Rating: Summary: Unfortunately overlooked by the public Review: Gary Ross "Pleasantville" was released shortly after "The Truman Show". Maybe that's the reason why it didn't perform very well at the box office. It also lacks a major movie star like Jim Carrey in the lead. Yet, "Pleasantville" deserves attention. Not only is it wonderfully written and acted. It is one of those rare films that adds a visual dimension to the story. Something all films should at least try to achieve. The usage of black-and-white in combination with color gives the director the opportunity for many striking and poetic images. One could argue that the films is sometimes too didactic and obvious in its symbolism, but since this it is intended as a parable, such criticism cannot hurt this film very much. Perhaps this film has cult following on Video and DVD. I hope so.
Rating: Summary: This is the Most Under Rated Movie Since Citizen Kane Review: Along with Pleasentville being the most under rated movie since Citizen Kane, Pleasentville shall also live on as a testament to film makers who are not in touch with their marketing. This film was marketed as a kids film, with a typical, boring oversexed teenager run rampant in an innocent setting filled with leave it to beaver stereotypes. People who went to see this film with this in mind were sorely dissapointed, because Pleasentville is not a brain dead miasma to watch while anticipating an evening of video games and beer. This film portrays all the grandeur of Hiedi Liefkowitz's brilliant documentary style hero worship, the innovation of Orson Well's thought provoking camera angles and sharp chiarascuro treatment of black and white, and a truly Orwellian Story. This is the best film I have seen in years, and is an intellectual treat for those who are dissapointed with today's mundane landscape of knee jerk, thoughtless wastes of film. There are points in this movie subtly remeniscent of Patton (when the dawning tyrant mayor makes a grandious speech against the backdrop of a bowling alley illuminated scoresheet), and a Capraesque Mr. Smith goes to Washington (during the finale in the court house). This is what the medium of Black and white was meant to convey in every sense. Treat yourself, ignore all the marketing mush you have absorbed about this film. Leave your mind open and just WATCH this film, let it spellbind you! You'll be a better person for it. If you buy the DVD version, watch the film, then watch the bonus trailer, and you will understand what a travesty the marketing campaign was for this film.
Rating: Summary: like being hit in the face with a bat Review: grossly exaggerated moral pretense that is insulting and unrelenting. Great food for those who do not feed themselves.

Rating: Summary: I agree: Nothing Is As Simple As Black and White Review: In the world of black and white, no one suspected that their world and lives would been changed forever. As two 90's kids, played by Tobey Maguire and Reese Witherspoon, are zapped into the black and white televions sit and soon find themselves trapped in a world of a "perfect place." They were trapped into the televsion by the remote control they were fighting over with--and ZAP! They found themselves in the wonderful world of black and white. Everything in the town seems so perfect, that the youngest girl is frustrated over it. She wants to get out of the black and white world of Pleasantville. But the boy seems to be attached to the place. And he wants to stay. He has seen every Pleaseville sitcom reruns on T.V., that he just about knows everyone in Pleasantville. So the only way the girl can get out of Pleasantville is to make everything her way. But the strange guy that keeps appearing on the television, played by Andy Griffin, tells them that to do nothing, absoulutely nothing that has to do with "unpleasant things" in Pleasantville. But the girl doesn't listen and starts dating other guys and having sex with other guys she's seeing. That's when the problem starts. The whole town of Plaseantville soon turns out to be not so pleasant after all. Spectacualar visual special effects! Nothing is as simple as black and white.
Rating: Summary: Piece of "Art"? Hardly! Review: I went into this movie with an open mind ... I had heard so many good things about it. What a complete waste of film! Calling it a piece of "art" is utter nonsense ... the whole thing seemed like a senior film project ... senior in high school! ...for all you people who think this is one of the best movies ever made, why don't you go watch Jurassic Park or Titanic ... I'm sure those are at the top of your list as well. The one star is for the two good things in the movie: William H. Macy and the special effects.
Rating: Summary: Strangely engaging.... Review: The promos for this movie got my attention; I rented it and then watched it three times in fairly close succession...It spoke to me on several different levels; memories evoked from my days of early televsion viewing; the fascination of the techological genius and the messages about making judgements and the subjugation of feelings. Toward the end it suddenly slowed down and wasn't as snappy..but I obviously thought it was worth it to continue to watch..2 more times..because of all it DOES have going for it.
Rating: Summary: Nicely done DVD Review: Just a few comments. The movie has a good story. The special effects seem like they could be better, but watch the special section on how they did it and you will see the technology is tricky. Best part of this DVD? Fiona Apple's music video where she does a 360 degree flip. Gosh she's cute!
Rating: Summary: Dissappointing but okay. Review: I thought Pleasantville would of been 10x better than this - it was really, really boring near the end, at the start is was funny and cool though, so it only JUST earns 3 stars. It stars Tobey Maguire and Reese Witherspoon as 2 teens are are transfeered back to the 50's when fighting over a remote control.
