fascination with Justine, and ultimately, the depth of Holden's mental illness -- sufficient to drag Justine headlong into lapses in judgment, compulsive lying and even a brief contemplation of murder.

Yet as viewers, we walk away half-smiling, wanting for Justine to rip herself free from the mire her life has become. What might have easily turned into a clichéd romantic comedy or revelatory mid-life crisis "feel good" film has instead, under the skilled control of writer/actor Mike White and director Miguel Arteta, become an unnervingly life-like picture of personal upheaval. Every performance is strong, from Aniston and Gyllenhaal's desperate immorality right down to the comically twisted mischief carried out by Cheryl (Zooey Deschanel.) Love it or hate it, The Good Girl will leave you thoughtful.

The DVD (Twentieth Century Fox Home Video) is mis-packaged. Describing the film as "a quirky comedy about first encounters and second chances," the blurb on the back of the DVD case is sorely misleading, likening the film's merits (or lack thereof) to what one might find in a Meg Ryan romantic comedy.

DVD features include the 94-minute feature film in full screen and anamorphic widescreen, 9 deleted scenes, alternate ending, gag reel, full-length writer/director commentary, and best of all, an illuminating scene-specific commentary by Jennifer Aniston.

Summary: Great Movie, Not so Great Disc.
Review: "The Good Girl" is one of those movies that comes around that is not for everybody, but for some people this movie will be a well written, well acted film that will find their way into their hearts time after time. The film is very much like most "Catcher in the Rye" type stories. But with a special touch that gives that something more. The film is contains the best performance Jennifer Aniston has ever given. Jake Gyllenhaal is also very good as the put-upon young man. The only detriments to this DVD version is that the video transfer is terrible. Where there should be black shadow you get blue noise, and it can really get annoying. The disc also does not contain the trailer for the film which I enjoyed. Overall the film is quite wonderful, but this disc could have been way better.

Summary: An Excellent Movie!
Review: I don't normally write reviews, but after I read the Amazon Customer Review of "The Good Girl" where the customer gave it only one star, listing 10 reasons not to see it, I had to step up to the plate.

First, in the defense of the "one star reviewer" if you normally ONLY like burp and fart plotless movies, then "The Good Girl" is not for you. BUT, if you enjoy comedy, suspense and thought-provoking entertainment, this is your movie. I actually rank "The Good Girl" as one of my top five favorite movies of the year.

Jennifer Aniston shows that she is more than a beautiful face and an actress who flawlessly portrays the quirky comedic style of her character "Rachel" on "Friends". In "The Good Girl" Aniston's acting is Oscar-worthy to say the least. She can pull off an authentic "Texan gal" southern accent as well as the body language of someone who feels the internal void of being trapped in an unfulfilling job and marriage.

Once you get passed being totally impressed by Aniston's performance (if you watch "Friends"), there is a unique and unpredictable story line that is packed full of humor and intrigue.

Aniston's character stumbles upon a new "love interest" with a male co-worker and given the fact that she married, her life begins to snowball out of control because of the affair.

Although this movie has been described as "dark and melancholy", (which I think is a bit harsh), it's fresh, it's different and I laughed out loud several times. It is a definite "must see"!

Summary: Melancholy if you are good...
Review: Justine Last (Jennifer Aniston) is trapped in a miserable rut as a result of an uninteresting marriage and unsatisfying job. One day at work Justine comes to a crossroad in her life where she decides to have an immoral affair with a young cynical writer with the pen name Holden (Jake Gyllenhaal) from Catcher in the Rye. During the affair she recognizes the daily melancholy that she is experiencing and she understands that she needs to get away from it, but moral issues prevent her from doing so. This is a dilemma that she struggles with in order to get out her self-destructive path. Good Girl is a film for those who do not mind introspective laughs and melancholy on the silver screen.
