Summary: A special effects dream..but lacked some things.
Review: Despite the very creative use of color against black and white Pleasantville's plot seems unthinkable. The unreal circumstances revolving around the transformation from California to Pleasantville are too Sci-Fi for a movie of the genre. Holding the movie together are the brilliant performances of Witherspoon, Maguire, and Joan Allen. Overall a good movie that with a little more thought could have been great. 3 stars.

Summary: Fantastic!!!!!!!!!!!
Review: This movie is fun, invigorating, and it makes you think. It has a lot of references to the Civil War period and it gives you a whole new outlook on discrimination. I highly suggest his movie for young and not so young.

Summary: One of the best films of 1998
Review: This is a very good movie you think is gonna be a simple comedy or the same as Truman Show but it's not. This one of the most original films I have seen in my life and the way they put black and white with color looks beatiful.I don't know how everybody forgot about this movie almost nobody ever mentions it as on of the best movies of the year.

Summary: Overrated
Review: Trying this again. Visually a great movie, but too many bones to pick. First of all, older sitcoms weren't THAT sterile. ( Did Beaver ever eat a breakfast like that? It never rained in an old sitcom? C'mon.) Also, why didn't the mob turn to color when thrashing the malt shop? Exactly when and where did the Whitey character enter the movie? Could go on but spent too many moments looking at the screen (when I wasn't dozing off ) and saying...WELL, DUH! Could have used some (any) humor and seemed as if it was written by someone who watches Mtv WAY too much. Thank you.

Summary: One of the greatest films ever made -- no kidding
Review: I have always been upset that this film never received the attention it deserved at its release. Many probably saw the effects in the trailer and decided there was nothing else to it. Some probably saw the sitcom-style premise and expected weightless comedy. Others who saw the film decided that it was a jokey put-down of 1950s America and left it at that.

They all missed the point.

Pleasantville is that rare piece of art that works on many levels, and has as much depth as you are willing to see. The metaphor of color only seems gimmicky if you haven't seen how it is used. Better yet, this film rewards repeat viewings and discussion. It also has that other hallmark of great storytelling: Its two-hours-plus seem to fly by in an instant. I dare anyone to watch fifteen minutes and not be hooked.

Go ahead. Rent it. You'll be back to buy it.

Summary: This movie is Amazing
Review: I loved it from start to finish. This was a highly creative movie that was incredible. Yes I know, others have downed it, but that doesn't change my opinion. Pleasentville was smart, witty, charming, and dramatic. The message is clear and displyed very well. The acting is fabulous, especially Joan Allen. She is an amazing actress and deserved a Academy Award nomination. The costumes are great, the visual effects are incredible, and the score is quite pleasent. This movie touched me and will remain my favorite of '98

Summary: IT IS THE MOST CREATIVE MOVIE YOU"LL EVER SEE!!!
Review: I have all ways been a big fan of movies that have people from totally different generations met up, but I will have to say the only reason I watched this one because it is just so creative!!!!!! I think color and B&W look beautiful together. I'm not giving this movie 5 stars because it might just put you to sleep, but it has a really important message in it that you can not explain but can sense when you watch this film. If you havent seen this film you are for sure missing out. everyone should see this film

Summary: Could have been a contender
Review: Too bad.. one of those movies that could have been something special. Wonderful to see and marvel over the technical aspects but as usual the story left a little to be desired. Would have been better if Pleasantville were a little more (un)realistic. Did the Cleavers ever eat a breakfast like that? I think the old sitcoms had rain once in while also. Some things didn't make much sense to me either, such as why didn't the mob change color after trashing the malt shop, when our hero did after fighting with Whitey? And when exactly did Whitey enter the movie? Maybe I was dozing by then. I'm probably being too picky but I'm tired of seeing movies that look brilliant , but seem to be written or edited with boxing gloves on.

Summary: A Truly Thought-provoking Film
Review: I've seen this movie two times, and after my second viewing I discovered and understood a few things I missed during my initial viewing. Of course, films that aren't fully digested the first time usually end up being the best. Everything about this movie is well done. The acting is good, the special effects are amazing, and all kinds of thought-provoking themes float throughout the movie. The movie deals with many topics: mainly racism. The vandalization of the malt shop and the burning of the books signify aspects of Nazi Germany for instance. Myriad subjects-some more distinct than others are covered throughout this surprisingly good movie. Recommended.
