Rating: Summary: Royally Funny Review: This film got off to a bad start with a long exposition scene. Usually expositions of this type are reserved for science-fiction or fantasy films. It was a jarringly staccato introduction of the seemingly unreal and unsympathetic Tenenbaums. In retrospect, I think this was probably necessary as the characters have complex relationships so their backstory was essential. For awhile it looked like it was going to be a gentile version of a Woody Allen film. There are also one or two early scenes that border dangerously on kitsch. Then about 30 minutes into the film, a strange thing happened, I began warming to the characters and started to enjoy myself. The soundtrack is full of songs that fit the mood perfectly. This film has enough twists, laughs and depth to keep it interesting and possibly more. I highly recommend this charming, original little film. Don't miss this one if you like sophisticated comedy.
Rating: Summary: Modern Masterpiece Review: Directors with the last name Anderson pretty much rule the world of movies. Okay so just Wes and P.T. (and deep down I love Mortal Kombat and Event Horizon, so Paul Anderson too, but don't tell anyone). If you like the worlds Anderson painted in Rushmore or Bottle Rocket, or if you like good actors working with material that lets them be great, or if you like beautiful sets, or if you like beautiful cinematography, or if you like movies, or if you like to laugh, or if you like dysfunctional families, or if you have any taste at ALL... watch this movie! Then a month later watch it again to fully appreciate the brilliance. When I saw it in the theaters I thought it was pretty good, so when it came out on DVD i bought it. Rewatching it I realized how great it really is. Easily one of the best of the last 5, 10, 15 years. Some say Anderson is pretentious, but to be pretentious you have to make EXCESSIVE claims or EXAGERATE importance. Any inherent claim of importance in this movie is fully justified by its style and content. Buy it now!
Rating: Summary: Wish I could give 6 stars! Review: A film for thinking, feeling people who love quirky characters, depth of feeling, and complex relationships. This film is about our amazing capacity as humans to hurt, to heal, and to love our families. I very highly recommend it. I enjoyed it many times more the second time, because the first time through I was pretty worried about what was going to happen to the characters--they were so believable.
Rating: Summary: The Perfect Cure For Insomnia ! Review: Please be kind to yourself and save the time and money by NOT getting this movie. I was fooled by the trailer, cover and cast into thinking it was a comedy. It was the most boring movie I have ever watched and I would have switched off after 10 minutes if it was on TV. I seem to recall managing a slight smile on two occasions - hmmm, not bad for 2 hours 'entertainment'! The dull, pathetic characters hold no interest whatsoever and it's the only comedy ever that has made me feel depressed. It's one of those movies that all the 'artsy' critics rave about for it's "excellent direction and inter-woven supblots" or something. All the people here who think it's great are obviously those sad, over-the-top movie buff types who think a quirky character flaw is hilarious. If you prefer to be entertained (even slightly) then stear clear of this!
Rating: Summary: A great time to take a snooze! Review: This is called a comedy? This movie would be outstanding if it were used only for the purpose of putting people to sleep. I can not believe with this many big name actors and actresses that a movie could be this boring, awful, and most of all not funny. Trust me, do not buy this movie. It is not worth one kernel of popcorn.
Rating: Summary: Booooring Review: Tried two times to watch this movie to the end and both times I fell asleep. It is booooooring.
Rating: Summary: Not what I thought it would be Review: I was really looking forward to watching this movie on the strength of the casting alone. I've never seen any of the other films written and directed by the same team, so I didn't know what it would be like. The actors do what they can, but the writing seemed disjointed and I just wanted to smack most of the characters and tell them to get a life! Gwyneth Paltrow is one of my favorite actresses, but her character was just too cliched- her adopted father didn't love her so she looked for love from other men (and women in a short scene that was completely pointless) including one of her adopted brothers. This movie did not give the audience any real connection with the characters. I was more upset when the dog died than with what happened to any of the characters. The only reason I gave this movie two stars is because of the cast- and they deserved a better script.
Rating: Summary: Walked out of the theater thinking "who cares"? Review: This movie had its moments for sure, good acting, etc but the critical flaw in my mind was that the characters were such a bunch of idiots that I frankly didn't care much what happened to them and by the time this movie was done, I was bored and ready to leave. Rent this one, not worth adding to a collection unless you just like the actors.
Rating: Summary: _The Royal Tenenbaums_, crown prince of Wes Anderson¿s films Review: My favorite of Anderson's three full-length features to date. For me, there's a distinct progression from _Bottle Rocket_ to _Rushmore_ and then this, his latest, _The Royal Tenenbaums_--they're all excellent, but each is better than the last. The Tenenbaums is an extremely satisfying film on all fronts. The acting, cinematography, story and dialogue excel. And together create what all movies strive for, but rarely achieve in the collaborative work of filmmaking, a delightful amalgam of seamless synergy. Even though I was ambivalent about it, Anderson's narrative device of framing the sections of the film as chapters in a book, gets additional points from me for expressing a willingness to take chances and experiment, a quality decidedly absent in so many of today's filmmakers. Some specifics of what I enjoyed about the cinematography-use of lurid colors (house, clothes), shots (red cross over Richie "Baumer" Tenebaum's hospital bed). Thought quirky characters, family/friends, worked well in that my suspension of disbelief was never unduly challenged. And the cast, all first-class actors, performed as a highly complimentary ensemble without any obvious ego jousting. If you haven't yet, get it, see it. If you already have, see it again, it's worth it. A+
Rating: Summary: One of my top five Review: First off, I'll say that I have seen a lot of movies. I will also say that there are only about 4 that I can think of that can even be compared to The Royal Tenenbaums. One of the reviewers on this site mentioned that he was annoyed that no critics liked the film. I'll remind (and reassure) you that many of the major movie critics loved the movie. (Anthony Lane, Roger Ebert, Peter Travers, etc.)
