If you love horseracing, this is a must for your collection. If you don't like horseracing, give it a shot anyway. It's well worth the rental fee, and I suspect you'll be heading back to Amazon.com shortly thereafter to purchase it.

Let It Ride is one of my favorite comedies of all time and truly is a hidden gem. Richard Dreyfuss is Jay Trotter, a cab driver in Miami who dreams of having that one day when everything seems to go his way. With a strong supporting cast, Dreyfuss demonstrates why he is one of the most versatile actors in the business. Let It Ride is a brilliant comedy that actually has a touch of drama (or a lot of drama if you love the Kentucky Derby!) It is a feel good movie that never gets old no matter how many times you watch it. Personally, I have lost count.

Forget Leonard Maltin and the "so called" experts who canned this movie when it was released. My only regret is that I didn't get a chance to see it on the big screen. Do yourself a favor and see this movie. While you are at it, do me a favor and beg someone to release this on DVD!

Summary: Am I having a good day or what?
Review: That is probably my favorite line from the film. Let It Ride is one of the smaller sports films that never really got the exposure it deserved. It has funny momments (Maltin must have been watching a different movie). Richard Dreyfuss is great as the "can't lose" cabbie who has a really good day at the track. Jennifer Tilly cracked me up as the ditzy brunette who doesn't know which way is up. Robbie Coltrane is also hilarious as he gets a change of attitude when Jay Trotter has his good day. The character of Trotter is very facsinating. It's someone we can relate to. He's always been a born loser, then something comes along to change his life. Along the way, he gains friends and admiration. He's an everyday everyman. It just goes to show that whether we have to wait one week or one year, there is a "good day" for all of us.

Review: Richard Dreyfuss has been a favorite of mine since I saw him in "The Goodbye Girl". His performance made me a fan for life, meaning that his mere presence in a movie is enough to make me want to see it. If you feel that way and haven't seen "Let It Ride", you don't know what you're missing. It is one of the funniest movies I've ever seen.
Dreyfuss is a riot and he is matched scene for scene by David Johansen, playing his degenerate gambler buddy. The two play a pair of life's losers who get the opportunity 'make it big' when Johansen overhears two guys riding in his cab discuss a fixed race. Dreyfuss decides to go to the track and act on the information and that's when the fun begins.
The supporting cast is excellent, with Robbie Coltrane a standout, as the ticket seller. This is comedy with a capital 'C'

Summary: A Great 'Little' Film
Review: Little, in the sense that it wasn't highly promoted upon its release and great in the sense that it is difficult to think of another film that was this well acted and cast. There's not a performance in this movie that doesn't ring true. We either know, or know of, these people. From the owners/trainers in the paddocks to the bettors in the stands, every one of these folks looked like they were right where they belonged.

Richard Dreyfuss, as Jay Trotter, plays a down on his luck taxi driver who just can't avoid the track. But today, he has a sure thing (along with a $50 bill in his shoe)... for one race on the card. How he works his way from the bar, to the rail, to the stalls, to The Jockey Club and then back to the rail is likely to be some of the most pleasing 87 minutes you're ever likely to spend looking at a television screen. And Dreyfuss is terrific. How can Teri Garr not love this guy? He drives her nuts, but she can't help but care for him. And so will you.

Rent it, buy it, look for it on a pay channel... but see it. Personally, I can't NOT watch this movie when it comes on TV. And I've seen it a dozen times. Chances are that you will, too.

Summary: When a Loser can't stop Winning
Review: I'd heard there were problems with the making of this comedy and it slipped in and out of theatres without much notice. I remember seeing the trailer and thinking that the movie looked terrible.
Then I saw it was based on a Jay Cronley novel.

If you've never read a Jay Cronley novel, find one: he has a hilarious writing style that can't be transferred to a movie screen. He wrote FUNNY FARM (made into the Chevy Chase movie) and QUICK CHANGE (with Bill Murray). The perfect John Candy role can be found in WALKING PAPERS but, sadly, John's gone. And then there's GOOD VIBES, which became LET IT RIDE.

This is a funny, funny movie. It takes the seedy setting of a horse track and fills it with hilarious characters all trying to make that winning bet. Richard Dreyfus gives an energetic performance as Jay Trotter, a loser who, for one day, just can't stop winning.

Give this underrated gem a shot. If you connect with it, then it's a winning bet.

Review: This is a keeper! It's my comfort film. It's the #! feel good movie. (God
Likes Me - He Reallly, Really Likes Me).

It falls into the Damon Runyon category, but California style. All of the characters are quirky and you want to know more - much more about them. You do get a brief sketch on everyone, which is difficult to do, but it works.

However, you get to know Trotter (Richard Dreyfuss). Up to now, his life has been hit or miss, but. he is at this moment having a very good day

There are so many memorable scenes that I can't choose my favorite - I think it might be when Cynthia Nixon's character gets her necklace caught in her braces - while very definately getting caught up in horse racing.

Buy this and sit back and enjoy the ride!

Review: This is the one that most people don't know about. So do a friend a favor and suggest it. It's funny, cleaver, has the greatest characters and is ok for the kids. It's not really a sports flick but if I had to put it somewhere sports is as good a place as any. It ranks in in my top five sports movies.
