Rating: Summary: Why, O Why, Did I see a Movie Like This? Review: There's only one reason why I give this movie two stars: the acting was good. My friends and I were laughing at this flick the whole time. The moral message is extremely offensive - there is even incest between two of the characters - and the screenplay suffers from one major flaw: it bores the viewer to death.
Rating: Summary: Wes Anderson delivers again! Review: After 'Bottle Rocket' and 'Rushmore' you would think Wes Anderson was due for a bomb. His third movie, 'The Royal Tenebaums' proves the odds' makers wrong! Beautiful cinematography, strong writing, and incredible acting (especially Gene Hackman) make for one of the top movies of 2001!
Rating: Summary: the mice were even better in Babe Review: Someone here said that the mice were the comic highlight of the movie. I could agree with him on that. However, there were much better mice actors in Babe. And if I wanted a movie with humor so dry and inane to make me laugh, I'd go watch Babe a hundred times over the Royal Tennenbores. Dry wit, they say? It seemed more like Owen Wilson and Wes Anderson were like high school nerds snickering all to themselves because they shared a joke that no one else could get.
Rating: Summary: This Movie is Amazing. Review: This is truely one of the all time great black comedies. Even though it hasn't stood the test of time it became classic to me after my first viewing. The story is about Royal Tenebaums (Gene Hackman), the con artist who has come to live back at his ex-wife's house pretending to have stomach cancer. All the Tenebaum children, child success stories turned adult failures, also happen to move back home. The story, soundtrack, directing, acting...everything about this movie is great. Wes Anderson, director, creates these great quirky little worlds that make perfet sense in a weird little way. Similar to Rushmore with a stronger group of characters. In any case a must have.
Rating: Summary: Excellant Movie! Review: When I oringally saw the trailer for this movie I did not know who Wes Anderson(the director) was.It looked really boring. So then a few movies later I saw anthor trailer and my autiude towards it changed. The reason is because I learned about Rushmore and how good it was.Same with Bottle Rocket. Then I saw the cast.Gene Hackmen(The Replacemnets,The Posiden Adventure,Hoosiers, and Heartbreakers)Angelica Huston(The Witches),Ben Stiller(Meet the Parents,Zoolander,Keeping the Faith)Gwen Palthrow(Bounce,Shallow Hal)Owen Wilson(Armeggenon,Shangi Noon,Meet the Parents),Danny Glover(Antz,Lethal Weapon 1-4)Bill Murrey(Larger Then Life,Rushmore,Caddyshack)Semyor Cassel(Rushmore),and Luke Wilson(Bottle Rocket,Rushmore, and the upcoming The Third Wheel, and Old School)I knew that it would be the best.I did see it and I saw it twice.I enjoyed everything about it. The Story:Royal Tenenbaum(Gene Hackmen)and his wife Etheline Tenenbaum(Angelic Huston) bought the house on 111 Archer Avenue and had three children before they sperated.Chas Tenenbaum(Ben Stiller)was a bunisskid who understood everything about the value of a dollar.Margot Tenenbaum(Gwen Palthrow)was a playwright and won the Poultzter Prize in the 9th Grade. Her first play was preformed on her 11th birthday the last time she ever saw or spoke to Royal.Richie Tenenbaum(Luke Wilson)was a tennie champ and went pro at 17 years of age.He ran away with Margot one winter and has loved her ever since. She was adopted at age 2 so it's "not wrong really."He has a friend who lives with his aunt in a two room apartment. His name is Eli Cash(Owen Wilson).27 years later Chas married a women named Racheal and had too sons named Ari(Grant Rosenmeyer) and Ozi(Johan Meyerson). They had a dog named Buckly.Rachel died in a car crash the summer before the story starts.Ever since Chas has been abessed with safty.Margot has married a man named Desmond and divorced after nine days.Later she married the writer Raleign St.Clair(Bill Murrey)who does experements on a child named Dudley.Margot is having an affair with Eli who has become a writer and a cowboy.Richie quit tennis and has been trying to get rid of his love for Margot by riding on an oceanliner.Etheline has become an arceologist and has become an item with her accountent and bridge partner Henry Sherman.Henry asks Etheline to marry him and she thinks about it.Royal has been living in the Lindberg Palace Hotel for 27 years. He is still a cheat but is broke and is still in love with his ex.He fakes stomach cancer so he could woo her over and get a place to live with his friend and ex housekeeper Pagoda(Kumar Pallena). His other only friend is Dusty(Semyor Cassel)who is an elevator operator at the hotel. Now all the Tenenbaum children are under one roof in this dark comendy directed by the genius Wes Anderson. The Score:Mark Mothersburgh composed a great score for The Royal Tenenbaums.Score Selection are 111 Archie Avenue,Lindberg Palce Hotel Suite,Look at That Old Grizzly Bears,Mothersburgh Cannon,Scrapping and Yelling,Pagoda's Theme,I Always Wanted to be a Tenenbaum,Racheal Evens Tenenbaum(1965-2000),and Sparkplug Minute. The Writer:Owen Wilson continued to help Wes Anderson write the script to The Royal Tenenbaums. The Narractor:The narractor is never really the main part of a film but without one here the story of the Tenenbaum children cannot not be told so I put a special section for Alec Baldwin(Beetlejuice,Pearl Harbor, and an episode of Friends entitled The One with the Tea Leaves)for narracting The Royal Tenenbaums. Well that is what this great movie is about.Sure it is sad at a few moments but too funny. Thanks for taking the time to read this reveiw and go see the Oscar nominated movie(Best Oringal Screenplay)The Royal Tenenbaums. Now playing in select theatres... ENJOY!!! Stay Tuned for my next reveiw Death to Smoochy.
