Summary: My Review of "What about Bob?"
Review: My Review of
What About Bob?

I rate this comedy a 5, simply because I don't get tired of watching it and I always laugh at the one liners, which have become some of my one liners.

What About Bob? was released by Touchtone Pictures in 1991, directed by Frank Oz and the duration of the movie is 99 minutes.

Some of the main characters are as follows: Bill Murray portrays an ultra obsessive phobic patient by the name of Bob Wiley, Richard Dreyfuss, plays a psychiatrist by the name of Leo Marvin, M.D., Julie Hagerty plays the dutiful and just doctor's wife as Fay Marvin, Charlie Korsmo played the son of Dr. & Mrs. Marvin as 'Siggy' and Kathryn Erbe played the daughter Anna. Fran Brill plays the doctor's sister, Lily Marvin.

The opening scene begins in a big city when a former colleague calls Leo Marvin to request if Dr. Marvin would accept a new patient, a patient of his by the name of Bob Wiley. During Bob Wiley's initial evaluation, Dr. Marvin listens to Bob rule out all of the mental diagnosis that his couldn't be, and Dr. Marvin prescribes a book, his newly released book, "Baby Steps," to read for therapy. All was going well up until Dr. Marvin mentions that he'll see Bob in a month after he and his family return from vacation. The next setting is when the doctor and his family vacation at Lake Winnepisaqi and the obsessed patient, Bob Wiley, soon pursues his much needed counsel and shrink, Leo Marvin.

The theme of the movie, in my opinion, is to not sweat the small stuff and to take the big stuff in small steps, or another way to say this is, if you strive to overcome your obstacles by overcoming even larger obstacles then your own obstacles will resolve or diminish in magnitude along the way.

What About Bob's plot involves Dr. Leo Marvin who prescribed to Bob Wiley, a newly seen patient, a treatment to follow until he could see his patient again, which would be following a family vacation. The doctor's treatment was to read "Baby Steps" a novel written by himself. Bob's overwhelming fear of the doctor going away for a whole month catapulted Bob into overcoming his phobias by tracking down and finding his doctor where he was vacationing. Ironically, the patient winds up healing himself by becoming acquainted and involved with the doctor's family and eventually faces all of his fears while the doctor obsesses about an interview with "Good Morning America." The twist of the plot is that the doctor becomes a deranged man by trying to keep the patient out of his life and after many attempts to do so, it backfires, which eventually puts Dr. Marvin in a catatonic state. The doctor completely recovers and comes back to life after the minister asked, "if there was anyone who wished to object to this union" and "you are now man and wife" at Bob and Lily's wedding.

Summary: "Laugh Therapy"
Review: WHAT ABOUT BOB is one of the funniest (and most underrated) comedies ever and one of my favourite movies. The master of craziness Bill Murray has one of his best roles as the neurotic Bob Wiley, who seeks help from renowned psychiatrist Dr Leo Marvin (Richard Dreyfuss). As Leo's patient, Bob follows him to his holiday house at Lake Winnapisokee, where the crazy Bob pesters his exasperated Doc for answers to his problems. Directed with aplomb by Frank "Yoda" Oz, the witty back-and-forth and gradually increasing craziness between Dreyfuss and Murray is fantastic, with an outstanding script and superb comedic timing. It's also one of the few comedies that stands to repeat viewings to catch the numerous gags.
The film also stars Julie Hagerty (Airplane) as Leo's wife and Charlie Korsmo (from Steven Spielberg's Hook) as Sigmund 'Siggy' Marvin. But this movie belongs to Murray. Only betterd by his brilliant Phil Conners in GROUNDHOG DAY, his neuroticism provides some great laughs ("I want, I want, gimme, gimme, gimme, I need I need!"). Which is exactly what people are saying about this DVD. Must-have comedy.

Summary: A comedy classic
Review: "What About Bob?" is a rare film indeed. A comedy that you just don't get tired of. One that 13 years after it's initial release, has lost none of it's joyusly demented charm.

Unlike what a few of the previous reviews have said...Bill Murray & Richard Dreyfus work wonderfully together. The storyline is simple: Murray is Bob Wiley. A sweet man, who is afraid of just about everything. and Dreyfus is his new Therapist, Dr Leo Marvin. Bob ends up tracking his Dr and his family to their vacation home, and proceeds to invade their life in every way imaginable. Bill Murray plays Bob with a sense of complete joy and abandon, and it's obvious that it's a role only he could have done.

