Summary: Not a far cry from Antoine Doinel
Review: Okay, so there are several fundamental differences between Antoine Doinel (The 400 Blows) and Rushmore's Max Fischer. Max is not French. He does not get sent to a work camp for juvenile offenders (though he spends a short time in jail). He lives with a loving father. And where Antoine is helpless in a world run by hapless adults, Max is a precocious youth who has firmly established himself in, at least some aspects, the adult world.

On the other hand there are several very salient affinities between the two. They are both brilliantly intelligent and creative. They are both misunderstood and at odds with "the establishment". They are both vital and active children who search for something to live for. And they both look to the adult world to answer their innermost yearnings, and come back disappointed and rejected.

Rushmore, like The 400 Blows, has a magic quality to it. Whether it is the catchy soundtrack; the rebelliouly charming, somewhat anachronistic 60's quality of Max; the quaint, quiet, enlightened, and tolerant town of Rushmore; or the wonderful supporting characters like Mr. Littlejeans, Dirk, Margaret Yang, and Max's haircutting father--the film conveys a real sense of the subtle, understated beauty hidden amid all of the irritation, brilliance, and activity that exudes from the film.

In short, this is an indispensably good film. Watch it, love it, and thank me later.

Summary: You, You're Out!
Review: I had never heard of Anderson movies until I saw the preview for RUSHMORE, and I HAD to see it and Bottle Rocket. This movie was so unique, intelligent, and funny that I fell in love with it instantly. It was a sort of Neo-New Wave piece of cinema that I hadn't seen in movies for a while. The soundtrack flowed with the lyrical storytelling and complimented it instead of being a catchy platform to sell artists. I bought the first DVD three days before I learned the Criterion Collection DVD version was being released and I was furious that I will have to buy both versions now since I would have bought the Criterion if I had known. I have shown this movie to all my friends and it has become a cult following and growing. Well that's it, tag'em and bag'em, Jerries,we're moving out. P.S. I can't wait for Anderson's next piece of genius!

Summary: Most Beautiful Film of the Decade
Review: I watch hundreds of movies at school (film major) so I don't take the above words lightly. Rushmore is one of the most pure and honest films I've ever seen. Sure it is easy to make fun of those teenage years or look back with blind nostalgia, but how many filmmakers do you know can make something beautiful? If you are worn out by the overly cynical view of the 90s and if somewhere you have a heart, this film will restore your faith in life.

Review: What in the world is wrong with these people who are giving this dull ..sloppy... endless.. .slooooowwww stinker of a movie five stars! I thought that I would be able to trust criticism from everyday people instead of overpaid movie critics, but boy was I wrong this time! Those reviews fooled me into renting this movie, and I couldn't begin to tell how disappointed I was! First of all, what was so funny about Rushmore? My medical books were funnier than this! I was more annoyed by Schwartzman's character than anything! It was great to see Murray again, but even he looked bored throughout this one! I was begging for Murray AND his twin sons to have more screen time here and save this sinking ship, but it never happened! And how about that ridiculous ending? Schwartzman made almost everybody in town peeved, but everything was cool just by inviting them to a play! I know..I know.. " there is a deep and meaningful message behind this"... and .. " You must read between the lines and bring out your inner child....blah blah".. If I want a message, I would check my e-mail! But those of you who want entertainment and a chuckle or two, CHECK OUT "ELECTION"! Schwartzman's Max has nothing on Reese Witherspoon's Tracy Flick!

Summary: Criterion has done it again !
Review: First of all, Rushmore as a movie is spectacular. This is one that no one should miss. It's filled with drama, laughs, friendship, confrontation and much, much more. Ever since I saw the trailer for Rushmore back when it was first released, I wanted to see it. When I did, I was thrilled. It's just such a wonderful film.

Ok, now onto the DVD. I would like to say that I own 71 DVD's (including the Criterion Rushmore). I have no reservations in saying that this is the finest DVD in my collection. If every DVD is done this well, the world would be a much better place. This DVD has more 'special features' than 10 other DVDs put together. Also, the picture is beautiful (16x9 enhanced) and the sound is spectacular. You just can't possibly pack more goodies onto a DVD. It can't be possible. I have never seen such a wonderful job on a title before.

I take my hat off to Criterion for this disc. They have outdone themselves this time. Plus, there couldn't be a better movie to accompany such a fine job.

If you are a fan of the film, do yourself a favor and GET THIS DVD. Don't settle for the regular version; you'll be kicking yourself for a long time.

Summary: This is the collection to own/if only I were 15 again
Review: It goes without saying that this film is a classic. But I was pleasantly surprised with how enjoyable, and complete this Criterion Collection is. The audio commentary was great, Anderson & Wilson provide moving and personal comments about the inspiration behind the story, and they share all of the film/books they "borrowed from" to bring us the storybook quality of the film. Schwartzman also chimes in with witty insite on how nervous he was, and how painful waxing ones chest is. Other great additions are the "never used" "Max Fisher Players" shorts for MTV, early casting films, photos, a quaintly humourous documentary on the "making of". Down to the charming "childlike" coverart, and "schoolhouse" menu screens, this package encapulates the feeling of Max's world, which is where I'd like be most of the time...This is the reason I got a dvd player.

Summary: A Great One
Review: One of the most enjoyable movies I have ever seen, and one of the ten best movies of the 1990's. This movie was, sadly, overlooked at the box office. This is most likely due to the fact that the main character is an antihero and is not a completely likable character. In fact, there is no traditional protagonist in this movie as all characters are damaged or flawed. Yet, the happy niche in life that they find and the way they come upon and accept their niche is lovely, charming, and touching. One of the few movies I have ever bought to own at home.

Summary: Funny and above all - original
Review: There are so many dense, vaccuous movies out there dealing with high school with stereotypical characters: geeks, jocks, preps, etc. This movie ignored all of that and portrayed interesting, original characters. There are no sex starved boys or tough, black clad, chain smoking, rebelious outsiders whom we see in almost every other movie dealing with high school. What a refreshingly original film!

Summary: Funny, witty, smart comedy that'll make you snort!
Review: This is one of the funniest comedy movies of the decade! Funny, exhilirating and laugh out loud comedy make this movie a must get! Notice I'm using big movie critic words such as "exhilirating" and "laugh out loud" because it makes it sound good because it really is. But seriously, buy this movie, it simply rocks!

Summary: MAJOR DISAPOINTMENT!
Review: This movie starts out slow, continues to be slow, and then, finally, it ends slow. there is no point and it has a horrible plot line. It is a nasty movie in the sense of sexual content.
