Summary: Good movie, in spite of itself
Review: This movie has its problems. Tom Cruise is simply not credible in an adult role. Renee Zellweger apparently learned acting technique by watching daytime television. Cuba Gooding Jr is out of control and well over the top (if you buy the Special Edition, you can read the script and see how much he expanded his role). The spear carriers are cliche -- one actually introduces herself with "I'm her disapproving sister." The script itself is weak. Repeatedly, the characters are made to respond to situations that haven't been created on film, however real they may be to writer/director Cameron Crowe.

All of that aside, however, I really like "Jerry Maguire". It may not be great art but it has a great heart! The message is one of optimism, that you don't have to be a jerk but if you place your trust in another person, it will be returned. We see character after character making that leap of faith, and being rewarded for it. The whole is greater than the sum of its parts.

I must mention the splendid performances of Jay Mohr, as a rival sports agent, and Regina King, as a client's wife. They're the stars of a pretty dim cast.

Summary: Jerry McGuire DVD - SHOW ME MORE DVD FEATURES!!!
Review: This is an amazing movie, which demonstrates how well Tom Cruise, Cuba Gooding Jr.(Oscar for BSA), and Renee Zellweger can act when they're given a script that calls for them to expose themselves emotionally.

Given how excellent this movie is, it is a wonder why the DVD edition is so featureless. Not only does it lack the trailers, documentaries, and actor notes that the cheapest of DVD's can muster, but you'd think that a movie of this depth would have a director's commentary. Maybe the DVD we'd like to see will come out in 10 years as the "Special Commemorative Edition". What really floored me was that this Region I DVD even lacked english subtitles -- sometimes it's cool to watch the movie Quebec style, with french sound, and english subtitles... -- even *that* bare-bones feature was lacking on the DVD!!!

This oversight on the DVD shows real brainlessness at the studio releasing this DVD ... figure the core fans of Jerry McGuire already have the VHS version. Why would they jump to buy the DVD, when the darn thing has absolutely no extra features!!!!!!

Having vented about the sparse DVD release, let me get back to the movie... it was beautifully transferred to DVD, and is a total joy to watch in the widescreen aspect ratio.

Summary: A Classic?! Not Quite...
Review: Although it starts promising enough, this movie soon turns into another predictable and unsurprising romantic comedy. The story is pure Hollywood fluff and the typical and expected ending confirms it. Ok, the acting is quite good, everyone was believable and gave solid performances, yet the plot is full of cliches and sometimes it`s way too annoying in its tender and sappy moments. Cameron Crowe did a decent job directing this, but overall "Jerry Maguire" is a romantic comedy by-the-numbers, even if a couple of characters are a bit above cardboard charicatures. It`s a watchable movie, yet it brings nothing new and is far from innovative stuff.
A rental at best.

Summary: AFI's Great Love Stories: #100 Jerry Maguire
Review: The American Film Institute's 100 Years...100 Passions list of America's greatest love stories must be pretty good when it starts with Cameron Crowe's 1996 film, "Jerry Maquire." Hopefully you saw this movie fore the first time before the Oscars they actually showed the "you had me at hello" scene from the film's climax. Not since "Chinatown" did the Oscars ruin a film by screening a spoiler clip like this one (the one where Jack gets Faye to spill the beans about her "daughter").

Jerry Maquire (Tom Cruise) is a sports agent who has a moral ephihany and ends up getting fired. Down to one client, Rod Tidwell (Cuba Gooding, Jr.), an angry wide receiver for the Arizona Cardinals, Jerry also snared single-mother Dorothy Boyd (Renee Zellwegger) with his vision. Gooding got the Oscar but the performance of the film really belongs to Cruise. Bonnie Hunt as Dorothy's older and wiser sister is, as always, a joy, and it is her look at Jerry during his climatic speech that assures the audience his character has indeed earned redemption. If you look at the body of work he has produced to date, then Cameron Crowe may already be the acknowledged master of the modern romantic drama. So explain to me how "Say Anything," with one of the great romantic shots of all time, is not on AFI's list? See? #100 and already I am complaining.

Most romantic line(s): TIE (a) "I love you. You... complete me." and (b) "Shut up. Just shut up. You had me at 'hello'."

Two Tear-Jerking Scenes: (1) Jerry and Rod hug after the game; (2) Jerry goes back for Dorothy.

If you like "Jerry Maguire," then check out these other films on AFI's list: #76 "The Quiet Man." Why? Because they both have true love coming out after the marriage ceremony.

