Summary: home blech home!
Review: Tom Hanks and Shelly Long star in this 1980s Steven Spielberg movie as Walter and Anna, a Manhattan couple who are unceremoniously evicted from her ex-husband's apartment and must search for new housing. They find what seems to be a steal -- a huge million-dollar mansion for next to nothing --- and move in, only to be besieged with a collapsing staircase, chocolate-brown "water", rotting wood, exploding doorbell, you name it. Probably one of the funniest scenes I have ever seen is when Tom Hanks sinks through the rug into a hole in the den floor and gets stuck.

Broke and cranky from sinking more and more resources into the money pit in which they live, Anna and Walter snipe at each other. The shady contractors they hire say they can get the job done in 2 weeks -- and continue saying that four months later.

The house may or may not get rebuilt, but will Walter and Anna survive as a couple? Being a typical 1980s comedy which paved the way for everything starring Meg Ryan for 16 years, you already know the answer. But it is still a hilarious movie to watch, depsite its predictability.

Summary: So accurate, it could clasify as a "documentary"!
Review: Overall this picture is a must watch for anybody considering major home renovations, or just needing to laugh out loud.

Working with contractors on a scale such as this movie portrays can be an experience of a lifetime. The accuracy of the characters and the shenanagins that can occur was so real, that this picture could also be considered a doumentary. It had to be based on someone's personal experience.

A good preview for anyone looking to purhase and rehab a "fixer upper" aka handyman specials. Entertaining and Educational!

Summary: if you wanna laugh your [....]
Review: rent this. You will be having some serious belly laughs. Tom Hanks and Shelly Long buy a house that turns out to be a TOTAL lemon. Everything goes wrong. I love this movie because even tho things constantly go wrong for the main characters, the movie doesn't become a totaly unhappy drag like all those Ben Stiller comedies, especially 'Meet The Parents'. I hate flicks like MTP because they seem just so mean spirited. Flicks like that become hard to watch, for me, because while all these tragic things are going wrong, there are not enough GOOD, STRONG JOKES, to ease the suffering I as the audience am experiencing along with the main character. There has to be a balance. The Money Pit gets it just right. It's got strong, genuinely funny dialogue, awesome, hilarious slapstick, pratfalls, and a really satisfying ending. Plus, you remember the Long Blond Haired Bad Guy from the first Die Hard flick? He's in this as an orchestra director / Shelly Longs ex husband and he is HILARIOUS. Anybody should rent this flick.

Summary: Such a hilarious movie!
Review: I have seen this movie several times and it is ranked one of my top 10 all time favorites. Tom Hanks does an excellent job expressing himself. I laugh out loud every time I watch this movie. His laugh is so contagious especially in the bathtub scene, one can't help but to laugh along with him. This movie is an excellent film for the whole family, one that stands the test of time. Buy it, watch it, memorize it!

Summary: It's all about Commitment!
Review: I absolutely adored this movie. I am normally not a fan of movies where everything goes completely wrong for the decent, "good" characters of the film, but this one had a meaningful plot in which hit me each and everytime something terrible happened to Tom Hanks' character and his girlfriend in their new LEMON house. It was all about commitment. They had every right to be screaming and yelling at each other for getting into the situation that they were in. Yet, the didn't. They stood by each other when the bathtub (and the bed) fell through the floor, the kitchen blew up, the roof leaked, the staircase crashed and so on. The only thing that damaged their relationship was when Tom Hank's girlfriend told him that she slept with her ex-husband. Which is completely understandable. Being a woman, that would be the one thing that I couldn't forgive the man that I was with, for doing. However, regardless of that, they realized that being together was more important than not being together. All of this takes place as their "lemon" house is being rebuilt. As is their relationship. The writers of "The Money Pit" are intelligent and remarkable and have my complete confidence and respect.

Summary: That infectious, INSANE laugh!
Review: If you want to hear a great, unbridled laugh...get this movie. It is literally one of the funniest movies. Tom Hanks nails the concept of comedic timing. He is so great at expressing annoyance, delerium, anger, jealousy, skeptiscm, and pride.
This movie follows Tom Hanks and girlfriend (Shelly Long) through their tumultuous ordeal of renovating a "lemon" of a seemingly beautiful mansion. There is a classic scene where the tub falls through the ceiling onto the 1st floor and that is where the hysteria really starts. But my favorite scene is when Tom Hanks gets stuck in the floor and starts talking about care bears and farm animals. Classic!
Anyhow, you will not go wrong in getting this movie, it is a kick in the pants!

Summary: The house gets top billing
Review: I once saw a tribute to Tom Hanks where they dismissed this movie as one of his inconsequential early works. Initially, I was incredulous about this because this movie has a special place in my heart as probably the funniest movie I've ever seen. But after I thought about it a bit, I think I understand the point made in that tribute. This movie is not a showcase for actors, the uncontested star of this movie is the house.

The three main actors, Hanks, Shelley Long, and Alexander Gudunov are all terrific in their roles, but the little love-triangle drama that goes on between them serves only as a backdrop and a reason to pull off all those ingenious sight-gags with the house.

In this movie, the script writer and set technicians are king. These professionals ought to have a showcase for their talents to be spotlighted from time to time, and they sure made the most of the opportunity with this one. The calamitous frailty of this ostensibly beautiful house renders so many brilliantly done scenes that this movie still makes me laugh out loud after seeing it several times. A joke loses all its power to amuse after the surprise of the punch-line is lost, but these sight-gags are so funny I can break out laughing while driving down a lonely highway just thinking about them.

Some movies lose their effectiveness because the makers get confused and try to do too may things - the message gets muddled. The best movies exhibit no such confusion and tell their story with minimal distraction. This movie is about this house, and what these artists do with this prop is brilliantly and enduringly funny.

Even in my business, where everyone has seen this movie, and we ought to be more serious, when anyone inquires about some project we know well will be completed when hell freezes over, if then, our stock answer is "Two weeks!"
