Summary: Star Wars, look out!
Review: Space Bum Lone Starr (played by Bill Pullman) and his sidekick Barf (John Candy playing a half-man/half-dog who's his own best friend) find themselves in hot water when Pizza the Hut calls in their debt of one million space-bucks. Quick cash dances before their greedy eyes when they are called upon to rescue Princess Vespa (Daphne Zuniga) from the clutches of the evil Spaceballs led by the nasty, brutish and short Lord Dark Helmet (Rick Moranis).Getting hold of Vespa proves only the beginning of their adventures, though. Throughout the movie they continue to dodge Dark Helmet and his overlord President Skroob (Mel Brooks), meet Yogurt (Mel Brooks, again) and learn to use "The Schwartz", rescue planet Druidia, defeat the Spaceballs, and find true love. [Color, created in 1987, with a running time of 1 hour, 39 minutes.] Now that my own children have discovered Star Wars, it was time to introduce them to the ultimate parody thereof - Spaceballs! Created by Mel Brooks, this great movie leaves one in stitches. And, not only is Star Wars the theme of the day, quick references are made to Alien and other movies. Now, it did earn a PG rating, based on a number of swearwords and a few off-color sequences, such as Skroob appearing briefly in bed with two women, using a urinal, and so forth. However, with a little judiciousness, this movie can be watch with smaller children. So, overall I do recommend this movie highly.

Review: Mel Brooks nails the sci-fi genre, particularly the Star Wars Trilogy, with this hilarious spoof. Brooks' movies have traditionally been hit-or-miss, but like Blazing Saddles and History of the World Part I, Brooks has his subject matter dead in his satirical sights. Rick Moranis makes a perfect Dark Helmet, a young Bill Pullman pulls of a sufficiently roguish "Lone Star," and John Candy is well-suited as the Barf the Mawg. Joan Rivers also does the voice for "Dot Matrix," a robot who is vaguely reminiscent of another famous golden skinned druid. Brooks himself makes hilarious appearances as General Scroob and Yogurt, and every sight gag seems to perfectly poke fun at the Holy Trilogy, from "combing the desert" to "ludicrous speed." The film also takes smaller, but nonetheless obvious jabs at other classic sci-fi, including the transforming "Mega-Maid," obvious bows to "Planet of the Apes" and "Alien," and a faulty transporter a-la Star Trek. As usual, only Brooks could get away with producing a movie featuring a spoiled "Druish princess," men fighting with light swords held in decidedly phallic positions, and jawa-like little people whose language consists of various inflections of "dink." Brooks makes us revel in the sheer political incorrectness of it all, for we know that this is unabashed theater of the absurd. A hoot and a half from start to finish, this inexpensive DVD should be part of the collection of anyone who enjoys good science fiction or extremely silly but high quality spoof comedy.

Summary: My Favorite comedy of all time
Review: Next To History of the world, this is my favorite! The wacky adventures of a man and his dog in a flying winnebeigo who are asked by a king to find his run away daughter whos beeing chased after by the SpaceBalls! This has some of the best laughs in a movie ive ever seen! and its a shame they cut out the "A**HOLE" scene when they show it on TV because that is the funniest scene in the movie! Mel brooks out did himself with this movie, and combined parodies such as obvious ones for space like "Star Wars" "star Trek" & "2001 Space Odessey" but genisly also added in some parody moments from "Dune" "Wizard Of Oz" "planet of the apes" and so much more! To me this is Mels best movie to date! It will always be my favorite and I hope it becomes one of yours too! May the Shwartz be with you!

Summary: Great comedy
Review: Mel Brooks, comic genius. Spaceballs is the best space movie ever made. Great spoof on Star Wars, and I must say that I'd rather watch this than Star Wars. If you're into stupid comedies, this is a must see. Rick Moranis is great as Lord Helmet, John Candy as Barf, and Mel himself as President of Spaceball city, and of course the all powerful Yogurt. May the schwartz be with you!

