Rating: Summary: I was a staunch disbeliever ... Review: that is until I saw this film. It may not be for everyone but for those hearts that it has captured This movie is a little gem. I was Profoundly surprised and delightly entertained by the entire story and it's characters. For once ... I actually enjoyed watching Paltrow act without a gag reflex. Hackman was amazing as always as was Huston, Glover, Stiller and The Wilson brothers. A gentle little ensemble cast. This is a must see ... take it or leave it.
Rating: Summary: hmm.. Review: I enjoyed this movie. It was amusing and fascinating for some very odd reason. ..although I think most people will find it boring and pointless. *shrug*
Rating: Summary: Nice DVD package for a great movie Review: This Criterion Collection DVD is well worth the price. The Royal Tenenbaums was my favorite movie of 2001, and I am very happy with the DVD treatment. The Royal Tenenbaums is definitely warrants repeated viewing. There is always some new detail or character nuance to catch. The careful planning of every detail and character trait is what truly makes this a great film. It has a style all its own and is a true original. There are quite a few extras on the second disc of this DVD package, including actor interviews a documentary, and plenty of photos. I only wish the documentary, directed by Albert Maysles, could have been a little longer and more in depth. It does give some nice behind the scenes footage and some insight into director Wes Anderson, though. Overall, if you like the The Royal Tenenbaums, this is a DVD worth picking up.
Rating: Summary: WHAT?!?!? Review: I rented this film due to the positive reviews I had read, and in hindsight I wish that I had not wasted my money. The humor is not subtle as some sugest, the humor is simply not there. I did enjoy how some of the scenes were filmed and also the odd, yet creative, use of the soundtrack. Unfortunately, the plot was not interesting unless you come from a family of trendily eccentric people. The characters were horrible and I did not care what happened to any of them. I saw Rushmore and thought that it had some genuinely funny scenes, but this film does not. I would not suggest this film to anyone but die hard fans of Anderson and cheesy people who think that liking this kind of film will put them on a pedestal above the average movie buff.
Rating: Summary: a Royal Mess Review: a Film that takes on a Dysfunctinal Family wow what a Great Concept? not!! this Film trys to hard to appeal to everybody or ever twisted concept&loses all of it's matter rather early. No Chemistry whatsoever here to me&the Film just goes on&On&Never seems to come to any actual meaning to me.a ROyal Mess is a better name to me.
Rating: Summary: ZZZZZZZZ Oh Sorry BORING Review: It's been a while since I've seen a movie so boring I've actually fallen asleep in parts but if your looking for a good sleep aid, you should definately check this little film out. The previews make it out to be a hillarious comedy, it is nothing of the sort, there's really no humor in it, and the films monotone tends to turn away most people! As I said unless your looking for something stronger then nytol, find another movie!
Rating: Summary: Imperfection from Messrs. Anderson and Wilson Review: You want to talk about pretentious? The title of this review is pretentious. The movie? Well...let's just say it's incomplete. I enjoyed many aspects of the Royal Tenenbaums, most of all Royal Tenenbaum himself. One of Hackman's greatest roles, and he dives in head first. The filmmakers have done a wonderful job of making a sympathetic character out of a bad man. But he's funny. Oh, is he funny. He has all of the film's best lines. And they're delivered naturally because they're organic. Anderson and Wilson weren't just forcing some great one-liners for a cheap laugh; you can tell that they are things that a totally non-empathetic guy like Royal would say. On the other hand, why was Bill Murray's character (something St. Clair? I can't even remember his name) even here except to be someone for Margot to leave. And that boy, Dudley. Is it just me, or is that Tim Burton, Jr.? Generally Owen Wilson draws my attention in whatever he is in, but here he seems to be wasted in a thankless role of author/druggie/Tenenbaum-wannabe. But that's the sign of a good writer/actor: not writing yourself the best role. I was entertained by most of the film (the narration by Alec Baldwin didn't even bug me), but about two-thirds of the way through, I started losing interest. Sure, the ending wrapped everything up nicely, but perhaps it was too nicely? Should a movie about these people even have a happy ending (such as it was)? But, anyway, I wouldn't know whether to recommend this or not. It's not a great film, and even some fans of their previous works don't seem to like it, but it appears to be attracting a devoted following, so I guess it's just one of those films that stands alone and draws its own crowd slowly. Check it out and see what you think.
Rating: Summary: I am one of the lucky few... Review: who seem to understand and appreciate what Wes Anderson and Owen Wilson do. This movie is absolutely brilliant, though I will admit that very few people laughed when I saw it in the theater. I am not trying to sound elitist, because this movie is definitely not for everyone. Rent it, and watch it a couple of times. It may take you two viewings to really get "into" what they are doing, but it is worth your valuable time. The humor is subtle, I don't deny that. But overall this is a wonderfully engaging movie, and it deserves your complete attention.
Rating: Summary: Right up there with "Rushmore" Review: Hoo boy. You know, I cringe anymore when I see little jewels of American high culture--Lucinda Williams' "Car Wheels On A Gravel Road," Jonathan Franzen's "The Corrections" and Wes Anderson's "Rushmore" and "Royal Tenenbaums" come to mind-- become crossover success stories in the world of Joe Sixpack, because all that happens is that scores of listeners, readers and viewers whose frames of reference are Garth Brooks, Barbara Kingsolver and Mel Gibson encounter art that goes right over their heads and weirds them out in the bargain. For what it's worth, I loved nearly everything about "The Royal Tenenbaums," from the frozen-in-1964 look of the Tenenbaum home to the clever parodies of Oliver Sacks and Cormac McCarthy, from the deadpan weirdness of Royal's brood to the beautiful framing of long shots, from the oblique tip of the hat the writers make toward J. D. Salinger's Glass family to the modernist-artifact typeface of the titles. God bless America, though, where anyone with internet access is free to criticize what he doesn't understand.
Rating: Summary: This movie is worth watching but don't buy it. Review: When I saw ads for this film it was portrayed as a comedy. From the beginning I realized this wasn't the comedy I was expecting. I must admit I did laugh at certain points, but overall, I guess I'm just a sucker for slapstick. Although, I was disappointed with the lack of laughs, the movie was redeemed by its dramatic climax. I do recommend this film, but don't buy it. Rent it, Borrow it but don't buy it. It's worth viewing, but it will not be needed in your home video collection.
