Summary: Simply gorgeous & uplifting, but don't miss the "moral"
Review: I don't understand what so many reviewers found offensive about this film! Maybe they just missed the point.

The cinamatography is phenomenal! Simply breath-taking, but don't miss the "moral" of the story. It's so simple and yet so true and poinient! Yes, many awful things happen to Diane Lane's character, but the point of it all is that she comes out on top! She goes through the terrible relationship with her husband, the Italian... but then she spends time by herself and she finds out who SHE TRULY IS and feels GREAT about herself WITHOUT having a man, and THEN a love interest shows up at the end (although it's not implicatly said, he is her "true love"). The moral: "You can not truly love someone else until you love youself." So true, so true. And this movie did a FABULOUS job of illustrating it.

"Under the Tuscan Sun" is truly a gorgeous, feel-good, inspiring, uplifting, beautiful film! It will be a great addition to my DVD collection. :-)

Summary: Just a good trip to Italy
Review: 'Under the Tuscam Sun' can be exactly defined by this one line summary of this present review. The movie is just a good chance to make a trip to Italy while seated in front of your television and DVD set. In fact, this trip provides to the viewer good locations (especially the ones taken at the city of Positano, in South Italy), a brief look at the habits and style of life in this otherwise fascinating Mediterranean country. But that's all.The movie is just another bittersweet story of love, friendship and delusions without anything new to be taken or even a minimal original approach to such pondering themes. Many viewers will certainly find this movie amusing and lighthearted - and this is a correct mode to describe this one - but it's shallow characters and routine treatment made the final outcome just a passable but unnoticed experience. Beautifully filmed, with good locations and a fine piece of work of photography. Famous Italian director Mario Monnicelli made a cameo as the old man with the flowers.

Summary: Heart in the Right Place
Review: Review of the film, it just came out in the UK.
I came into the theatre with high hopes. I wasn't expecting
realism, I can go see a subtitled Italian film for that,
but the endless stream of cliches finally wore down my goodwill. The encounter with Marcello is too rushed and thin.
Emma Thompson does a much better scorned woman than Diane Lane.
The writing could have been much much better.
I was hoping for an Italian Amelie, but left severely
disappointed.

Summary: Horrible Movie!!!
Review: I absolutely HATED this movie. It was SUCH a waste of my time. The first ten minutes made the movie seem worth watching, but then the storyline, along with my desire to watch it, fell dramatically after that. It was not worth my time! I couldn't wait for the credits to come. I found myself fast forwarding through parts, just to get through it quicker. The main character, Diane Lane, annoyed me. Plus, the storyline was depressing. Nothing ever went right in her life. I don't see what other people see in it. I would not recommend watching this movie, unless you actually like being bored senseless.

Summary: Too many Hollywood cliches...
Review: The only reason I rented this was because Diane Lane is in it. She does a great job with what she's given, but...that's not a lot. She pulls off the same pained, chiseled expressions that she did in Unfaithful and also exudes the same sort of sexiness. The sad part about this movie is that it, I'm presuming, is supposed to be about a woman escaping a superficial world of betrayal and heartache to romantic, breath-taking Italy to begin a new life with new possibilities. Instead her move to Tuscany is filled with frustrating ironies...such as the only worthwhile Italian guy being married...to her mindless jump into the bed of an Italian playboy (and subsequent tears because he has decided to move on)...etc etc etc. So many of the attempts at depth and humor are too superficial or downright cheesy to be believed. The absurd ending is without a doubt the worst part. There is plenty of political correctness to go around...(this whole thing starts with a "gay tour" of Tuscany)...

Summary: Are These People Serious?
Review: Ok. Seriously folks. This movie is about as good as water if you are looking for wine. The idea of the movie is ok, however, the director is either an idiot or that was her target audience. Some parts are ok, but most parts are so laughably unbelievable or hollywoodized that it turns out to be laughable. I don't want to waste any more of my time writing a detailed review of a movie that I could barely watch (it was my wife's birthday, I had to -- and even she hated it). So, for all of you saying something about wanting to know what was so bad about this film, I'll give you one thing:

You know all those glorified love scenes in classic movies where a VIABLE couple finally meets, and their first kiss on the beach lasts from day until night! Yeah, well,... no.

If this movie is on a plane, I would recommend listening to the conversation in the cockpit or thumb wrestling with the toddler who is kicking your chair. Diane Lane is OK, the group that does the renovations provided SOME comic relief (on purpose) but all the rest of the cast should he hanged for their involvement.

Summary: Hello heartache!
Review: I just rented this movie and loved it!!!

Now please keep in mind that I had a day off work, much wine, a whole afternoon away from my husband - so I would have to vote this pic as a chick flick....

On second thought, many men might benefit from the harsh emotions associated with divorce and heart felt love displayed through the female lead.

Regardless, this move makes you weep and makes you laugh - what else could you ask for on a day off?

Summary: Escape to Tuscany
Review: Dianne Lane is wonderful as are all the cast members in the warm, touching, inspiring movie. This movie is more complex and unpredicatable than the trailer would lead you to believe. I've watched three times and I've only had it a month. The director's comments about the making of the movie are interesting and really make me want to escape to Tuscany.

Summary: Diane Lane is great but skip this movie
Review: Diane Lane is the only redeemable part to this lame effort.

The film takes tremendous liberties with the plot from the book. Way way too much PC madness.

A waste of time and money.

Summary: Beautiful and heart warming
Review: I saw this film last night, and I must say, it is one of my favourite films of 2004 already!
It's a REAL girlie film (I am NOT a girl), but I still adored it.
Diane Lanes character is going through a divorce, and is given a trip to Tuscany by her good friends, to help her get over the split.
When she gets to Tuscany, she is immediately taken by the beauty of Italy.
She reads the 'signs' early on, and on an impulse buys a Tuscan villa, which is in dire need of renovation.
The rest of the story concentrates on her rebuilding her life, the people she meets, and the difficulties that that presents especially in a foreign country.
This is a real feel-good film, and I loved the strength the character displayed.
The film offered no surprises, you know exactly what will happen throughout, but sometimes, that's exactly the kind of film you need!
A wonderful, heart warming, inspirational, touching and genuinely lovely film.
(And it was a real reminder to go back to Italy soon - the filming of the scenery was stunning)

The DVD extras?
Adequate; 3 deleted scenes which are always nice, and a nice documentary.
HOWEVER - I found a hidden extra - and a REALLY good one it is too!
Clue - its hidden on the special features page, and its a very interesting film on the making of 'Zeus' underpants (he was originally naked and they had to add pants to lower the rating - interesting!)