Summary: May The Shawartz be with you..again
Review: Someone just had to say it. This film is a hilarious satire with tons of Star Wars references not to mention crude humor. Is there anything Mel Brooks can't do? He even makes the film feel like a serious sci-fi film at times, but then the mention of something like a maid "sucking and blowing" the air out of a planet sets you back into top comic wrap speed. The cast is great with the quick zingers but mostly it is Rick Moranis as Dark Helmet. He's a finny little guy and his quick witty lines are cleverly timed. Let's get into the story which is leads us to the Planet Drewida where the Princess is about to be married off to an uncaring prince. At the same time planet of people know as the Spaceballs plan to take the air of the Planet. Leave it up to Bill Pullman and John Candy playing a Han Solo and Chewbacca like characters respectively to save the day. They decide to help the princess (played by Daphine Zaniga) and her sassy robot gal pal (voiced by Joan Rivers) out in order to get out of debt of Pizza the Hut. The insanity doesn't end there as the villains try to find out that the Princess has escaped the planet and to help their cause for stealing Drewida's air. So there is the story. And basically a bunch of chaos insues, but the movie plays like an actually action movie with a few spoofs quality. The jokes are so adult (not necessarily sexual, but adult) that I think the film plays as a satire rather than a silly spoof with cheap little sight gags that kids will love. What surprises me is the fact that there is so much swearing and ethnic jokes and the movie only got a PG rating. Mel Brooks is a genius and his jokes of promotion of the movie in the movie are too funny and very typical of the timing of the release (1987). I must say that if you love silly stuff and are an adult, you're going to love this movie. Not those that are easily offended though.

Review: This movie was absolutely crazy and funny!! I couldn't help but laugh the whole way! My favorite moment was the spoofing scene of Alien. Sooo funny. Watch Spaceballs and get ready to laugh hard.

Summary: From A Galaxy Very Very Near...
Review: Director Mel Brooks takes on the world of science fiction films, with SPACEBALLS, a comedy with good intentions. The main target of the movie is the STAR WARS saga. Rick Moranis is pretty funny as the pint sized evil lord, known througout the galaxy as, Dark Helmet. When Helmet captures Princess Vespa (Daphne Zuniga), it is up to space heroes Lone Star (Bill Pullman) and his half man half dog sidekick, Barf (John Candy), to rescue her. As with many of his other films, Brooks gets into the act by playing multiple roles (the best of which is his turn as the wise one-Yogurt). The film also pokes fun at STAR TREK, ALIEN, PLANET OF THE APES, among other films For the most part, the film has a few good laughs (mostly because of Moranis). However, I don't consider the movie as funny as, let's say YOUNG FRANKENSTIEN or HIGH ANXIETY, also directed by Brooks. As I said, There's a few chuckles throughout, but the movie is not as "rapid fire" funny as earlier efforts by the director Turning to the DVD extras, the commentary track by Brooks is "lifted" right from the Laserdisc release, and is pretty good. The vintage featurette is pretty short but has some nice antics from the set. Finally there is the theatrical trailer to top off the DVD. Viewers can choose to watch the film in either Widescreen or Pan and Scan formats SPACEBALLS is a rather modest effort from Brooks. However, if you like Rick Moranis and the late John Candy, this is a must own. Fans of Sci-Fi will also probably like the film too. Recommended with those folks in mind *** and a half stars

Summary: because good is dumb
Review: although not a mel brooks masterpiece this film does not suffer solely from lack of comedic inspiration. in fact i find it to be one of his best. its main problem, in my opinion, was the shift in audiences. for the most part films such as Blazing Saddles and Young Frankenstein catered to an audience that was, by 1987, much older and focusing on family life. plus, brooks' comedic venom was now aimed at a less familiar target in Star Wars. intially, even i had a hard time time convincing myself it was worth seeing. but after repeated viewings i realized that it was as funny as many of brooks' best. now dont get me wrong, you wont laugh as often as you did for High Anxiety but you'll laugh none the less. sadly, the core players of previous films are missing here (Harvey Corman & Madeline Kahn) and it suffers becasue of it but the times were changing and so were the films. only later on did brooks really get into a stupor with Robin Hood: Men In Tights and Dracula: Dead and Lving It, starring the one dimensional Leslie Nielsen.

Review: Spaceballs, a comic masterpiece directed by Mel Brooks, is one of the funniest movies that I have ever seen. I own the trilogy of Star Wars and I watched every movie in the trilogy before I viewed this movie. After I watched Spaceballs, I found myself in a state of pure laughter as I saw Mel Brooks and John Candy imitating the trilogy of Star Wars. Anyone that wants a good funny movie to view should buy Spaceballs today.

Summary: What would life be without Spaceballs
Review: I'm not a really big fan of Star Wars but after I saw Spaceballs I felt like Star Wars must have not been very funny. Now I watch Spaceballs one to two times a day. If I ever win an Oscar I will thank Mel Brooks because his movies were so funny.
