Summary: brilliant
Review: It would be no exaggeration to say Gummo is one of the most original films ever made. Harmony Korine (of Kids fame) directs this beautiful and disturbing portrait of White trash kids in Xenia, Ohio. The film was actually not even shot in Ohio but its documentary feel you will either love or truly hate. This was long awaited on dvd as is Korine's follow up, Julien Donkey Boy.

Summary: Amazing! - To Say the Least!
Review: Love it or hate it - you have to admit this movie is trulyone-of-a-kind. Despised by critics and loathed by many other viewers,it is easy to see what could turn someone off. The animal cruelty, the choppy editing, the amateurish acting (??), the lack ofconventional plot, the extended and sometimes deadeningly long takes, and just the task of viewing 90 minutes of sub-par Jerry Springer-likerejects - all of this compiled makes watching "Gummo" anabsurdly surreal experience. However, all of the faults and banalityof much of the film is exactly what makes it all so amazing. I can'teven begin to describe the brilliance of the scene where Linda Manzfeeds her son spaghetti in a bathtub full of dirty water as sheshampoos his hair at the same time (and not to mention the candybar!). My eyes were glued to every tiny nuance - every sickeningdetail. What is the point of the film? I'll let others fight it outon that one. All I've got to say is if you hate formulaic Hollywood ..., check Gummo out - even if you hate it, you'll never forget it.And that's more than can be said for most films these days.

Summary: Very interesting and moving picture
Review: This is a movie that shows a side of America at its worst. Poor people with no guidance or motivation often times turn into the pathetic people shown in this movie. The thing that makes this movie interesting however, is that the characters dont really have you hating them. They have ambigous qualities that are very hard to read and it are these characteristics that make this movie so interesting. The kid in the tub in the end for instance...what can you say about him? He had been forced to live a life unimaginable to society, yet to him it is simply life. Sad, yet moving, this movie is interesting and if you're in the video store and dont want to watch a regular movie, this is a good choice. I thought the movie kids was garbage, (most kids that young in the cities simply dont act like that), but this movie was better and different in a way. The way the movie was filmed was what did it for me. Im not a huge film critic, nor do I know much about filmaking or independent films, but this movie had something extra that other movies dont have. There are certain scenes and images were really moving, something that makes a movie worthwhile to watch.

Summary: This is not a movie. It is art.
Review: Leonard Maltin hates this movie. I bet George W. Bush would hate this movie too. And a lot of other conservative people with no taste would hate it also. This is art, doofuses. 'Cast Away' is not art. It is a Fed Ex commercial with a Wilson tie-in. 'Traffic' is not art. It is a dilettante being given millions of dollars to do an unprovocative, ultra-conservative music video on the drug war because Hollywood is wondering where the Scorsese of today's generation is. So, if you like movies, go watch Bird On A Wire. If you like to get your head blown off by actual art, rent this movie. It's not "an edge-of-your-seat thrill-ride that never lets go!" (NoBrain McPaid, KCBS - Fresno). Amen to that.

Summary: There really isn't anything unusual about this
Review: If you really want to see what this film is about...open your eyes and look around. There isn't a single completely original situation in this film. There is, however, quite a bit of originality in the visual styling. There really isn't anything in this I didn't see or do as a kid growing up in the rural suburbs. The first time I saw it I laughed because, well, it was funny. The second time I watched I turned it off halfway through. It's a good one to show to people who have never seen it. Especially if you grew up with them as friends or siblings

Summary: Perverted Beauty
Review: We've all seen, read about or heard about the types of characters in "Gummo": rednecks, hillbillies, sadists, retards, prostitutes and perverts. What surprises me is they can all be found in the same town! At first, I despised all the characters: the guy who pimped his Mongoloid sister (or wife or daughter), kids who tortured and killed animals, people who lived in homes more filthy than pig sties, and all the redneck subhuman morons. But after awhile, I discovered many heart warming qualities about those I was watching: the tap dancing mom who loved her son and brought him dinner in the bath tub, the three sisters who had "lost" their cat, the junior cowboys who "murdered" the bunny, and even the "grandmother" murderers.

As disgusting as the characters of "Gummo" are, there's something lovable about then all. Sure, they're far from perfect, but human. Look closely, amid the filth and decay is beauty. A mother lies in bed with her retarded daughter who is saying her good night prayers. A young tennis player describes his fight with Attention Deficit Disorder.

The town portrayed in "Gummo" is certainly not a mirror of the places where I have lived, but there are similarities. Boasting, I might say "Boy, I'm glad I've never lived in a dump like that, or knew people so dumb and slow." The truth is that I do identify with "Gummo." Identification is a matter of degree. Like the evening news, "Gummo" exaggerates pain, perversion and inhumanity; but also gives us short glimpses of human beauty.

After the final tragedy stuck Gummoville, I was saddened to be without these misfits because each, despite his of her despicable qualities, had one simple but beautiful characteristic: their humanness.

Summary: A Great Family Film
Review: Yeah right, This is a sick movie, and I love it. I am aspiring to become a Film Director and I definitly will use this as a Inspiration in my movies. I really like this movie especially the soundtrack, which I recived for christmas. This ranks about # 3 on my list of movies right behind A Clockwork Orange and Hellraiser. If you like to be moved and want to acctually get interested in a movie. Get Gummo!

Summary: absolutley amazing
Review: The first time i watched the movie i was both amazed and disgusted. throughout the movie i couldnt decide wheather i wanted to roll on the floor laughing or drop a nucluar bomb on the small town in-which it was filmed. it contains some of the most amazing, and I-can't-believe-people-live-like-that insantity which makes Gummo so mind numbing. if you get a chance to watch this movie i recommend paying very close attention to the junk yard scene where the three boys are playing. when i first saw this movie i thought it was a documentary on how small town of hick/inbreeds lived and survived. i was fairly shocked to find out the people were acting. i recommend this movie all the way, and if you open your mind you will see there is alot of Gummo in your town. Enjoy.

Summary: If You're Contmeplating Suicide . . .
Review: Find out how lucky you really are! If you're contemplating suicide, you must see this movie -- you'll instantly feel better about yourself! The guys in thos movie are so pathetic that it would make a death-row inmate feel lucky by comparison! And I am NOT kidding. Like a previous reviewer said, the most frightening part of this movie is not being able to tell who is acting and who isn't. Personally, I think this is more a documentary than a fiction film -- no actors could be able to accurately simulate the moronic people here. (And sadly, I actually know some people like this.) There is a wonderful scene where an idiot actually wrestles a chair with all his vim, others about killing cats (and selling the meat to Chinese restaurants). It is so lame and sigusting that it actually has the power to hypnotise (thus the three stars instead of one). And this is coming from an ex-mortician. I once thought that nothing could shock me or turn my stomach. Thanks to this movie, I now know better! A thousand times worse than Plan 9, this is the absolute worst film I have ever seen, which must make it a classic in a perverse sense. A must see if you're into mindless perversity. It's so bad that it's great!

Summary: What the hell
Review: I am only thirteen years old. I saw this movie cuz I didn't know what it was about and I was interested. I usually can take sick movies that are not meant for commercial viewing but as an artistic form. But this movie is sick either way. It is plotless and makes no F**king sense whatsoever. It's an ongoing plague of weird things that still disturbs me today. All my friends are stupider and retarded for watching this movie. That is how powerful this stuff is.
