Rating: Summary: Among the most profound cultural commentaries in recent film Review: Anyone who only saw the first ten minutes of this film would mistake it for something lightweight and fancy, a chance to show off special effects in order to capitalize on nostalgia for the 50's. That would be wrong. This movie is a sometimes agonizingly subtle commentary on the modernist yearning for a simpler past and how far we have really come. Take the following essay questions as hints as to what's really going on in the film: (1) Why doesn't Jennifer transform until she reads Lady Chatterly? (2) Why must it be Lady Chatterly rather than some other book? (3) Why does the wall mural resemble Picasso's Guernica? (4) Why are we initially misled into believing that the only ingredient necessary for the transformation is sex? (5) Why are they safe in the bowling alley? (6) How is David different at the end of the film than at the beginning? etc.
Rating: Summary: One of the Best. EVER! Review: This is it. This is what filmmaking is all about. Make a movie ABOUT filmmaking. This is the premise behind "Pleasantville", a very pleasant movie focusing on a very pleasant town with very pleasant people. Reese Witherspoon and the excellent Tobey Maguire are brother and sister. They are thrown into the real-life world of their favorite TV show, and they are the stars! In this town, everyone is happy, the temperature is always 72 degrees, and the basketball team can't miss a shot! That is, until the two teens get wrapped up in this strange world, where very unpleasant things begin to happen. Most notably, some of the town gains color, and so do some of the people. In a hint of real-life racism, the "colored" people are discriminated against and are hated because of their superiority. People begin to have affairs, and the town becomes a mess. A terrific cast and a very "pleasant" film, this wonderful achievement is not to be missed!
Rating: Summary: It would be lucky to get 3 Review: This was somewhat interesting but I think the whole story wouldve been better had diffrent actors played the roles of David and Jennifer. The main menu seemed cool and it seemed like it would be a good film, the first 30 min were somewhat interesting but I did not like the characters, they didnt interest me or i couldnt relate to them or picture those actors in that role, frankly they didnt do a good job. I loved reese witherspoon in other roles but this one i hated. Im not going to get into the whole story because it contains some deep messages and its strange, i LIKE strange but this film was not entertaining , IT WAS BORING AFTER the first 40 min and it was long. I love deep meaningful films with messages but this just didnt do it for me, that whole black and white into color. The color was interesting but the story lacked. Just wasnt my cup of tea, If youre into boring films and 50s stuff you might like this, only reason id recomend this film is to see the visual stuff, its innovative, other than that skip this.
