Summary: I Don't Care for It - But My Mother Does
Review: I bought this DVD as a gift for my mother. And while I don't particularly care for this movie in the slightest, she was elated to have it on DVD. Apparently, its pretty good.

Summary: Christmas classic
Review: This often-overlooked Christmas gem is one of the true classics of the season. Cary Grant, Loretta Young & David Niven all deliver wonderful performances in this wonderfully inspiring movie.

Summary: What is important in life?
Review: This is a great comedy with a message for everyone. Most of the main characters in this movie have a problem with focusing in what should be important to them. Bishop Henry Brougham (Niven) is more focused on building a cathedral as a monument to God than the purpose of the cathedral or any alternate use of money. Mrs. Hamilton (Gladys Cooper), who holds the purse strings, is thinking the cathedral is more of a monument to her late husband. Even an angel named Dudley (Grant), sent to help, gets sidetracked in the process by the bishop's wife, Julia (Young) who in turn may be distracted by a hat. The great acting of major stars will distract you. Watch this movie to find out how and if they are able to recognize their folly and what they can do about it?

Summary: Wonderful Moments of Whimsy
Review: The Bishop's Wife is a fantasy about an angel come to earth to help a husband (the bishop of the title) and his wife (also from the title) find that place where they used to be. The casting of Cary Grant as the angel is perfect and the movie shines the most when he is on screen doing his magic, particulary the scenes with Loretta Young on the cab ride leading to ice skating. David Niven is perfectly distant and Monty Woolley does a wonderful bit of magic of his own with his part. Despite all of these good bits, the movie still does not quite work for me. The ending always seems a little fuzzy and one is left with the feeling that nothing has possibly been changed by this miraculous event and Loretta Young will still act more from a sense of duty than a pursuit of joy. It is worth seeing for Cary Grant but the magic seems to grow a little dimmer with every viewing.

Summary: Be Careful What You Pray For!
Review: That's the enjoinment to make to Episcopalian Bishop David Niven, who has prayed for help in raising the funds necessary from a frigid controlling widow to finish building his dream cathedral. Angel Cary Grant appears in answer to Niven's prayers and raises the money--and the interest of Niven's wife, Loretta Young, too! Just saw it again on Christmas Day, along with my sister and sister-in-law. Both were besides themselves with laughter at the comedic talents of David Niven, in particular. Loretta Young is simply luminous and Cary Grant suave as ever. Supporting actress Gladys Cooper (the cold nun in "Song of Bernardette" and the cold mom in "Now Voyager") turns in a solid performance as the rich widow, who has shocking secret motives behind her imperious actions, as Cary Grant reveals in a very good scene. A good comedy about an interesting triangle, perfect for Christmas viewing.

Summary: A CHRISTMAS DVD FOR ALL SEASONS
Review: When you put too many top stars in the same film the results are sometimes disappointing. That is far from the case in this movie. Three of the best-ever actors combine to make this one a true classic. The interaction of this unusual triangle serves to involve the viewer more in the realities of life and living than in the movie's incidental supernatural events. This is my absolute favorite for Loretta Young and one of the best ever for both David Niven and Cary Grant.

This is a "Must See" if there ever was one. It just makes you feel good each and every time you watch it. So either buy, beg or borrow this movie(DVD & VHS formats are about equal in quality) and my guess is that you will never regret it.

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED BY VEDA & jIM

Summary: Would the real angel pleast stand up!
Review: I found this gem only two years ago. Being enamored of Grant, I had not seen him "perfect" until I saw this film. What is really great is that a review preceded the showing. This is where I learned that originally, Niven had the angel role and Grant was the preacher. Soon after rehearsal began, Grant insisted that they switch parts and Niven agreed to do so. The switch was the magic that makes this film work. The movie is poignant and makes one long for that type of intervention and outcome. A must see each holiday season.

Summary: A must-have holiday perennial
Review: I'll let everyone else below sing the praises of this delightful film--I even like to watch it at other times of year! Let me instead sing the praises of this fine DVD transfer. Never have I seen such a sterling, blemish-free version of this classic Christmas film. From the moment the credits appear, the image is so crisp and clear I thought for a moment I had paused the DVD player. Kudos to MGM Home Entertainment for their fine work with this release.

Review: This is an excellent film to watch if you are fans of Cary Grant, Loretta Young, David Niven, classic films or if you enjoy heartwarming stories. Cary Grant plays Dudley, an angel sent down to assist a bishop (David Niven) in raising money to build a new church. This is a timeless classic that hasn't aged a bit. It is also a great film to watch with the whole family. This is a terrific film that also features Gladys Cooper and Elsa Lanchester. Purchase this film today! HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!