Rating: Summary: DYSFUNCTIONAL TENENBAUMS WORTH SEEING ... ONCE Review: Not especially a Wes Anderson devotee, I was still glad to have seen THE ROYAL TENENBAUMS in the disjointed machinations produced in undulating space and time by writer-director Anderson; collaborating on this work with his cowriter and actor Owen Wilson. The acting skills of some of my favorite, most accomplished actors must have been tested to their limits: Gene Hackman as Royal Tenenbaum, plays the virtuoso con man and absentee patriarch of a family of geniuses. As the story opens, Royal had been gone for several years when he suddenly appears in a desperate attempt to get his family back. Gwyneth Paltrow utterly transforms herself into the secretive, precocious playwright Margot (no one knew she was a smoker for 20 years); Luke Wilson the melted down tennis pro Richie; and Ben Stiller as Chas the boy financial wizard and grownup grieving widower obsessed with his children's safety (co-starring with Robert De Niro, Stiller tickled our funny bones with "Meet The Parents"); Anjelica Huston, playing the detached mother Etheline who sacrifices herself to educate her brood of geniuses; and Danny Glover who used to be Royal's accountant, but during his long absence the accountant fell in love with Etheline as he crunched her numbers. I wondered how these actors could sustain their characters in this movie that must have been produced with an egg beater. But wonder of wonders, they pulled it off. The writing was terrific, with each succeeding line outdoing the one before it. The movie was indeed entertaining ... but a little exhausting. Although I enjoyed seeing it once, it is doubtlful that I'll see it again. It was sort of like witnessing a car crash. How many times can you sit through the same car crash? Which reminds me, near the end of the film there is a car crash scene which is an absolute howl. Visit the TENENBAUMS, at least once.
Rating: Summary: A response to complete foolishness and elitism Review: ...Of course TRTB was not a perfect film, what is nowadays? However, it was beautifully acted all around, well filmed, not to mention possessing some great writing that deftly balanced some very intelligent with scenes that portrayed the tragedy of life.
Rating: Summary: Wes Anderson is my God Review: This movie was absolutely the best movie of the year. People that said this movie was "the worst movie I've seen" should stick to watching Dr. Dolittle or Julia Roberts/Sandra Bullock movies. If you don't like to analyze, this movie isn't for you. If you appreciate a movie that is deep, dark, and hyterically funny, then please go see this. I have seen it 4 times and it gets better every time. Gene Hackman will make you laugh everytime he opens his mouth. I also strongly recommend the soundtrack and Rushmore. Wes Anderson, I bow to you yet again.
Rating: Summary: I would just like to start by saying... Review: ...that I intentionally try not to be pompous and pretentious in my day to day activities. That said, my review will not be nearly as cutting as many of the scalding criticisms of The Royal Tenenbaums that have been posted thus far. It is true that the film is a "comedy" of sorts, but as with Rushmore and Bottle Rocket (Wes Anderson's previous two collaborations with Owen Wilson) one should not expect the usual easy sight gags or gross out jokes of the typical comedy film. What Anderson does deliver consistently is a group of characters that all have quirks that keep them from being accepted into mainstream society. In the beginning of The Royal Tenenbaums, there is a flood of information on all of the characters in the movie. I would say that for the first half hour or so, I was just trying to get my grip on them. Yes, one character does have a wooden finger, but it is tied to a story that grounds the character in a very human way. To pick on such a detail and insist that it is "frat boy humor", is to ignore the broader context of the film. These are not the usual characters. And for emotional weight, I would love to see Audrey Tautou pull off a scene as subtle the one where Angelica Houston admits to Danny Glover that she has not been with a man for many years. For sheer honesty and acceptance, look no further than Wes Anderson. On top of that, there really are laughs here. Gene Hackman go-cart racing with his two track suit wearing grandsons? Owen Wilson casually announcing that he is high on mescaline when first meeting his old friend (played by brother Luke)? Please, if you have ever felt a little bit on the perimeter of society, give this movie a chance.
Rating: Summary: EVENLY DEPRESSING Review: BEING QUITE A FAN OF RUSHMORE I COULD NOT WAIT FOR THIS. I WENT TO SEE IT THE WEEKEND IT OPENED IN THE LOCAL THEATER.
