Rating: Summary: god bless john candy Review: john candy puts on the best performance of his career. this move has it all. great cast, great comedy, great cameo appearances, great everything. its better than playing pick up sticks with your but cheeks!
Rating: Summary: This film was produced for today's road warrior! Review: John Candy's best performance. This film was produced for a subset of American culture often overlooked in mainstream entertainment today. For those who travel for a living, there are scenes in this film that will bring back memories for you, good and bad. The car rental scene with Steve Martin is gem! Vulgar for some, but for those who have been there before, dead on the money and superbly delivered. I am STILL WAITING for this on DVD!
Rating: Summary: FUNNY AND SAD Review: This is a rare comedy that actually makes room for character developement. It is also full of hilarious scenes and one great joke after another. When I first watched this when I was 12 I couldn't help but crying at the end. It's not often a comedy does that too me. I agree with Leonard Maltin on his point about the music. Most of it is irritating but during the serious scenes it changes to ambient music that I like. The DVD has ZERO extra features, is in Dolby 5.1 and is undermatted at 1.78:1 instead of the theatrical 1.85:1.
Rating: Summary: candy and martin at their finest Review: a story about a shower hook salesman and a suit and tie executive and their travels together on thanksgiving. candy and martin are the perfect comedy team---there are so many memorable scenes...one noted the hotel *pillow* one. it also is a very touching movie about how people may be laughing on the outside, while trying to hide some very sad feelings. candy was truly gifted not only for his comedy but also very believable in the dramatic scenes. I watch this movie at least a few times a year not only for a good laugh but to be reminded to be thankful for what I have. there is one scene where the famous 4 letter word really flies, so keep your hand on the ff remote control button if there are children present during the rental car scene.
Rating: Summary: Very Funny Yet Very Touching Review: This movie is loaded with some hillarious moments. Who could forget when John Candy takes off his socks and shoes on the plane home for Thanksgiving and twirls his socks in the air causing Steve Martin to gag. I tell you the world lost alot when John Candy left this earth. He could always manage to put a smile on my face with somewhat carefree attitude. However, the truth hits home in this movie, when its revealed that poor John has no where to go for the holidays. Sometimes the best medicine for lonliness is laughter and this film proves it to a T.
Rating: Summary: A truly very very funny movie Review: This is one of the greatest comedies ever made. I have this on VHS and it is pretty worn out. I can't wait for the DVD version to come out. Every scene has something funny until the end when it has a great serious ending. If you can't laugh all the way through this movie you need to check your pulse.
Rating: Summary: "THOSE ARE'NT PILLOWS!" Review: A very funny and touching film. Martin and Candy are a brilliant comedy duo in this classic 80s hit. It is quite sad in places but the comedy is very much strong with some very memorable scenes.
Rating: Summary: The reason that we should never take the word of a critic Review: I spent the last 15 minutes reading the other reviews on this site and I had to add my thoughts as well. It is nice to know that there are so many other people who "get" this movie. A great combination of two of the greatest comedic actors ever. The realism of this comedy is frightening. It is clear to me that all of the critics that didn't like this have a bad sense of humor. You can't even have a bad sense of humor and not find this movie incredible. It is able to touch the funny bone and the heart at the same time. Don't miss a chance to watch this classic!
Rating: Summary: A Classic Comedy Review: This must be recognized as one of the best comedies of all time. This is a quintessential movie that should be part of every video collection. A brilliant combination of sarcasm, slapstick and just about every other type of humour that exists...Everyone can relate to a similar travel nightmare. Both John Candy and Steve Martin turn in stellar performances.
Rating: Summary: Planes, Trains and Automatic Laughs Review: Without a doubt a classic. The chemistry between Martin and Candy is UNforgettable. With Martin playing the 'straight' man to Candy's laugh-a-minute quick talker, there are numerous scenes that stick out. From the 'puppies' in the plane to the dog in the truck, from the 'bed scene' to the 'pajama party,' from the hands between two pillows to the sloppy handshake, from the break up to the make up, each has its moments. The final head shot of Candy at the end brings the true meaning of this film to a marvelous climax. A MUST see.
