Rating: Summary: Criterion Critcism Review: I'm sure most people have made up their minds about this movie already. I love Wes Anderson and all his movies, including this one, he is the next Martin Scorese, blah blah blah blah...I'll instead comment on the bonus DVD materials. The audio commentary is better than most I've heard (I actually went through the whole thing without forwarding) and the "With the Filmmaker" segment was pretty good too. The Peter Bradley Show ...[is] so [bad] I'm pretty sure a half-brained chimp could have done better as the host. (At least it would be somewhat entertaining.) The stills and cast interview are decent as well as the detailed murals in Richie's room. Not bad Criterion, but could be better. Oh, and watch out for secret bonus materials at the mouse in the corner and the title "Criterion Collection." Enjoy :)
Rating: Summary: Please give me a pillow so I can take a nap!! Review: From moment one of this movie I was bored out of my mind. The characters have no real depth to them and the storyline is a flop with boring dialogue and characters. I had been waiting to see the movie when it came out on DVD but was dissapointed in having to turn it off 20min into it because I just couldn't take anymore. Don't knock the stars in the movie because they are just doing their job (also known as don't kill the messenger) but this script should have taken a dive in the ...from moment one. This is one that will not be joining my collection.
Rating: Summary: "I'm loving every minute with this damn crew..." Review: This film is a timeless classic about family. I don't see how people could miss these jokes, I thought this was the most comedic of Wes Anderson's films after the first time seeing it. On top of it being one of the funniest films I've ever seen, it is also has so much attention to detail. From the liscence plates, book covers, clothing, or every billboard which uses the same Futura font. The DVD's are a little disappointing, only because I was expecting alot more with 2 discs. Basically both discs could have fit on one, being that a single sided DVD can hold up to around 4 hrs of footage. Disc 2 features a half hour documentary taken from the IFC, about 20 minutes worth of interviews, 2 deleted scenes which last about 2 minutes, art stills, and a pretty funny round table discussion. The Rushmore DVD had all this on one disc, but this movie is still amazing...so I can't complain.
Rating: Summary: word of the day. Review: I am fascinated by some of the poor reviews for this movie posted on Amazon. The most interesting thing is that nearly every bad review has the word "vapid" in it...Anyway, I am a fan of Wes Anderson's work and think this is his best film to date. As for the vapid accusation...perhaps these people don't like subtle humor. I found myself laughing out loud at several occasions and am able to appreciate the dry humor that doesn't have to slap you across the face. This movie is filled with brilliant imagery, a perfectly placed soundtrack, great acting, and a wealth of emotion...
Rating: Summary: Don't waste your time! Review: This film, although from the previews looked smart, funny and interesting was quite the opposite. It bored the heck out of me and every one else who's watched it. It's not at all funny, the whole film is really monotone between the acting, the story and the actors speaking. It's really not worth checking out unless you really cant find anything better to do, wash your hair even, much better use of your time!
Rating: Summary: Amazing. Anderson's film is what every director should do! Review: Wes Anderson and Owen Wilson crafted a beautiful script which was then crafted into one of the best films of 2001. After viewing this I have now come to the conclusion that Oscar voters don't know what the hell they are doing. The Royal Tenebaums was up for ONE oscar, which it should've won(Best Orig. Screenplay)and Gene Hackman(who won the Golden Globe for Best Actor) deserved even just a nomination at the Oscars. The film is genius comedy. It perfectly shows how dyfunctional a family can be but how even a dysfunction family can come together in a time of need. I loved every minute of it and hope to see Anderson and Wilson continue on this path to film greatness, as they have now succeeded twice, with Rushmore and now Royal Tenebaums. See this film, it will enlighten all.
Rating: Summary: Sticks and Stones, Beautiful and Human Review: I am not one who usually writes reviews, but I feel that, for this movie, I must voice my opinion. I have read many reviews saying the movie lacked any emotion, was poorly acted, and wasn't funny. I would just like to say that everyone is entitled to their own opinion whether it agrees with my views or not. What gets me mad though is when a reviewer almost happily and smugly writes about how awful they thought the film was. You should be ashamed of yourselves, and have respect for those who feel as strongly about this movie as I do. The Royal Tenenbaums is a beautful movie with such a range of emotion and depth that it leaves its audience breathless. The acting was first rate! And in between crying and staring at the screen with my mouth open, I couldn't stop laughing. True, at first viewing you fail to see the complexities of the film, but after the second viewing it really hits you. I am in awe of how beautifully this story was told and what detail went into telling it. I'd just like to take this space to thank Wes Anderson for his creativity and keen eye for the beautiful and human.
Rating: Summary: The Tenenbaums Review: Those individuals giving this movie one star and saying it "wasn't funny" are simply incapable of understanding a movie at this level, and would probably be more satisified with something from the Adam Sandler collection. With that out of the way, I LOVE this movie. It's everything a movie should be. It was very funny, but in a very subtle way. The cast of this movie is perfect. As usual Bill Murray adds his usual quirkiness, Gwyneth Paltrow's performance as Margot was amazing...and of course, who could forget Pagoda, who has a spot in all of Wes Anderson's movies. The set of the movie is amazing--check out the 2nd disc by the way--it shows the making of the Tenenbaum house! This release is well worth the purchase. It comes with a bunch of extras on the second disk, as well as a map of the Tenenbaum House! Check it out, it's well worth a viewing.
Rating: Summary: Great movie, great special features Review: If you're going to buy this movie, you already have seen it and like it. I found the extra features to be entertaining and insightful. The director's commentary was interesting (usually I turn off director's commentary 10 minutes into the movie) and the interviews with the actors were great too. My favorite feature is the photo gallery. Someone ran around taking pictures during production, and many of them are funny. "Tennenbaums" is a movie with so much going on in the background, each still tells a story. The only dissapointment is that the "outtakes" are really just one outtake of Angelica Houston's hair catching fire. All in all I am very happy with my purchase, and The Royal Tennenbaums is now one of my favorite movies of all time. "The dalmation mice, well, the mice were made with sharpies. I guess I shouldn't talk about it, it's probably illegal..."
Rating: Summary: Where disc 2 is better than disc 1 Review: THE ROYAL TENENBAUMS is a movie you want to like because of the talent it contains - Angelica Huston, Gene Hackman, Gweneth Paltrow, Ben Stiller, Luke Wilson, Owen Wilson. Nice to see a widely accepted movie that is off the beaten track. But the story is ultimately boring and what can be gleaned from the script is placed in capable hands, unsuccessfully. The accompanying disc about the movie is actually more enjoyable to watch. This is just another ho-hum drab bit of Hollywood trying not to be Hollywood. And who made the decisions about the classical music worked into the sound track???