Summary: "You complete me!"
Review: I saw Jerry maguire for the first time in 1997 and I was amazed. I had believed that this was again another typical sports movie with prettyboy Cruise in it, but I was wrong. Cameron Crowe has done really a wonderful piece of modern cinema. The characters are so real, and u can almost smell and touch the films atmosphere when watching it. Tom Cruise is acting with such a wild passion, that you just have to love him for that. He is acting a sport agent full of heart and soul. And Renee Zellweger, could there be any other so sweet, so tender and beautiful person like you in the world? Her role as Dorothy Boyd made me forget that she is even acting, and the part was truly made just for her.(The date scene makes me cry everytime, so pure happiness and feelings) Cuba Gooding jr. earned his first oscar. His character changes the life of Jerry Maguire in the film and does it with such of enthustiasm that you can just admire Rod Tidwells life, where every piece is in the right order. The little boy (Jonathan Lipnicki) is also awesome. All the actors/actresses are doing a good job. The biggest credit goes to the script by Crowe. It is very original and fresh indeed. Crowe has decided to concentrate mostly on characters and that is why I like this movie so much. This is the fist sports movie I have ever loved. Jerry Maguire is about people, who are just like we all. It is about the truth, love, respect and relationships...okay and about sports. Jerry Maguire works really well. The beautiful cinematography, editing and music makes the strong story and characters to look good. Yes I agree that it's very emotional, touchy and sweet, but why should we deny that we need that sometimes. I can honestly say that this world seems to be so much better place to live in after seeing Jerry Maguire. The mix of tiers and smile on your face tells the rest. After I have seen Jerry about 10 times, i can agree that it might be little too long but what the hell, it is still worth every minute of it!

Summary: "You had me at Hello"
Review: This is probably one of the best romantic comedies that the 90s dished out. It has everything for anyone. Cameron Crowe knows how to draw an audience. He gives the guys a little football and the women, sappy hearfelt love scenes. It is an enjoyable movie all around. The acting is great, especially Renee Zellweger and Cuba Gooding Jr. The script is also very well written as well. I highly reccomend this film for both sports fans and romance lovers.

Summary: The Feel Good Film of the Decade
Review: Jerry Maguire is the feel-good film of the decade. The unforgettable characters and script will leave you with a smile on your face at the end of the film most definately! It's about a sports agent (played brilliantly by Tom Cruise) who realizes he hates his place in the world during one lonely night. He writes up a huge memo (mission statement) on how we should and should not act in the agent business, which triggers multiple cheers from his peers. This however gets him fired, and him, his fish, and one of his co-workers (the cute Renee Zellwegger) leave with him to start their own company. The film is one of the best of the past decade, and that kid is just too great.

This DVD is bareboned, no extra features at all, but the transfer is one of the best ones I've seen on a DVD. December is the date where "Jerry Maguire" Special Edition comes out though, so I would wait for that one which will contain many extras. Great film, but if you wanna purchase it, wait 'till December when the SE is available.

Summary: Show Me The Extras ! ! !
Review: This film is definitely what I would call a feel good movie. I came away from it feeling that there are decent people in this world and that we are not all disappearing into the obscurity of just a name on a piece of paper.

The story follows Jerry Maguire, played by Tom Cruise, falling from grace working for a sports star agency when he has a flash of inspiration and takes the moral high ground on the way people should be treat within the company. His eventual rise to becoming a better person is aided from the love of woman and her son and the realization that everyone who he represents should be treated with the same respect.

The person that stole the show for me was Cuba Gooding Jr. Every scene he was in made me laugh. This was the first movie I had seen him in and thought he was a terrific actor, deserved of the Oscar he won for Best Supporting Actor. The "Show Me The Money" scene will have you in stitches.

This is not a DVD that is to be bought for it's technical qualities or abundance of extras. All you get is a static menu with no trailer, character biographies or other extras. In this day and age of DVD's like "Contact" and "The Matrix" I would have expected a bit more from a quality movie like this. The picture quality is good, as is the sound but it certainly won't tax your Dolby Digital amplifier, but then again it is not expected to.

Jerry Maguire is a film to cuddle up to your partner with and watch on a cold rainy night. It is funny, poignant and thought provoking. Worth watching at least once.

Steve.

Summary: A Feel Great Movie,
Review: This picture was the best and really the last time that Cruise was at the top of his game as an actor. The material was great. Story of the fall and slow rise of a man who makes new friends, finds new love, and helps a sports athelete find both personal and professional success on the playing field. The casting was solid and it was a break out role for several actors who have gone on to do even bigger films.

Summary: Amazing
Review: Some thoughts I had while reading the reviews...

1. Complaints about the lack of Chemistry between Cruise and Zelwegger.

THINK: As Maguire simply put it..."great at friendships, terrible at intimacy"

There wasn't supposed to be any chemistry, that's the whole point...one of the main themes was that love can grow on you.

Throughout the movie, Maguires relationship with his wife was juxstaposed with the Tidwells.

I think that it is that which built us to the climax of the movie...when Maguire finally realizes that he loves her.

2. Complaints about how this movie is "flat".

I will not even touch this...

well, now I'm lazy...
