Rating: Summary: A true miracle Review: Pleasantville is the best film of 1998, and probably the most underrated. It starts out like a comedy, where two 90's teens get zapped into the world of Pleasantville, only to discover they must go along with the scripted lives of the characters. When the hormonal sister brings real emotion to the people who only live by what they know, things begin to change into color. That's when the true meaning of the movie slowly begins to reveil itself. Sounds gimicky? Of course it is...but you have to look far deep down into this movie to understand it's full meaning. It talks about change and how it affects us, it talks about how change affects the people around us, and how we are often scared of what change can do. It's about bringing our true inner emotions out into the open, where everyone can see them, and not being afraid of the results. The cast is perfect, especially the angelic Joan Allen as the socially repressed housewife afraid to show her true colors. Everything from the score, to the art direction, to the use of colors in the movie could not be more perfect. We should be grateful that in a time when Hollywood throws out action flicks and special effects humdrum by the dozens that a small gem of a film like Pleasantville arrives at the wake of when movies seem to be at their worst. It proves there are people in Hollywood with true ideas that can amount to something special. This film is a classic, comparable to the Wizard of Oz.
Rating: Summary: ONE OF THE BEST FILMS OF '98! Review: This movie was very entertaining and the cast was perfect for the parts. I could sit down and watched it again if I found the time. I am usually critical of movies and always find some fault but this film I didn't find one fault.
Rating: Summary: A Very Different Movie Review: I never saw a movie where Black & White and Color come together. I think Pleasantville is a great movie, but at the end, it kind of began to get slow. Even though it was mainly about racism, I still liked the movie, because I like old black & white shows from the 50's and 60's. I've never heard of Pleasantville-as a show, so I don't know if there really is one or not, but if there isn't, Pleasantville is a very well-done imitation of an old 50's/60's show, and the movie is very well-done, as well.
Rating: Summary: Not as "Charming" as you might think Review: This movie was absoutly the worst, and in my opinion most offensive movie I have ever seen. The film, in subtle and many not so subtle ways trashes the traditional values that once made the family and our country strong. What is not shown in this feature is the ultimate outcome of Pleasantville's newfound "enlightenment". A town full of heart ache, disease, and moral bankrupcy. Sound familiar?
Rating: Summary: Neat Special Effects and Story Line Review: This movie is the neatest movie ever made! Special effects and everything! Sometimes this movie makes you wish you were stuck in the show with them, although they are manipulating it (YOU may not want them to). Not much humor, but that doesn't mean any of this movie is bad. I saw this one four times, and it became predictable after the second time.
Rating: Summary: What can I say Review: Pleasantville is not your typical drop of water. It isn't even a drop; it's more like that Craft Mac & Cheese commercial where there is the flood of melted cheese. Not to suggest that this movie is cheesy. It's the best of the year. THIS IS NOT LEAVE IT TO BEAVER!! This is an example (exaggerated obviously) of 1950's America. They were so good because they either didn't have all the "problems" of today or they chose to ignore them. You want to know why the mob didn't start changing colors when they trashed the soda shop? Because they were doing something not against their nature. That, and they did it in a group of people that thought similarly. The people in the mob were easily led to believe that they were right.
Rating: Summary: Excellent art direction Review: Lighthearted, amusing comedy which becomes unnecessarily menacing at the end when evil characters start becoming racist; because race issue is resolved so quickly and without much thought, these racist overtones are somewhat disturbing. Art direction, however, is excellent. Sound on the DVD is o.k. Great Fiona Apple video directed by P.T. Anderson is included in the Extra Features. Another very good New Line disc in another very crappy WB's case.
Rating: Summary: Pleasantville brings back a time of change -- remember? Review: Very good film. But, don't get too "hung up" on the technology or story line. Rather, this film is one that will ignite some memories of the past ... could be the mid to late '60's. It evokes some introspection from the viewer. As I viewed the film I found myself not so concerned with the major storyline, but rather looking at the "colors" that we so often do when we turn on the t.v. Ergo, forget any "groundbreaking" technology or intense story ... look inside and remember the days when we lived the changes ... remember the energy we had ... remember the desire to make change! Terrific!
Rating: Summary: Slow, Slower, Slowest Review: What an incredibly boring movie! It started off pretty good. There were several funny scenes in the first half-hour. Then things kept getting more serious and heavy and slow. There were several times when I was expecting the characters to stop and preach their message. It was disappointing to waste my time watching this movie.
Rating: Summary: Ohhh Wow! Review: This was a great movie. I love Reese Witherspoon. Paul Walker is-Ohh my God-so fine. I love everything he does even when he's not the star.
