Rating: Summary: Colorful Review: Renee Zellweger and Ewan McGregor star in the romantic comedy "Down With Love". Zellweger plays a best selling author who doesn't believe in love but begins falling in love with a lady charmer, played by McGregor. Many creative twists and turns occur throughout the movie, although half are predictable. The early 60's theme was wonderfully crafted: the outfits, the hairstyles, and the New York scenery. Although there are some obvious fake-looking designs, it doesn't interrupt the romantic scenes between the lead characters. The plot is unique, making it entertaining for the audience. The two lead actors wonderfully act their characters, giving them the added flavor that the audience won't forget. Besides them, some actors were overreacted, causing annoying interruption to the plot listening. Those who love romantic comedies should watch "Down With Love". Though a possibility of mixed reactions, everyone will be entertained.
Rating: Summary: Fun homage Review: Very cute throwback to the 60s pillow romantic comedies. The design is a delight (costumes, sets, effects, body language, pacing) -- all a wonderful homage. A fun Saturday-night-curl-up-on-the-couch-with-the-popcorn (and ok for the parents and grandparents!) sort of movie. Do not overthink or over-analyze this one -- it's meant as eye- and mind-candy. Enjoy.
Rating: Summary: Lover Come Back? Review: I'm not sure I would describe this as a "spot-on riff/goof" of the Day/Hudson flims. I'm more compelled to describe it as a borderline "rip-off" of "Lover Come Back" or "Pillow Talk." There are too many similarities without any recognition of these classic romantic comedies. The only real homage paid to the Day/Hudson films is a couple cameos of Tony Randall as the "big boss." Maybe I'm just a movie snob, but I wish people would realize that these characters are almost identical to characters from the past. Anyway, don't get me wrong, it's a very entertaining movie--not boring at all as many have reported. Definitely worth seeing. If you like it, check out the classics section for "Pillow Talk" and "Lover Come Back."
Rating: Summary: 5 points for the design Review: Utterly silly, and almost utterly pointless, slightly redeemed only by the design work, which should get an Oscar nomination. This could be funny as a 10 minute Saturday Night Live sketch, but it goes on and on and on... The sex jokes are un-funny and tasteless, and the whole thing is stylized to the point of lunacy and so camp I didn't believe in the "reality" of the characters for a moment. The script probably read well, but comes across as so cutesy on the screen it made my teeth hurt. As some reviewer suggested, this is as frothy as a musical but without the song and dance numbers -- and it could use some.
Rating: Summary: Sex and the Single Girl Review: Did you ever see that movie? It was made in 1964 (or around) with Natalie Wood & Tony Curtis... It's very similar to this movie & i'm surprised that no one has compared it to this film. I think it's more similar than the Doris Day Movies. Both "Down With Love" & "Sex" are good movies... Check them both out. You can get "Sex and the Single Girl" on VHS.
Rating: Summary: A pleasant diversion Review: With this tribute to those classy Doris Day - Rock Hudson films of the sixties, you get super -suave(also super-hot)ladies man Catcher Block, played by remarkable shapeshifter, Ewan McGregor. and Cute little Renee Zellwegger, donning cute little sixties outfits. Barbara Novak(Zellwegger) is no Doris Day, however.Doris; always attractive, and somewhat ambitious, was always wholesome. Barbara Novak is a Down with Love girl. Trying to climb her way to the top of the work-world ladder, by saying "Down with Love!" This all changes however when she meets Catcher, who ladies man that he is, much like Rock Hudson in Pillow Talk, takes on a phony name, and Texan accent to try to woo Novak, so she'll admit she's just like any other woman;she wants love and marriage. But no one can foresee the goofy plot turns here. The neo-60's outfits, and even the way zellwegger, and her fellow down with love girls walk is enough to make this funny little film watchable. So definately see this if you are a McGregor/Zellwegger fan or just a fan of imitation 60's, slightly cheesy(in a good way) romantic comedies.
Rating: Summary: BOOOORRRIIINGGG...and Bad Review: This is one of the worst movies I've seen in a long time. No other review is needed other than that. Don't waste your $ or two hours on Down with Love.
Rating: Summary: Down With Forced Campy Acting Review: Great costumes and art direction. Horrible acting that seemed forced, fake, and trying much too hard to be campy. In one word: terrible. Zellweger and McGregor are both strong actors BUT someone steered them in the wrong direction for this film. Here lies the problem: campy performances cannot be calculated. They just happen. I don't remember Doris or Rock's acting ever being this down right bad.
Rating: Summary: Renee & Ewan Rock!! (and Doris) Review: "Down With Love" is a clever, colorful, homage to the great Doris Day/Rock Hudson films of the 60s, with its tongue planted firmly in its cheek. What's most impressive about the film (besides its splendid Technicolor costumes and art direction and Mark Shaiman's pitch-perfect score) is its staying power. I kept waiting for it to run out of steam, but it never did. And everyone in the film seems to be having a tremendous amount of fun -- and not at the expense of the audience. I rented "Down With Love" but I'm definitely going to buy it for future viewing on nights when I just want to sit back, relax and have a good time.
Rating: Summary: What a waste of money Review: I haven't seen a film worse than this since "Drop Dead Gorgeous". The context was out and the story boring! 20 minutes in and i was bored! Perhaps the only good thing about it was the costumes!
