Summary: Outstanding 'Chick Flick'
Review: This is simply one of the best examples ever of a genre I like to call "kissy-face," nothing negative implied!

There comes a time when you just want to see a film where there is no violence, no blood, no horror, no significant meaning--just pure, decadent entertainment. That's what "Under the Tuscan Sun" is like--a wonderful box of chocolates where every chocolate is your favorite flavor. Some call this genre "chick flicks"--so be it.

The story is pure, simple fluff, and not even original at that. Diane Lane (perfect in the role) plays a scorned woman, not too young, but far from old, who purchases a broken-down villa in Tuscany, Italy, on pure whim. Does it make sense? No! Is it perfectly believable? Yes! As she sets out to save the villa from utter ruin and turn it into a liveable residence, she finds herself involved with a crazy group of Polish emigrants, who not only speak poor English, but poor Italian as well. They have been hired to remodel the villa.

Then there's a crazy but fabulous real estate woman who fancies herself a character in a Fellini movie--and then some. Our heroine has definitely bitten off more than she can chew, but at least she doesn't have much time to think of the cad back home who dumped her. So does she find true love and live happily ever after? I won't tell you, but the lush, gorgeous, breathtaking panorama of Tuscany is worth the price of the movie no matter what the plot--and the plot is just icing on the cake.

It isn't "smart," it isn't intellectual, it doesn't have much of a plot, it makes no sense at all--but "Under the Tuscan Sun" is just perfect.

Summary: A guy's persective - actually a GREAT movie!
Review: As a guy I was not sure if I would enjoy this film or not. It had Diane Lane in it who I like alot. It had good reviews in the newspapers and magazines. But it also didn't really appeal as subject matter AND I had never read the book either. Having said all of that - I did really enjoy this film. It is funny and enjoyable and has a pleasant, uplifting tone to it. Diane Lane was sexy and again gave a great performance like last years 'Unfaithful' for which she was Oscar nominated. The supporting characters in the movie were very entertaining and the Tuscan hills looked spectacular. This is a very good movie that I would recommend even to other guys. Give it a try.

Summary: Best film this year!
Review: Under the Tuscan Sun is the best film I have seen in a long time. It warmed my heart and made me laugh. It made me want to move to Tuscany. Diane Lane was wonderful.

Summary: Big Surprise!
Review: Next to "Lost In Translation," "Finding Nemo," and "Seabiscuit," this would be one of the best movies so far this year. Everything about this movie was beautiful: the plot; the characters; the scenery; the music. Everything! Beautiful!

First off (for all you Oscar-Watch people out there), Diane Lane is this movie's best chance for an Oscar nom. She was wonderful. The greatest thing about her performance as Frances in this film is that she is so real. Although the situation seems surreal, everything about her just keeps you cheering for her to find the right guy and rebuild the house and to have a perfect life. Not many actors can absorb you into the film alone, but she did it. If the person playing her character was someone else, I can gaurentee you, this film would not be as believable (despite it's being based upon a true story).

The synopsis, as I said, is surreal. A San Francisco English professor is divorced by her husband and she becomes depressed. Her lesbian friends signed up for a gay tour of Tuscany, couldn't go, and let her go (the importance of it being a gay tour is that she will not get hit on, because it's mostly couples). There, she finds a villa and decides to buy it, and move to Italy, where she meets an entire cast of ecclectic individuals, including a force of Polish contractors. Crazy enough, right? Not at all, when you see the movie.

The scenery is probably the most prominent part of the film. Just everything, EVERYTHING is so spectacular. I, myself, have been to Italy, and I can tell you that it is hard to find the excact picturesque views for this film the way the cinematographers and director did. It must have been luck or great timing. But every little thing about Tuscany just makes you smile. Come see this movie just for that, if the rest does not interest you.

The only disclaimer I have is that there are some cliches in this movie. Such as a storm that nearly destroys her home. But what makes it so cliche is that it is there for comic relief. However, it does make you laugh, no problem there. There are other minor cliches that are sprinkled throughout the film, but nothing as major as some critics say. But otherwise, I recommend this movie to everyone!

Bottom Line: The most beautiful film so far this year, as well as the funniest and the best feel-good movie of the year. (I give it an A)

Summary: A Breath of Fresh Air
Review: From heartbreak and depression to effervescence and exultation, Under the Tuscan Sun will take you on a dreamy tour of Italy's landscape, food, people and music. Diane Lane delivers an Oscar worthy performance as she portrays Frances Mayes' Italian adventure.

Having lived in Italy for two years, this movie brought back to me so many wonderful memories and made me yearn to go back to Italy for a visit. The cinematography is remarkable and the subtleties of the little Italian villages' charms are captured ever so vividly. This is truly a breath of fresh air and I totally recommend it to all of you out there; definitely an Oscar material!
