Summary: Strange Movie ehh?
Review: First of all let me point out this film is obviously canadian! It's stupid but at the same time it is a work of genius. The beggining is hilarious, (and by the way the moth thing works). Then the film just gets bizzar but in a good way. Remember this is not a film yu should view seriously. This is an off the wall comedy that you should see with a few beers.

Summary: "Give into the dark side of the Force, you nob!"
Review: Yes, this movie has pretty marginal production values, and yes, it will not appeal to anyone looking for highbrow entertainment, but if you have a place in your heart for goofy dumb people triumphing over evil then it's the movie for YOU. It has limited appeal outside the core fans of SCTV but would be considered reasonably funny by most people.

Summary: A movie to see with an Molson on your armchair
Review: Bob (Rick Moranis) and Doug (Dave Thomas) McKenzie are the ultimate in Canadiana, eh ? As their plan of getting free beer by stuffing a mouse in a beer bottle and complaining in high places fails, they get jobs at Elsinor brewery, a sinister place with sinister plans, which are brewed by the brewmeister who is no less than Max Von Sydow !!! Beauty ! He wants to take over THE WORLD ! But Bob and Doug can save the day, eh ?

A movie to see with an Molson on your armchair, eh ?

Review: This is one of my favorite comedies but the audio could have been a lot better. I see a lot of dvd's that should be Dolby
Digital 5.1 that aren't, and this is one of them.

Summary: Extras would have been nice
Review: Great movie! Good DVD.
The movie is great, I just wish they would have included something else. Maybe an audio commentary with Dave Thomas and Rick Moranis? How about something? Trailers are so standard, they shouldn't even be considered extra.

Still...buy this DVD...Hoser!

Summary: No DVD extras? That isn't heaven, that sucks!
Review: Bob and Doug McKenzie, formerly of the SCTV show, are the "heroes" of this film. They raise a baby mouse in a beer bottle in a scam to try to get free beer. Instead, the brewery gives them jobs, and strange things start to happen because the Evil Brewmeister has a plan to take over the world. How will the McKenzies are save the day? Get this film and find out!

Of course, the plot is not important, except that it must include beer, touques, and hockey. The McKenzie brothers are the core of the film, and the key is that the plot is set up, and the brothers simply inhabit the story. Moranis and Thomas are absolutely convincing as brothers (even if they don't look alike), probably because they spent so much time together on SCTV. von Sydow, as the villian, is also very good - no one does evil German villian better!

It's not a perfect movie - the portrayal of the patients at the mental hospital is cringe-inducing - but it's far better than most film comedies derived from 1-joke skits from a variety program (SNL cast members, are you listening?). For my money, the Blues Brothers is the pinnacle of achievement, but Strange Brew is a worthy second (yes, better than Wayne's World).

Unfortunately, there are no extras on this DVD. It's great to be able to see this in widescreen, but one SCTV skit and an animated promo do not cut it as extras. There's no commentary! Bring on Bob and Doug to promote their movie! That's what the fans want!

Summary: Take Off, Eh?
Review: I was first introduced to STRANGE BREW and the hilarious McKenzie brothers when I was about twelve at a Boy Scout lock in. Back then, the film seemed totally hilarious and surprisingly I learned a great deal about Canada from watching the film (it's cool when you meet someone from Canada years later and they talk about toques and you know what they're saying).

Fast forward several years and I find myself watching STRANGE BREW out of a bit of nostalgia. The film doesn't seem totally hilarious anymore, but it is funny. Having set through several classes on Shakespeare the references to HAMLET are obvious with Bob and Doug McKenzie as a bumbling duo version of Horatio (or perhaps a misplaced version of Dogberry and Verges from MUCH ADO ABOUT NOTHING). I found this made the film more interesting and a bit more intelligent than I remembered it before; after all if you're going to rip something off, you might as well rip off from the best.

Rick Moranis and Dave Thomas were the first to successfully take their comedy sketch and turn it into a decent big screen movie. So, if you like movies like WAYNE'S WORLD and NIGHT AT THE ROXBURY, then you will probably like STRANGE BREW. If not, who knows. To beer or not to beer, that is the question.

Summary: Great 80's movie, Second City Fans!!
Review: If your a fan of SCTV and Saturday Night Live type humor, you'll like this. The jokes are kind of corny. If you love slapstick, beer jokes, and are just looking for a fun movie. Try it.

Summary: Beer, more beer, and no hang over...
Review: The two brothers Doug (Dave Thomas) and Bob (Rick Moranis) escape the very first public screening of their own film by going home to their parents and having a beer. However, they have lost the beer money that their dad gave them and now they have to find away to get free beer. After some twists and turns they end up at Elsinore's Brewery where they get jobs and in turn as much beer as they need. However, there is a conspiracy brewing within the walls of the brewery that is led by Brewmeister Smith (Max von Sydow). The parody that Strange Brew provides is at times hysterical, but the overall film experience is poor and jerky.

Summary: An emerging cult classic, eh
Review: Canadians always seem funnier than us uptight Americans because they can laugh at themselves and their idiosyncracies without offending any interest group other than uptight Canadians. They have Mike Meyers and the timeless Kids in the Hall for comedy; we have Carrot Top and "Family Guy." That being said, this film is utterly sophomoric. Almost twenty years later, it still keeps me laughing out loud at its absurd plot, silly jokes and barrage of references and inside jokes about Canadian culture. I went into this film already knowing a bit of Canada (I am a big hockey fan) and came out of this thinking that most NHL players like beer, back bacon & donuts as much as Bob & Doug McKenzie. And I loved every minute of it.
Hats off to the disc's producers for making the audio and video quality superior to the faded-out versions I've seen on cable TV and VHS. They also did an admirable job of including lots of extras on the disc. I've never seen SCTV, but a classic McKenzie Bros. sketch from the legendary show is included on this disc, as well as the film's trailer and a new animated short that includes Canada's favorite siblings since the Dionne quintuplets.
Perhaps this film rivals Caddyshack in having the greatest number of one-liners repeated over beers by white thirtysomethings. That alone should make it a cult classic of Canada you knobs!
