Summary: You took a puck in the nuts
Review: I had only seen a couple episodes of the Larry Sanders Show before I bought the DVD. It is one of the funniest (fake) "talk shows" out there (better than Letterman or Leno, who I can not watch).

I'm not a huge fan of Garry Shandling outside of the show, but in this show he hits it right. Plus, Rip Torn and Jeffrey Tambor really shine in nearly every episode. Kind of funny to hear them swear once in a while, or more (forgetting that it was originally on HBO).

The so-called guests on the show are good too, as they blend fact and fiction. Billy Crystal gets upset when Larry talks about his old stuff instead of his new movie he is trying to plug, Carol Burnett worries that Larry's balls showed under his Tarzan outfit, etc.

Waiting for season 2.

Recommended.

Summary: Happy To Have Larry Sanders on DVD, But...
Review: ...as others have stated, the picture on this DVD wavers between a good-looking full-screen quicktime movie (on the GOOD end) and streaming realplayer video at its worst.

I don't look for TOO many extras on a television series DVD if only because of the amount of information that's packed onto it. And the interview is at least entertaining, so I have no beef there.

Audio is as good as it is on the television broadcast, as this show (at least these episodes) were produced long before 5.1 was anywhere near a home theater. No bells and whistles, but no problems either.

However, I must reiterate that the picture is extremely disappointing, leaving me only to hope that the good folks at Columbia/Tri-Star let a mistake slip by and something will be done to fix this in the future. (A slim hope, yes, but a hope nonetheless.)

I'm happy to have it on DVD, but a bit bummed with the quality treatment it received.

Summary: The Larry Sanders DVD is hillarious! Hey now this is Great!
Review: The Larry Sanders DVD is a collection of all the episodes from the first season of the HBO produced series. The three DVD's embody all the brilliant humor and wit that is a mainstay of the show. With many guest star cameo appearances from famous names in the business, their interactions on the fictitious Larry Sanders Show is meant to simulate what really goes on behind the scenes at a real nightly talk show. In fact continuous references point to David Letterman and Jay Leno the current kings of Late night. The famous personalities often can be found making fun of themselves, presenting themselves often as egotistical and selfish. The whole fictitious show is really poking fun at how the late night shows are produced, written, and brought to life. This process is not only fascinating and very close to the truth, but is loads of fun to watch. Garry Shandling who stars as Larry Sanders is hilarious, with his witty but obvious insecurities, interlaced with a celebrity self absorption proves to be very engaging. Rip Torn as Arthur or "Artie" the Producer of the show is not only hilarious and intriguing to watch, but one of the true gems of the series. Rip Torn's gruff all knowing persona is presented as the one who is always bailing out Larry the host of the show and makes for great entertainment. You may find yourself laughing about his lines days later. Jeffery Tambor is also very funny as the disrespected sidekick of Larry who accordingly should feel lucky he is there, and is constanly being picked on by Larry and Artie. The cast of characters that comprise the shows creative team are funny and convincing bringing to life the daily turmoil that goes with a nightly talk show. For any fans of late night, or of the show itself that originally aired in 1992 and enjoyed a successful run until 1998 on HBO this is a must for your collection. This DVD set is guaranteed to bring you a lot of laughs as well as present you with a very interesting picture of what takes place behind the scenes of our favorite late night talk shows. Rarely has such a wonderful and truely clever series been brought to life that promises to entertain again and again.

Summary: Very Disappointing DVD
Review: Skip to the last paragraph if you already know how great the Larry Sanders show is, and are only interested in a technical review of the DVD.

Instead of taking a job as a real life talk show host, Garry Shandling thought it would be more interesting to make a comedy series about being a talk show host. And he was right. The Larry Sanders show sports very funny writing, a talented ensemble cast, no commercials (thanks HBO!), no laugh track (well, except during the "on air" segments when the studio audience is a character in the show), and they occasionally swear (just like people do in real life!). This show is every bit as funny and entertaining as Seinfeld. And, while the first season isn't the best (my vote goes to the 4th season), I never expected to see The Larry Sanders show on DVD so I'm a happy camper.

Well, sort of. This 3-disc set is the worst transfer to DVD I have ever seen. The reruns on HBO look and sound better than this. If you think that I am exaggerating, don't say that I didn't warn you. The "on air" segments (shot on video) look only slightly better than the "backstage" segments (shot on film), which are almost unwatchable. Dialog only comes out of the center channel unless you switch your receiver from Surround to Stereo. Even then, the sound is uninspired. The box is flimsy and contains a one page liner note that doesn't have a home as soon as you remove the shrink wrap. There are no chapter stops within the episodes. The only extra is a 27 minute interview with Garry Shandling, but it is very good. In conclusion, I'm glad the series is on DVD, but I just can't figure out how Columbia TriStar could have messed up the transfer so badly!

Summary: Funniest Shows I've ever seen
Review: The Larry Sanders Show is without question one of the funniest TV Shows I've ever seen. I don't watch many TV Shows today, but I use to watch the larry sanders show all the time when it was on HBO, Bravo, and now UPN. My favorite character is without question, Artie (Rip Torn), the character is so perfect for Mr Torn it's impossible to imagine any other actor playing the part, he constantly assists himself side by side with Larry, protecting him from the day 2 day...and ofcourse constantly telling Larry his bottom is not fat. Even thought the 3 Main Characters (Larry, Artie, and Hank) are what the show is all about, the supporting characters keep give the show it's flavor. Characters like Phil, Paula, Beverly, and Darlenne work backstage of "The Larry Sanders Show" to make Mr. Sanders as happy as can be, although it's usually them making the show go haywire. I hope Season 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6 will all be releashed on DVD in the near future as I've just purchased season 1 a couple days earlier. This is a hard DVD to find,... Anyway, this is probably my favorite TV show of all time, ranking right up there with the TV Shows of the 80's (Perfect Strangers, Family Ties, Head of The Class, Who's The Boss) and you like this show as much as I do, you almost have to have Season 1 on DVD. I use to challenge myself trying to remember the characters & their jobs on the show, let me see how many I can post.

Larry Sanders (Host)
Arthur (Producer of Show)
Hank Kingsley (Larry's Sidekick)
Beverly (Larry's Secretary)
Darlenne (Hank's Secretary 92-95)
Phil (Head Writer)
Stevie Grant (Larry's Agent)
Paula (Talent Booker)
Jerry (Head Writer 92-93)
Brain (Hank's Secretary 95-98)
Norman (Larry's Publicist)
Francine (Larry's 1st wife)
Jeanie (Larry's 2nd wife)
Mary Lou (Booker after Paula)

Summary: Great show, bad DVD
Review: LOVE The Larry Sanders Show...it's a gem. But I can't believe Columbia Tristar couldn't have done a better job with the first season DVD set. The picture quality is dreadful. The menu design looks like something you'd see on one of those B-movie DVDs you can fish out of the Wal-Mart bargain bin. There are no chapters within the episodes, so if you have to stop the DVD player in the middle of an ep, you have to FF through the ep to find your place again. Ridiculous!

I can only hope that the delay in getting Season Two out on DVD means that Columbia is putting a little more attention into the production and design this time around. This is one of the funniest, best-written shows that has ever graced a TV screen--it deserves SO much better!
