Summary: Contemporary India at last
Review: Mira Nair has done it again! As an Indian living in the United States for the past 15 years, I was extremely glad this film got the response it did. I've seen it twice. I am a child of modern India, and have no connection to the India of Kipling and the Raj or of Mother Teresa, poverty and mysticism. Until this film came along India was portrayed either from the perspective of the "good old days" of British rule (when Indians were treated as second class citizens) or as a land of grinding poverty peppered with snake charmers and mendicants as quaint interludes amidst the sheer hopelessness. Sadly, Lagaan, India's Oscar nominee did nothing to dispel this myth. "Monsoon Wedding" however, is about the India I know. Vibrant, joyous and real. The family depicted in the film could have been mine - and Dubey and Alice were as real to me as it is possible for characters in a film to be. This was also the first film in English to address the issues that are very real for the Indian diaspora - issues of identity and of belonging to two cultures, yet to neither. In fact the first to acknowledge that they do not all run laundrettes, corner stores or drive taxicabs. If you're interested in India, forget the Jewel in the Crown and the City of Joy. This is the real India... a land where cell phones and PDA's co-exist with rickshaws; a country with the highest number of computer engineers, where electricity is not taken for granted; a country where sand traps at golf courses are painstakingly raked over by hand...The cinematography, script and music were fabulous. Naseerudin Shah is probably one of the best character actors in Indian film, and his portrayal of Lalit was very believable. The ensemble cast was outstanding. Probably the best film set in India I have seen and one of the twenty or so best I have ever watched, I'm going to buy this film on DVD when available.

Summary: It's raining relatives...
Review: "Monsoon Wedding" brings together a myriad of images associated with India--rich colours, soulful music, and vibrant life.

In depicting the luxurious and indulgent lifestyle of an urban, elite, Punjabi family it goes some way towards shattering the Western myth of an India wholly composed of whithering maharajas or impoverished rikshaw-wallas.

The film is witty and entertaining, and for anyone who has a large extended Indian family, is reminiscent of the boisterous clamour that surrounds everyday life.

However, as the story unfolds, one cannot help but feel that the film was made with the express intention of appealing to a very specific audience: judges and viewers of film festivals.

This was evidenced by contrived family interactions that were not authentic and seemed quite improbable: an Indian bride and groom would not show such open affection at the Sangeet for family and friends to see; Indian parents would not speak 90% English among themselves no matter how upper-class; and perceived homosexuality of an only son would not be addressed off-handedly and with such humour.

Unlike "Lagaan" which extended the traditional Indian film genre to new heights, it seems that "Monsoon Wedding" distanced itself from it to such an extent that it was barely recongnisable as an Indian film.

Nonetheless, a very good film for what it was--a hybrid Indian/English film designed to entertain not your average audience.

Summary: total depiction
Review: hi ,
i would rate this movie as superb cuz i my self liked it very much. It was a maximim depiction of things going around in this kind a place like, culture and things going on in the families even such small thingslike a kid is tried to be driven by parents, feelings of a serving made and things going between young ppl, and Mr. Dubey. the most good thing was that the writer and director really gave a honest and inner view of he personality of a person who unnaturally is a child abuser and within the family..
songs are good. writer's Grip was tight on the plot and whole idea of movie, exteriors and interior and felings and situation of the father and other main characters. In short i can say that it was complete scene of a typical suncontinental surroundings. and i congratulate mira nair the writer(if i spelled correctly) and nasirudin shah on another great performance. i must say whole team is good : Congratulations

Summary: A cynic's favorite romance
Review: I am a highly cynical person. I can't watch Moulin Rouge without laughing and I hate Sleepless in Seattle. I went in Monsoon Wedding with a bad mood and a history of negativity. But this movie blew me away. The romances, the troubles of the people, the seamless transition between languages was just too beautiful for words. This is a remarkably human movie with enough grace to break the heart of the world's most jaded New Yorker (or anyone else).

Summary: More surprises just like you'd expect
Review: This is her Nair's best film in my book. It proves, with many laughs, that the insanity of the wedding ceremony and the nuttiness that leads up to it comes to us from centuries and continents away.

You may not understand the language they are speaking, but if you have ever even been remotely close to a wedding or someone getting married, you will understand what they are doing.

There are a couple of subplots that will make you go YESSS! when they are resolved. This is a film about normal average people being totally nuts at their best.

Summary: A Fabulous Film
Review: This is the best Indian film since the days of Satyajit Ray.
Mira Nair's best film. For people who like the films of ALTMAN or CASSAVETES. The beginning works like a ballet of characters, then settles down into a marvelously scripted scenes of family life with jealousy, generation gaps, sex and skeletons in the cupboard. It should have been the Oscar entry in Foreign films. To see as quickly as possible.

Summary: A realistic view of post modern Indian tradition
Review: What would happen if you put in a hidden camera into a punjabi family home during a wedding? That's what monsoon wedding is all about. The movie is realy funny but doesn't fail to tackle cliched issues like "a cheating to-be bride", "child molestation", "never ending family fueds" in a simple and non controversial manner. The actors (many of them are first timers) are really effective and they simply get the point across without the "hoo haas" of typical indian cinema offerings. I have always liked Mira Nair's movies, but this one takes the cake, especially with Ms. Dhawan as the writer. A definite must for all viewers, be they Indian or non.