My only complaint, is that for the DVD release, there is zero special features. it would have been nice to see behind the scenes footage, or possbly some kind of commentary...but the movie still stands alone as a one of the funniest ever made.

Summary: A Comedy Classic, One I'll Be Watching With My Kids!
Review: If you haven't been turned onto the genius that is Bill Murray then you:

a. have very horrible parents

b. haven't a funny bone in your entire body

c. lack an eternal soul!

Ok, that might be just a bit dramatic but I have to give credit where credit is due. In the early 80's (when I was just a tot) my Mom started letting me watch Saturday Night Live and I particularly liked the skits that included Bill Murray. One of the funniest comedians to ever live, Murray pulls out all the stops in this movie, giving one of the best performances of his life. In this hilarious film about an obsessive compulsive and his relationship with his short-tempered therapist the laughs never stop coming. When the therapist (played by Richard Dreyfuss) takes his family on vacation his most needy patient, Bob(Murray) decides he can't live without his therapy sessions and follows the family. Antics ensue that, although I can pretty much quote them by heart, still put me in stitches everytime I watch. There isn't much in this movie that should keep parents from letting kids watch(some language that's it). If you are a comedy fan and you haven't seen this movie well then you have been lying to yourself. For a supposed comedy fan to have not seen this movie, well there's just no excuse. Bill Murray is always worth the price of admission if you need a good laugh. Although sometimes he doesn't leave much room between for those essential breaths of air. One of the best and most memorable movies of the 1990's. This is one movie I'll definitely be watching with my kids! Go Watch It Now!

Summary: Who's the neurotic?
Review: Bob, played by Bill Murray, is polyphobic (many intense fears) or even panphobic (fears everything). He seeks out the help of a famous and successful psychiatrist, Richard Dreyfuss, who begins to help him. But, Dreyfuss wants to go on vacation with his family, but the thought of losing contact with Dreyfuss terrifies Bob. Solution: follow the psychiatrist on vacation and become the ultimate unwanted houseguest. Dreyfuss tries to get Bob to leave, but Dreyfuss's family likes Bob. Dreyfuss gets no vacation, and goes bananas.

This is not a predictable story, although some of the twists are predictable. Dreyfuss ends up appearing just as disturbed as Murray, but in a much less pleasant/friendly way. This film packs lots of laughs, but is not as funny when re-watched.

Summary: Can't give it away
Review: I've watched the movie 2 times, and I don't know why, but I found this movie not funny at all. I laughed not once. I smiled not once. There were no "one liners" that seemed humorous. Weak story. I tried to sell it cheap, but I could not. Need I say more?

Summary: I FIND THIS MOVIE SO UNFUNNY.
Review: I KNOW ALL ABOUT THE POSSITIVE REVIEWS THIS PICTURE GOT, BUT I CAN NOT STAND IT. IT'S SLOW, TEDIOUS, AND THERE IS ABSOLUTELY NO CHEMISTRY AT ALL BETWEEN MURRAY AND RICHARD DREFUSS. I WAS ALSO SURPRISED TO LEARN THAT FRANK OZ DIRECTED THIS MOVIE, I THINK HE SHOULD STAY WITH BEING A VOICE ACTOR.

Summary: There are two kinds of people in this world
Review: ...those who like this movie and those who don't. I happen to like this movie!
What About Bob? is a film directed by Frank Oz (the man who gave the voice of the Cookie Monster, Grover and Bert from Sesame Street), and starring Bill Murray (Ghostbusters, Groundhog Day) and Richard Dreyfuss (The Goodbye Girl, Tin Men). The film is a laugh-out-loud comedy about a psychiatrist's worst nightmare; a mental patient that just won't go away!
Bill Murray remarkably plays the annoying yet very nice and gentle Bob Wiley, a man suffering from a personality disorder, who is refered to Dr. Leo Marvin, played by Dreyfuss, by his previous doctors who just couldn't handle him anymore. Bob is more than just a patient, he is the kind of guy who doesn't acknowledge the personal and private lives of his doctors and therefore sticks to them like 'crazy glue' and just won't go away! Dr Marvin is in for a big and unpleasant surprise after his first and last session with Bob right before he is to embark on a one month vacation with his family in Lake Winnipesaukee, New Hampshire. Bob follows him there and that's when the funniest doctor-patient relationship/fued begins.
Murray gives a very funny performance in this one, getting on your nerves in most of the scenes he is in but in the meantime, causing the laughs to break out. However, the funniest thing about this movie is watching Dr Marvin slowly but surely being driven over the edge and then breaking out mad!
