Summary: FILM=GOOD....DVD=BAD
Review: I loved this movie when I saw it in the theatre
and couldn't wait for it to be released on DVD.
But don't believe them when they say "widescreen"
I guess it is in a sorta fakey-letterbox way,
but it's obviously not the film's true aspect ratio.
The opening credits are, but it promptly switches to the disapointing black bars that really just annoy me more,
because it still almost has to pan&scan in some scenes.
Either "format to fit my screen"
or give me the movie the way it was shot.
Not this crappy inbetween cop-out, damnit.

Other than that, the film is great.

Summary: my thoughts on this movie
Review: I really enjoyed this movie , throughout the movie i was wanting holly and nat to become a couple and i am so happy at the end they did because they overcame all the obstacles even though it took forever. I really wanted to punch out Anna Friel's character but then at the very end i am glad holly finally stood-up for herself.

Summary: I am Fascinatied
Review: I rent this movie just to see something ( I had never heard of it) and by the end of the movie I couldnt stop thinking about it, the story is so real, Nat and Holly are so vulnerable when they are together, for me this movie was an inspiration!!.
I saw it 6 times in two days. One of my best movies ever!!!

Summary: Friendship Through Thick and Thin
Review: I saw this movie on cable and thought it was good. Focusing on the friendship between Miranda and Holly, the movie made me think of what friendship what is about. It's about caring, loving, struggling, coping, changing, etc. The girls were different but remained close. Their friendship at times was rocky because Marina was controlling and Holly was reserved and held herself back. Both have an affair with the professor which doesn't go well. He's married. Then there is Marina's older brother Oliver. He and Holly are in love but they can't be together. He marries a French girl but is she the one for him? It is when Miranda finally falls apart, Holly can only take but more than she can.
Their friendship had been through some odds and ends. One should let the other go so that one could make her own decisions and see what is in store for her. It could have made them or break them.

Summary: good movie poor dvd
Review: I saw this on the big screen 3 years ago and loved it. It was warm, funny, well acted, wonderfully filmed and compelling. I was really looking forward to getting the dvd. I couldn't find it anywhere locally except on Amazon. Luckily I was able to rent it before buying it. The widescreen aspect ratio of the original theatrical cut was 2.35:1 but the dvd transfer is only 1.85:1, however the opening credits is in 2.35:1!? The rest of the movie is cropped off at 1.85:1 and it looks terrible. Its a huge dissappointment not to have the entire picture on the dvd.

Summary: Terrific surprise
Review: I saw this one somewhat reluctantly and loved it. It really gets at the heart of complex, decades long, rocky friendships. The performances are remarkable and the periods details embarrassing in their accuracy. See it, before it disappears along with most other truly compelling movies.

Summary: Firendship Perfectly Captured
Review: I thought they captured "friendship" perfectly in this movie. The difference between infatuation, admiration, aqaintances and real, true friends is explored completely and very toughingly in this film. It captured the importance of having strong family bonds verses neglective parents. It brought back memories of the 80s-rebellion music days. Perfect preformances.

Summary: If you've ever had a Best Friend...
Review: If you've ever had a Best Friend, this movie should ring so true to you. I didn't concentrate much on the individual performances so much; I believe this film is meant to be seen without picking it apart. It is so realistic. How you feel suffocated, but need that other person. And, eventually you realize that you need to, and can, get away. And a clean break is what you need. I love how this movie didn't try and justify everything or spell everything, if anything, out. It makes it one of those movies that you have to watch a second or third time to get everything from each character. I yelled out loud at the screen a few times because I knew exactly what each girl was going through. There are elements of myself in both characters; spirit and spite. I absolutely loved it. So not Hollywood. It was excellent!!!!

Summary: Excellent Character Drama. Friends Can Be Too Close.
Review: Marina and Holly were best friends as children and vowed to always be together. But as they grow older, the nature of their relationship changes for the worse. Although Marina (Anna Friel) is an outgoing party girl, she seems unable to find an identity of her own and instead relies on the smarter and more introverted Holly (Michele Williams) to provide her with one. Holly is in love with Marina's brother Nat (Oliver Milburn), but Marina's jealousy has always come between them. Holly can hardly have a relationship with any man before Marina claims him for herself, and Holly's relationship ends in heartbreak. After the women finish college, Holly pursues a writing career and Marina seems to make a career of forcing herself into Holly's relationships. For some reason, although she blames Marina for her misery, Holly allows Marina to turn her life upside down and continue to stand between her and Nat, whom she still loves. Finally, when the women are in their 30's and Marina has married Holly's ex-boyfriend and converted to her Jewish faith, Holly decides she must break free and accepts a job overseas. Marina is hysterical at the prospect of living without Holly. But Holly's overdue decision to leave Marina to her own devices frees her to pursue the life that she has always wanted, even without fleeing overseas. And Marina survives, after all.

"Me Without You" is a wonderful and especially true-to-life character drama. Marina and Holly are both interesting people, and each is sympathetic in her own way. All of the film's characters, their actions, and their feelings are supremely believable. The performances are flawless and very admirable all around. Anna Friel and Michele Williams are exceptionally effective in their roles. It turns out that Michele Williams, probably best known for her teen roles in "Dick" and in tv's "Dawson's Creek", is a very fine actress. And Kyle MacLachlan has a small role as Daniel, one of Holly's and Marina's love interests. A story about a childhood bond that gets out of hand and becomes a co-dependent relationship of disastrous proportions sounds like it might be either a colossal bore or a horror flick. "Me Without You" is neither. Sandra Goldbacher's adept direction moves the story along at a fair clip, and it is easy to share these characters' frustrations. If you like character dramas, "Me Without You" is highly recommended.
