Rating: Summary: awesome Review: This is a movie for someone who appreciates a movie wth just an overwhelming amount of depth. This movie was worked on to the finest detail. The movie is overflowing with irony, and it makes watching it more than once very well worth it. Wes Anderson has again created a great movie. This movie is a subtly clever as they come.. and you really have to watch it more than once to fully appreciate it. As for the negative reviews, you really have to have some intelligence to appreciate this movie.. yeah. so.. buy it.
Rating: Summary: I'm sorry to report this movie did not makes the top ten. Review: Well I'm coming out today, I'm going to say this movie WAS NOT great mabey good but the hype is very undeserving. I found this movie boring and only occationally funny. Rushmore easily forshadows this movie as far as substance and subtle humor goes. Its not all bad though as I said it has its times of humor and its even occationally touching but all and all its just not a great film... sorry.
Rating: Summary: The royal bores! Review: My wife and I attempted to sit through this movie with the best intentions. I should point out that my taste in humor runs to the Monty Python school of both silliness and cerebral humor, and I also enjoy "quriky" humor, while my wife tends to prefer physical silliness and in-your-face yuks (more of the latter-day Satureday nite brand of humor). We watched the first hour of this movie and neither of us laughed, neither of us wanted to watch this mess for another minute. What a sad waste of of some very great talent! There is nothing remotely appealing in the characters; in fact, neither my wife nor I cared one iota for any of them. And we could easly do without elongated narration of very boring material. (You know, it's after seeing movies like this that one realizes that for the amount of money wasted making this sort of thing, you could probably feed a small country!)
Rating: Summary: wesss andersonnn Review: just a fantastic movie. all of the actors---even gwyneth paltrow (!) handled their roles fantastically. gene hackman gave, if not his best, then at least his most interesting portrayal, even the kid actor's were great. full of irony, metaphors, and then just some quirky stuff. it was surreal, almost like a fairy tale. the cinematography was great, very smooth and flowing; matched the theme of the movie. and of course the music was great, lots of velvet underground or nico stuff. definitely buy the soundtrack.
Rating: Summary: like, whatever Review: Okay, before I commence with the dissing, allow me a few qualifiers. First off, I am a big Wes Anderson fan. Bottle Rocket was great, and Rushmore is one of the greats of all time. Love that movie.Second, my tastes can hardly be considered pedestrian. I tend to like the edgier things in life. That being said, I don't have much good to say concerning this movie. Maybe I'm just a little cynical, but to me one thing is obvious, first and foremost: Wes Anderson has been making a name for his quirky self, and in a big way, these past few years, right? And while the attention has been generally well-deserved, what it has resulted in is a bunch of Hollywood paper-dolls all barking at his doorstep, trying to get in. What they want is credibility. Every Hollywood star yearns for their "prestige" picture, you know? They already have fame and fortune, now all they need is a dash of integrity to make themselves feel good at the end of the day. And in the case of the Royal Tennenbaums, we have more star power than any one director could ever know what to do with. Getting to the actual movie, I was put off right from the very beginning. First of all, the fact that the movie begins with a 15-minute monologue is automatically problematic. A story should sell itself. You shouldn't have to spend the first quarter of an hour telling the viewer why he should care. It's also a good indication that perhaps the story needs to be reconsidered and whittled down a bit. Which it did, and which it wasn't. In fact, all of the energy and planning seemed to go more into the background than it did the action taking place in the foreground. Furthermore, once I realized it was Alec Baldwin doing the voiceover, it was disillusioning, to say the least. Not only are the characters too many, but they are also uninteresting... which is ironic, considering the lengths to which the movie goes to be interesting. The rich backdrops, the careful consideration of color, the sharply composed camerawork, the well-crafted art in the background... it all overwhelms the senses and as a result neutralizes itself out. Every effort was made to be original and eccentric, but no restraint was taken, and as a result the whole thing comes off as, well, (airy). You end up hating all of the characters. At least I did. I never gave much thought to Gwyneth Paltrow in the first place, I suppose, but here she seems all-too content to do nothing. Her character just takes up space on the screen. What makes it worse is that one gets the impression that she thought it was the performance of her career. Bill Murray is utterly wasted. Whereas he was at a peak in Rushmore, here he seems bored and insulted. he doesn't even get to, well, be funny. And that's what Bill Murray does... he does funny. Why wasn't he funny? I'm not gonna sit here and run down through the list of actors, offering my critique. Suffice it to say that there is simply too much going on, conceptually, for anything to ever really coalesce in real time. I don't know how I can be in such a minority, here. The movie is dull and irritating. Final criticism: the subplot of brother loving step-sister, then trying to kill himself over said love, is ...poor writing at it's worst. I simply couldn't believe it when I saw it. Who wrote this movie, anyway? A 16-year old Marilyn Manson fan? Puh-leeze. Sometimes it just seems as if the critical establishment is protective of it's sacred cows. It's as if their minds were made up before the movie ever hit the screen. Wes Anderson is the critical darling of the day. Happens all of the time, I suppose.
Rating: Summary: This Movie ...!!! Review: I hate to say it, but despite what appears to be a stellar cast of characters almost all of whom I usually like, this movie was ...!!! It was not funny, did not have interesting character development, and overall was simply BORING!!! It was not even worth the R Rating that it has as I did not see anything inappropriate except for a few swear words such as the ... that could easily have been deleted or changed if they wanted to bump the rating up to a PG 13. ... I give this movie two big thumbs down!!!!
Rating: Summary: One of the worst movies I have ever seen.... Review: The Royal Tenenbaums....I cant tell you how eager I was to see this movie....The cast is unbelievable, and the reviews were glowing...all I have to say is ugh...I am NOT a stupid woman..my dislike for this movie has NOTHING to do with not getting it....All in all....The Royal Tenenbaums is a Royal Mess...DO NOT waste your time.
Rating: Summary: Overated beyond beleif Review: Watched this to the end in hope of some redeeming factor -- but none came....even some "Hal Harltlyisk" lines could not save this brutal job of "filmmaking".....
Rating: Summary: A waste of talent Review: No sense of irony, no humor either...eccentricities, maybe. This movie is pointless, plain boring, a waste of talent. If seduced by the vast cast of well-known actors, believing their performance can save this ill-scripted movie, don't.
Rating: Summary: If you liked rushmore, you'll like this one Review: If you are a fan of Wes Anderson or Rushmore, you'll like this movie. I think you need to see it twice to really appreciate it. It is deffenitly on the bizzare side; but who doesn't like to watch a family more disfunctional then their own? While it is a must buy for collectors, its not a movie that you'll watch all the time (hence the three stars).
