Rating: Summary: The "Citizen Kane" of Comedy! Review: It is a man's ego which tells him he is the hunter and she is the hunted. In fact, it is seldom so. A woman's doesn't open up her world unless she wants to; it is as simple as that. And here we have a woman - glamorous, rich and, no doubt, highly wooed by an endless army of men. She is intelligent, witty, sharp and quick. She dispenses of suitors as if it were a game for she knows there isn't a man in the world who can win her heart, but she waits nonetheless. Along comes an absent-minded professor who she makes mincemeat of during a farcical encounter on a gold course. She takes his golfball and car, makes a buffoon of him in front of others, and stikes another notch on her belt. And that is that! She sits that evening in a nightclub, bored and learning "an-olive-in-the-glass" trick from a bartender. An olive falls to the floor. She reaches to get it, but our Professor, waiting to meet a benefactor for dinner, walks by and slips on the olive, landing him atop his tophat he was holding in his hand. He gets up and, seeing who it is, tells her "to go away". She says, "I was here first". He says, "Then I'll go away." And as she watches him move to another part of the nightclub, an amazing transformation takes place. This beatuiful, intelligent woman who can have any man she wants finds herself drawn to a man who wants nothing to do with her! And this is unacceptable! And this is where the fun, the swiftest and funniest rollercoaster ride in cinema, begins! There may be movies which honor this film through imitation ("What's Up Doc?" was more a homage to it), but none have ever matched the relentless pace this movie maintains. Slapstick aside, this is the funniest and, yet, truly poignant love stories ever brought to the screen. You laugh bellylaughs, you laugh hysterically and the wit and quick banter leave you begging for more. At the end, though, when she swoons back and forth atop a ladder and he professes his love for her and tells her she gave him the greatest day of his life(a day in which he was wrestling a leapord in a pond, dressed in drag, chased a fox terrier for hours looking for a dinasoaur bone, and ended up in jail), you realize that the jaded woman has discovered life through the prince that thought he was a frog! Make no mistake about it - this is a heart warming love story, albeit wrapped in the most hilarious celluloid ever produced by Hollywood. If you have not seen this movie, you have missed out on one of the foundations which make Hollywood the Capital of the imagination. "Bringing Up baby" is the "Citizen Kane" of comedy!
Rating: Summary: One of the First and Best Screwball Comedies! Review: This is one of the fastest, funniest and zanniest comedies ever made. Katherine Hepburn and Cary Grant are in great shape. A funny script, 2 of the 30's greatest actors, Howard Hawks, and a great supporting cast combine to make this one of the most funniest films ever made. Rapid-fire dialogue and hilarious situations make this film entertaining all the way through. I can't see how this film could of been a flop when first released, it has stood the test of time better than most films from that era. This is the definitive screwball comedy, hilarious, see this movie. One of the greats. From a scale of 1-10 I give this film a 10!
Rating: Summary: A Classic Disaster Review: This film was a box-office disaster when it was released in 1938 and remains so more than a half-century later. Even legendary film stars Katherine Hepburn and Cary Grant can't rescue a terrible script and lousy directing. For all its frenetic pace, there isn't a single laugh or even a chuckle in the entire reel. One feels embarassed for the actors, particularly Hepburn, who bought out of her contract after the film flopped. She must have been mortified at the screening.
Rating: Summary: A funny-roll-on-the-floor-with-laughter-movie Review: This was the first Katharine Hepburn movie I saw, boy was it good! She really shines as the crazy zany rich girl. Her character is always getting her self in odd fixes, but Cary Grant is like her knight in shining armor and always comes to the rescue! I would recomend this to anyone who likes to laugh!
Rating: Summary: I LOVE THIS MOVIE! Review: This was the first video I ever bought! It's the best cure for a bad day I can think of. Grant does a perfect absentminded professor; Hepburn is at her zany best (who'da thunk it)....the supporting cast were seamless and even the animals were perfect. Depressed? Rent this video!
Rating: Summary: I LAUGHED 'TILL I CRIED! Review: Grant and Hepburn are hillarious together and I loved both of their characters. I rented it out of curiosity and wound up watching it non-stop over and over until I regretably had to return it. You must be able to appreciate old movies and the type of comedy they used in that time period. If you cant then you might not enjoy it and will then trash it on one of the following reviews. But if you do watch this wonderful classic, enjoy.
Rating: Summary: Grant,Hepburn Fabulous! Review: One of the funniest films ever made. Great direction. Grant is at his best. Fitzgerald adds a lot of laughs as a silly drunk.
Rating: Summary: Grant's Great, Kate's Mistake Review: Everytime I watch this hilarious antique of the past, I try to ignore Katherine Hepburn, a woman obviously with a sharp mind and intellect, behaving like an escaped mental patient whose just had a labotomy. She's so miscast it's a complete embarassment--but then there is the delightful, gorgeous, sexy and wonderful Cary Grant who should have taught Kate the Idiot some of his secrets of comedic timing. Maybe she had no other way of doing this, since her part was written for a brainless bimbo from hell. Her voice is so arch (ah, dahling...)and high it makes your skin crawl. I wish they could release a video/DVD version where Kate has been digitally replaced by Glenda Farrell-a gal who could have taught even Grant tons of tips about timing and comedy. Great flick if you only pretend Kate the NOt So Great (in this one, anyway) isn't there.
Rating: Summary: One of the funniest movies I've ever seen! Review: This is one the funniest movies ever made! If you haven't seen it yet, do ASAP!
Rating: Summary: Wild and crazy and hysterical and FUN! Review: This has got to be one of he funniest movies I've ever seen. Howard Hawks must have been some director, to be able to fashion such a hilarious film out of a madcap pace, a script in which everyone talks at the same time, and madcap performances from Hepburn, Grant, and the several supporting actors in character roles. Full of fall-down-funny scenes and one-liners. Oh, the one-liners! It can't get much better than this.
