Summary: Ack, ack, ack,
Review: Mars Attacks is a campy and colorful cinematic attack on mindless notions of heroism. The art direction is a pop art lover's wetdream. The scenes of the aliens hanging out in their jockey shorts is silly fun. Lisa Marie is unbelievable as the floating, bubble gum chewing, femme fatale robot. Glen Close is great as the chicken hearted first lady who wants to save the china from the Martians. Will the earth be saved from the Martians? You have got to see the ending to believe it.

Summary: It has all the production values of a comic book movie.
Review: Everything from Jack's over acting to the fake looking sets makes this a new low in Hollywood film making.

Summary: Pam Grier is all you need
Review: To see Pam in that belly dancing outfit is the only reason you need to see Mars Attacks. Good flick.

Summary: Mars Attacks!
Review: Tim Burton's halarious cheesy 50's B-moie Sci Fi satire is one of his most abstract and weirdest films since Beetlejuice. Playing like a who's who of Hollywood, the top-notch cast all do the weird thing with their roles, and the invasion of earth by the "Ack! Ack!" aliens is suitably spectacular. It does have it's moments of slow pacing and some seriously un-funny moments, but it makes up for it simply because of it's frenetic action and wacky humour. Jack Nicholson is the standout guy here, playing the "all American" President, and Pierce Brosnan shows that he can do something else than Bond, although it sometimes seems like he's wishing he wasn't here. Danny Elfman's terrific score is a clever homage to the old "woOoOo" music of the old alien invasion films. While it's far from perfect, there are enough genuinley funny moments to make it worth your while. No extras on the DVD.

Summary: Plan 10 from Outer Space
Review: I'm a fan of all of Tim Burton's films, but this is my favorite. "Mars Attacks!" scores big as a satirical send-up of 1950's sci-fi films. The film, based on a classic series of collectable cards, is rich with incredibly colorful sets, costumes, and computer animation that combines the very best of otherworldliness atmosphere of classic sci-fi with the Jetsons. Of particular note is the Vegas settings, which include the actual demolition of the classic Sands Hotel in which the Rat Pack held the Summit.

Beyond the stunning visuals, the film is blessed with a near flawless score by Danny Elfman. Few sci-fi scores, perhaps only that of Bladerunner and Forbidden Planet, better fit the material. I heartily recommend this film to you.

Summary: Mars Attacks and is dumb and stupid
Review: This is a dumb unfunny movie. It involves a martian invasion of Earth. I don't know who this is targeted at. It is not a serious action movie. It is a comedy if you are a sicko and find people getting killed funny. If you want to see a good alien invasion movie see Independence day. This only deserves one star because Natalie Portman is in it and see is so hot.

Summary: Mars Attacks...the Funny Bone; Almost!
Review: MARS ATTACKS baffled audiences and critics alike not realising it was a spoof on classic science fiction movies of the 1950's and even of the recent INDEPENDENCE DAY released a few months earlier. Also, it was probably a backlash to movies like E.T. and STARMAN in which these movies have humans trying to establish friendships with the aliens. Lastly, the film's director is Tim Burton, and that should have been a major clue to what kind a film this was going to be. The martians are based on the TOPPS trading cards of the past and are given the CGI treatment. Their screen personality is what makes the movie either funny or unwatchable depending on one's point of view. In either case, these martians just want to kill, kill and kill again. Basically, that is the main theme of the film. Also, if a person is not killed, they are kidnapped and used for outrageous experiments (i.e. the Sarah Jessica Parker character who's head is tranplanted on her pet dog's body and the dog's head on her body...it is a very bizarre piece of special effects!). In any case named actors are there only to be oft by the martians throughout the movie and the martians are fun to watch in their mannerisms and speech habits of honks of various tones and how they just laugh when they are killing and destroying everything is sight. However, it starts to wear on the filmgoer wondering how and when its going to end. When the humans do finally find a way, its too late to laugh. An impressive cast from Jack Nicholson, Glenn Close, Annette Bening, Pierce Brosnan,Micheal J. Fox,Danny Devito, Jack Black,Martin Short,Rod Stieger, Jim Brown,Pam Grier, and...Tom Jones? The film calls for repeat viewings to get the joke, and the viewer must be reminded that one is entering another one of Tim Burton's dark worlds.

