Summary: Woody and New York, in Quintessence
Review: The film's memorable visual overture, set to "Rhapsody in Blue," exquisitely captures the beauty of Manhattan: gritty and poetic and pulsating. This is a movie rich in textures, thanks to Gordon Willis's lush black-and-white cinematography and Woody Allen's fine script, which casts a somewhat forgiving eye on its tangled web of relationships. Ultimately, and as only Woody can, the film's bittersweet ending, while not upbeat, manages to be uplifting. Memorable performances from Allen, Mariel Hemingway (her finest performance--bar none), Dianne Keaton, and Michael Murphy. Meryl Streep makes her film debut in a small part. The VHS version was widescreen when widescreen wasn't cool. I only wish that there were some additions for the DVD version, but it's hard to imagine Woody talking about one of his films in such detail. The details are on-screen, I guess, and that's good enough for me.

Summary: Wonderful, Jazzy and Bittersweet!
Review: This is a wonderful follow-up to Allen's other masterpiece 'Annie Hall'. As with all Allen films this one has lots of memorable dialogue with a healthy dose of neurosis. Insightful, fun, romantic, hilarious and wonderful to watch. What make this one special are the unforgettable Gershwin Score and the beautiful black and white cinematography. And of course it wouldn't be a Woody Allen movie if he didn't refer to his love for New York City, Groucho Marx and Ingmar Bergman at least once. Beautifully done and a lot of fun. From a scale of 1-10 I give this film a 9!

Summary: Magical, dreamy, spectacular, perfect
Review: No matter how many times I watch this piece of heavan, I still get teary at the line "you gotta have a little faith in people..." This is a movie with so much beauty and depth, humor and poignant romanticism. I can even accept Issac's (Woody Allen) older man/young girl romance ( and usually I am annoyed by the prevalance of this type of pairing in so many movies ) because to me ,the endearing Tracy, (Mariel Hemingway so SO wonderful here) represents the tender spirit of love, the open heart that simply feels what it feels. She is the point on which the movie pivots, with her sweet goodness and simple message of emotional purity in contrast to the over analysis the other older characters give love. There are so many levels on which to appreciate this movie. I could try to analyze it in words (as Woody and his complex, terrific cast of characters analyze their lives and loves...) but instead, I have to just tell you all with FEELING: Visit this film, the magical, dreamy, spectacular, perfect place...Manhattan.

Summary: Manhattan
Review: This is one of my favourate movies, it has everything, romance, comedy and it teaches us about life and how you can't always trust your friends, especially when it comes to relationships. The ending is interesting, when Issac davis (Woody Allen) is reading a list of what he thinks life is worth living for, he forgets to mention his son. Also if art does imitate life , then I think the fact that Woody has a 17 year old girl friend says a lot.

Summary: One of the Twentieth Century's Most Wonderful Films
Review: As we bid adieu to the millennium mankind first ventured to capture art in moving images, I am impressed by how little "art" WAS actually captured. Woody Allen's 1979 film "Manhattan" is an artful achievement that will be admired hundreds of years from now. It is Mr. Allen's best and one of the top ten comedies of all time. Put this one in a time capsule and many generations down the road they will know that "even back then" there was intelligent (but quite neurotic) life in Manhattan.

Summary: Rhapsody in Black & White
Review: You don't have to have been born and raised in Manhattan to fall in love again with each viewing of this contemporary masterpiece, but I was and I do. Forget the Purple Rose of Cairo, I want to leap through the screen and insinuate myself unnoticed into the world of Isaac Davis et. al., and stay forever. Whether Woody is exploring universal truths, questioning our morality, bemoaning our mortality, or hitting you with an Allenism like an uppercut from the floor, he's got you for all 96 minutes. This film seduces you like the title town. Once you've been there, you'll never forget it; and somehow you know you'll be back again.

Summary: A Masterpiece
Review: The best Woody Allen movie ever made and one of the best movies of all time.No one can combine comedy and drama better then the woodman. The famous "lunar surface" line is one of the best one liner's in cinema!

Summary: A beautiful feast of a film
Review: Sometimes when I think of this movie, the plot is the farthest thing from my mind. The music and photography of 'Manhattan' are are absolutely delectible. There should be an exhibit in a museum with framed shots from this film, while Gershwin plays in the background. To simply look at this movie and to hear its soundtrack is an experience to be yearned for. Add to that a wonderful screenplay and magnificent acting, and you have got one of the most pleasureable cinematic experiences possible. The Annie Hall vs. Manhattan debate is a difficult one to settle, if for no other reason than that the two movies succeed on very different levels (I personally prefer Crimes and Misdemeanors to both). That having been said, one should think really hard before deciding that Annie Hall is better just because it is more famous. The academy's failure to nominate Woody for best director for Manhattan is reason enough to doubt to Oscars the way Woody does.

Summary: rhapsodic, heart-wrenching---gershwin swings over manhattan
Review: did anyone notice how great the music is in the movie? gershwin's "rhapsody in blue" fits seamlessly (and breathtakingly) with the glorious black-and-wide shot of manhattan skyline; and when "love is here to stay" comes up, i just wanna hold my dearest girl and dance. as a big jazz fan, i can always find my favorite scores in woody allen movies.
