Rating: Summary: The only stars go to Colin Firth (spoilers) Review: I was *extremely* disappointed in this film. Abysmal was the word that came to mind when we got out. There were just too many holes. Where'd she get the money to trip off to London? When she got there and met her dad, it was completely inconceivable that she didn't insist on spending time with him after years of not knowing each other. Wouldn't any girl be intimidated by those surroundings rather than abusing them? What kind of brat walks out on the Queen of England when the Queen has deigned to attend a party in her honor? I had a ton of other similar questions that, unanswered, left the movie flat and unbelieveable. The dialogue had me groaning almost from the beginning, it was, in turns, lame, predictable, or just painful. I've liked a lot of teen romance flicks for what they are - She's All That, 10 Things I Hate About You, and Clueless, for example - but this one just wasn't smart like those were.If you're a Colin Firth fan, he was wonderful, as always. The funniest and sweetest moments in the movie were all his.
Rating: Summary: One of my favorite movies! Review: I saw the preview for this movie when I went to see Harry Potter II, and decided that I HAD to see it, and I did the day after it came out on the big screen. It is one of the best movies I have ever seen! The movie is about a girl, Daphne, who goes to England to find her father, but instead finds that her father is high prophile politition Lord Henry Dashwood. Daphne tries to fit into the proper English style with the help of her newly found friend Ian. But her very American style, and her bothersome and mean future step-mother and step-sister, she doesn't really succeed. Throughout the story, Daphne tries to fit in and also gain her father's love and trust, while uncovering some secrets about him, too. As I said before, this is one of my favorite movies, and I reccomend it to everyone to see, if you like these types of movies!!! ENJOY!

Rating: Summary: Fun family film - 5 stars for Colin Firth! Review: First of all, I have to say that the two friends that made this a girls night out and went to see this with me all had the same surprise. None of us expected to spend so much time laughing out loud. Two of us were serious Colin Firth fans and that was enough because he was wonderful beyond belief, but you have to give Amanda Bynes the credit she deserves. Although her scenes with the more experienced actors made her acting seem less impressive, you have to hand it to the girl for having natural ability when it comes to physical comedy. Few girls as cute as Ms. Bynes can go the lengths she goes for comedy and pulls it off. In ten years, she's only 15, we'll have another Sandra Bullock I'm sure. The girl was born with the comedic chops to have a great career. Because of this and the fact that the film never takes itself too seriously, her less than perfect acting skills are easily forgivable. The only time this is painfully obvious are during her scenes with the superb Colin Firth. One of my friends commented that he was almost too high of a caliber actor for the role. However, he is supposed to be a convincing candidate for England's prime minister. One could argue that the vast difference felt between Ms. Bynes and Mr. Firth strengthens the premise of the film. After all, the movie is about a young American teen trying to fit in in jolly old England, and you get the sense that the struggle is real. Some of the most attractive things to young viewers will most likely be Ms. Bynes vast array of clothes, and her young english suitor who is as cute as pie and has a dreamy singing voice. There's a fantastic montage of Ms. Bynes trying on funky, Hepburnish style clothes that most teens will love. The girl can really look good in anything. There has already been plenty written about Colin Firth's leather pants scene and most might think this is about his appeal, but the bottom line is it's drop dead funny. Those that have never seen him in anything but his more serious roles will be stunned that he has this in him. The scene is really brilliant. Aside from a sometimes over the top script, this film is as enjoyable as the Princess Diaries. Princess Diaries is quite a bit stronger in its' script and Anne Hathaway's performance, but fans should appreciate both equally. Adults should also find the film entertaining as adult emotions are explored as much, if not more than our starring teen's. Firth's reaction to finding out about his daughter and the torment of never knowing why his wife left him is painful to watch. It is rare that another performer has shown an audience more without opening his mouth than Colin Firth. This is a cute film no parent should worry about their teens watching and in fact, may enjoy watching with them. It's one of the few films that concentrates so much on a father/daughter relationship without crossing the line into complete sentimentalishm (Father of the Bride territory).
Rating: Summary: Light, Fun, Will Touch Your Heart and make You Laugh Review: What with the war, and the ubiquitous sounds and sights of embedded reporters standing behind tanks or jeeps, or green tinted blurry images with flashes of bright light, we wanted to see something light, that would make us laugh. This film fit the bill. A totally different story compared to our last flick, The Quiet American, we had a great time, with a lot of laughs and heart warming moments. It's a classic Cinderella-type story of a girl who's never had contact with her father, a fabulously wealthy Earl, in England. Every time she works as a waitress at a wedding, she cries when the father does the dance with the father. At seventeen she runs off to meet her father. She sneaks onto his estate, meets him, and his snooty fiance. The story moves on to portray her being a silly, playful, open American teen let loose in a stiff, upper class world of royalty, while her father is running for a position in the house of commons. There are no big surprises here, no deep human insights, observations or explorations. It's just a simple, happy story with plenty of sweet moments that touch the heart. Amanda Bynes, a regular on Nickleodeon for 11 years, since she was five, did a great job playing an older woman of seventeen. The casting was superb, with the nasty stepmother and stepsister to-be doing a great job of getting you to hate them. The music is excellent, particularly the singing of Oliver James, who plays Ian, the rocker boyfriend. This is not a movie you go to if you are seeking mental stimulation, but for light, happy entertainment that repeatedly lifts and touches your heart and makes you laugh and smile, it's a winner....