Summary: "Ack ack aCk ACK ACK!"
Review: "I want the people to know that they still have two of three branches of the government working for them"

Check your mind at the door on this one folks. It's a fun B-Grade Sci-Fi movie reminiscent of the B-Grade Sci-Fi from the '50's and '60's but the plot is thinner than rice paper. What do you expect from a movie that is based on the subject matter from a series of Topps trading cards made in the late '50's early '60's with a brief comeback and reprints in the late '80's. What? You want a review? OK, then why didn't you say so.

The basic plot, which is almost all of the plot, is the Martians attempt to conquer Earth, but ultimately fail of course. Jack Nicholson has dual roles as a Vegas Hotel/Casino Owner and the President of the United States in an attempt to make the movie more than just an old worn out B-Movie. That brings up a thought... If movie studios had the multi-million dollar budgets in the 1950's & '60's that they now have today, there wouldn't have been as many B-Grade Sci-fi movies produced, but I digress.

Despite the fact that this is a "low budget" movie with a big budget and stars like Jack Nicholson, Glenn Close, Michael J. Fox, Sarah Jessica Parker and Pierce Bronson, and a super thin plot, it is very enjoyable. It has some rather humorous moments, I won't spoil them, but if you decide to watch this DVD see how the Martians destroy Easter Island.

I enjoyed this film more than I expected and I knew that I would at least kinda like it, so my expectations were surpassed. As I said at the beginning this is a film where if you turn off your mind you enjoy it ten times more than if you think through it. A prime example of this is the way Earth is saved from the Martians. If your thinking through the movie, you'll wonder how did a kid in the Arizona dessert get the word about his Ultimate weapon spread across the world so quickly, with out telling anybody about it? Did everybody in the entire world come up with the very same idea at the same idea? I think not, that is one of the reasons I turned my mind off on this one.

Technically, from a consumer's point of view, I didn't like the way the menu is controlled, I'm not exactly sure why but I just didn't. I thought the saucer theme was cute but kind of boring, I think they could have spent some more time on the menu and had the Martians do things; for example, when you choose something to view a Martian would shoot that particular flying saucer, making it explode and then the screen would fade into what you wanted. I also hate the cardboard/plastic "Clamshell" box, I've never been a fan of those.

Now onto the Technical Gobble-de-gunk of this review.

The extra stuff is:
Interactive Menus
Production notes
Scene Access
English, French and Spanish Languages and Subtitles
Two Trailers
Anamorphic transfer on one side, pan and scan on the other
Alternate Music Only audio

I would recommend this movie to Sci-Fi fans, People who had "Mars Attacks!" cards as kids, and folks who enjoy mindless entertainment and don't need to analyze every little detail of what they are watching. I guess that means Trekkies wouldn't like this movie much.

The Picture was very good, very little disappointment there, and the sound was OK nothing unusual, although on my system it sounded weird at points, but that is just my particular set up. So... I Give Mars Attacks a 4 for Picture and a 3 for Sound.

Summary: Should've been MST3K fodder......
Review: Who's crackpot idea was it to make a dumb, science fiction spoof with big stars? Fortunately, I saw this in a drive-in with my parents. We first saw the live action film, "101 Dalmatians," which was awesome. I almost fell asleep watching "Mars Attacks." If I saw that in a regular movie theater, I would've walked out and demanded my money back. Why oh why did Mike and the bots overlook this piece of garbage?

Summary: ACK! ACK! ACK!
Review: MARS ATTACKS! has gotten a lot of bad press becuase people miss the intention that Burton had. The disc is given a decent transfer with interactive menus, trailers, alternate language, and my personal favorite: a spearate music only track where you here nothing but Danny Elfman's amazing score and the various songs while watching the movie. A good movie and a good DVD. Leave MARS ATTACKS! alone. It's a cute flick.
