Summary: Swinger's-"It's The Bomb and So Money"
Review: "Swingers" is often mentioned by other reviewers is being a film about the LA club scene in the Mid-1990s, but I think it is a timeless story about human relationships (both love and friendships) that happens to use the LA club scene as a back-drop. I think women will enjoy the film for its portrayal of men-still trying to be "cool" to win women over, about also very sensitive when the relationships do not work out as they hope. It is the film that launched Vince Vaughn's career, and his character (Trent) is one that is virtually impossible not to like. I think most men can relate to Jon Favreau's character (Mike), the proto-typical "nice guy" that has a hard time meeting women, especially since he has just ended a 6-year relationship with a girl back home in New York. The scene where Mike leaves numerous rambling messages on a woman's answering machine only then to discover in horror that she is actually home, is truly classic. Not to spoil the ending, but when Mike realizes that the best way to "win a woman over" is by just being himself, both sexes will be out of their seats and applauding!

I don't think the owning the DVD version is terribly important for a film like this, and that is why I only gave this version of the film four stars. I have seen both the VHS and DVD versions, and the DVD picture and sound quality are only slightly better.

Enjoy this great and heart-warming comedy, and remember, when you are dealt eleven in Blackjack, you always, always double-down!!

Summary: BAD BAD BAD picture quality on this DVD
Review: I recently bought it because I found it to be one of the best films I have come across in years only to find that the DVD version of the movie was horrible. I have over 60 DVDs in my collection and I have to say this is the worst one I have EVER bought. The picture quality is just unbelievably bad... and to think that this movie was so good. What a wasted opportunity. Please pass this info on to other prospective buyers of this DVD. I think they have a right to know how bad the picture quality is before they lay down a 20 dollar bill and some change for it.

Summary: Much more than just "you're money" and "beautiful babies"
Review: I'm going to go out on a limb here and say that this movie really has nothing to do with the early-'90's L.A. lounge revival. Frankly, it could have been set in Disneyland, while the characters were really dressed up as Goofy, Pluto and Donald Duck. Sure the hipster dialogue would have to be adjusted some, but it really wouldn't have mattered much to the overall story.

Writer/Star Jon Favreau (Mikey) has created an entertaining and -- dare I say it? -- educational look at one man coping with a recent breakup, and how to best get back up on the dating horse. His script gets most of its recognition for the creation of memorable catchphrases (I still hear people calling each other "money" or "beautiful babies"), and that's all well and good. But it also contains tremendous insights into how we as men and women meet and get to know each other. There are some wonderful scenes here of heartache and joy.

The cast is, for the most part, amateurish. Obviously, this is a function of the film's meager budget. Everyone gives a gung-ho effort, but most fail to hit their marks dead on. Favreau himself comes off as little more than an actor playing an actor. Even his walk feels forced at times. Thankfully, it doesn't hinder his likability, or the rest of the cast's. The one standout, of course, is Vince Vaughn as "best friend" Trent. Vince has charisma to spare here, taking his role as the smooth-talking Don Juan to the outer limits. He embodies Trent completely. It's one of those parts where whenever he's not in the scene, you find yourself wondering: "I wonder when Trent's coming back!" I'm sitting here thinking of all his great scenes, and frankly, they're too numerous to mention.

Director Liman does a good job with what he's been given. I suppose he had no choice but to shoot the film as a self-conscious, "hey we're making a movie over here" kind of documentary. At times he resorts to gimmickry to catch the audience's attention (like the cognizant answering machine giving Mikey dating tips, or a blatant slo-mo Tarantino rip-off that follows a scene where the characters talk about Tarantino's tendency to employ blatant Scorsese rip-offs), but for the most part he's quite laid back, letting the camera catch the conversations quite naturally. The music, however, is in your face, and justly so. And don't go in thinking that's it's all going to be '50's swing. There's a particularly effective scene where Trent does some nifty seduction work while Heart's 'Magic Man' plays in the background.

But by far the most memorable scene in the movie is Heather Graham's. Her dance number with Favreau is very visceral, and beautiful. There's a moment in there when the song ends, and she is in the middle of a dip, looking up at Mikey with those big eyes, and she's just divine. I dare you not to fall in love with her.

So if you're skeptical of the whole swingers scene, not into the Frank Sinatra mystique, and have never had a Glenlivet, a Glenfiddich, or a Glengarry, don't worry. There's still much about "Swingers" that you'll find enjoyable.

Summary: truthful and hilarious
Review: I think every guy--at one point or another in his life--can associate with the character of Mike (played by Jon Favreau) in "Swingers": he's living in LA, having trouble holding down a job, and is still getting over the breakup of a six-year relationship. Favreau's portrayal of an average Joe who tenses up around women and ends up blowing his chances by talking about his ex is vindicative of the modern male.

"Swingers" is a breezy adventure through the clubs and nightlife of Los Angeles, as a group of friends and struggling actors go out and attempt to score with the "beautiful babies." They're led by Trent (Vince Vaughn), a hepcat guy who talks smooth and has no problem scoring, and is the general example of "cool."

Favreau, who wrote the script, is excellent at portraying an everyman, probably because he doesn't possess prettyboy good looks and his dialogue is so down-to-earth and funny. Actually, even the most minor supporting performance stands out in "Swingers" because of the high energy all around.

This is a very funny portrayal of the modern dating scene that works because we can associate with the characters. Doug Liman's documentary-style directing helps give the proceedings an accuracy that it might not have had if handled by someone else.

Summary: This movie is SO money!!
Review: Incredible characterization of what it's like to be a guy with a close group of a few guy friends. From checking out the parties (and the beautiful babies) to staying in and getting into fights over a little cheating at sega, this movie will make you laugh no matter how many times you watch it just because it feels like they made a movie about you. For the females, this is hit or miss, but for the guys, a definite must have.

As far as DVDs go, this one is definately lacking in features, but I buy DVDs first for the movie, and extras are exactly that, extra. It's worth it to have on a medium that won't deteriorate like VHS, because I'm going to be watching it a lot.

Summary: Quite money indeed
Review: "Swingers" is an engaging and unexpectedly insightful look into the L.A. singles life, there is literally not one moment within the film that feels "Hollywood-ish" at all, every character and every line of dialogue rings true. It's a rarity for a premise as simple as this one not to wear thin by the time it's over, but this one manages to sustain it's quirky quality throughout. The script is brimming with sharply observant humor which never feels like it's been pre-meditated, and everything is balanced just right with touches of pathos. I was actually quite surprised with the depth of the film's vignettes regarding how swingers aren't even in tune with the sterility of their lives. Jon Favreau's performance as the contemplative Mike contrasts brilliantly with Vince Vaughan's brashness, it is like they are two halves of a whole man, and both characters are consistently realised with truth and credibility throughout their odyssey into the nightlife. "Swingers" is only held back by the occasional lags, and I wasn't exactly satisfied with the surface-level portrayal of the women characters. But overall, this is still a film worth watching, it's probaly one of the best films about singles-life you'll ever see.

Summary: One of the Defining Movies of Generation "X"
Review: Swingers is a funny, fast paced all too true view into the life of LA 20 somethings. The hero of our story (Mikey) goes through the trials and tribulations of trying to get over a relationship that was just a little to serious while his friends (led by the hilarious Vince Vaughn) pressure him into moving on with his life.

For the 20 somethings out there (soon to be 30 somethings) this film rings many bells and you will see a little of your friends in all of the characters. From the talking answering machine to the drunk at Denny's scene this movie will make you laugh no matter how many times you watch it. A must own for any DVD collector.
