Summary: Alternate Ending Proposed to "Swept Away"
Review: "Swept Away" deserves an alternate ending: it turns out the husband purposely damaged the Zodiac dinghy engine to get rid of his annoying wife (Madonna). He purposely slows down the search of the two uninhabited islands left in the mediterranean. He is shocked when the incompetent search team (headed by Roberto Begnini) actually finds her on the island by mistake. Husband reluctantly retrieves Madonna after she takes Begnini down in a lipsync/bad-mime biathalon deathmatch. They fly off via helicopter together into the sunset. Husband drops Madonna off on Tom Hanks Island, a remote and exclusive resort for professional sporting equipment. Madonna falls in love with a domineering yet tender volleyball, and they live happily ever after; so a sequel is absolutely impossible. the end.

Review: Try as I might to like this movie, I could not. I remember at the premiere in London, how Guy Ritchie commented that it was an awful movie. Well, I'm sorry to say I must agree. I like Madonna and her co star is a beautiful man. But the performances here lacked spark, truth, passion, everything.

Summary: Bravo Madonna!
Review: This is a good movie, and Madonna doesn't give a wooden performance, she actually puts more emotion into her acting. I don't know why everyone said it was so bad, this is interesting and has a heartbreaking ending. I'm glad i bought the DVD, not just because I'm a Madonna fan. Good job Madonna!!!;)

Summary: Didn't push me over the Borderline...
Review: I have to say that all film critics need lay off Madonna! There are plenty of actors out there that revered when they shouldn't be. This wasn't as bad as they made it out to be. This movie wasn't great, but not terrible. It was sort of middle-of-the-road. Madonna's acting can be, at times, wooden and rehearsed, but come off it--this is just a movie, not Shakespeare. This wasn't meant to be an overly dramatic masterpiece. This is not a big Hollywood film; it's nice and small and entertaining. The script, well it could have been a lot better. But it is funny at times, as well as cute (like when they played charades). The pace of the film sometimes feels inconsistent though but not too badly. 'Swept Away' looks wonderful on DVD. It makes me want to take a trip to Malta--it's very beautiful. The 5.1 Dolby is pretty decent, but nothing spectacular. The extras are pretty good: director commentary, 16 deleted scenes with or without commentary, the making of 'Swept Away' (which originally aired on MTV, I think), cast bios, and trailers. This also has a French language track and subtitles in English and French. Overall, it wasn't a bad film--I've seen plenty worse! But it wasn't fantastic; just a good, little entertaining movie. I enjoyed it more than the terribly long and sappy 'Cast Away'.

Summary: Don't Listen to the Critics!!
Review: I just finished watching this movie. It is excellent. The critics never gave the movie a chance since Madonna was in it. This movie made me laugh out loud at times, cringe in uncomfort at other parts and feel sadness and pain for the characters at the same time. It is just a great movie that doesn't sell out at all. It doesn't fit the typical movie formula which is a WONDERFUL thing. We need more movies that break the molds instead of getting moldy! Buy this movie with confidence. It will be an emotional experience!

Summary: A tragic love story
Review: I think it can be agreed on that this movie was doomed before it was even released. Bad press and reviewers wanting to take their jab at Madonna's acting skills and "suckering" of Guy Ritchie to make a movie starring her killed it. But now that the dvd is out and i've had a chance to watch the movie, i have to agree with part amazon[.com]'s editorial review. Madonna does give the most believable performance of her career as Amber. Amazon[.com] does, however, say that the movie fails at making a valid point of the economics of capitalism, and this may be the case. I, though, did not watch this movie as a statement on capitalism, but as a love story. The style of the movie does change over and over again, and this is the only real flaw. The storyline flows fairly well, and the viewer can really see Amber and Giuseppe's relationship grow. From the funny beginning to the utterly heart wrenching end, this movie is very worthy of being viewed.

Summary: swept into the toilet
Review: First off, it's very amusing to see so many people referring to the "critical bias against Madonna" in their inexplicable defense of this piece of garbage. People, there's a reason the critics hate Madonna the "actress" -- it's because she .... She worse than .... I can remember being in high school plays where the worst kid was head and shoulders above Madonna. It is painful to listen to her phony-baloney it-comes-and-it-goes British accent. Woamn, you're from Michigan! But it's not just her pretentious presence, or the amateurish direction, or even the wince-inducing dialogue that makes this turkey so truly disgusting.
This waste of time is nasty and hateful to its core. This isn't a comment on shallow petty behavior; it is shallow and petty behavior. Nasty woman nearly gets ... and now she's nasty man's love slave. One feels polluted by Madonna and Guy Ritchie's self-importance. They both lack the skill to hide it, and their smirking "We're so funny and clever" attitude permeates every pore of this testatment to dung.

Summary: Critics aren't always right... or wrong
Review: Yes, Swept Away has been roundly trashed by the critics, and though I always take what they say with a grain of salt, I have to admit this was one of the worst films I saw in 2002. And I love Madonna! Then again, the Amazon editorial writes "Madonna gives her most believable performance" and "the love story was surprisingly sincere." It seems no one is to be believed!

The film was not as bad as most critics said - there were a few redeeming qualities. Madonna looks great (and can afford all that time at the gym to look buff), but her acting is incredibly wooden. It was distracting enough that you couldn't believe in her character. Poor Adriano Giannini (ruggedly handsome and shirtless most of the movie) had to make the best of it and did an admirable job.

The script is another matter. Madonna's character spends the first half of the movie exhibiting such boorish and obnoxious "American" behavior that it's hard to believe anyone would put up with her. After being stranded on the island, Giannini's character exhibit's such boorish and outrageous behavior toward his former tormentor (she keeps calling him "Pipi" instead of "Pepe" - there's a major ego crush!) that you have no sympathy for either of them. And I was shocked when the abuse incredibly turns to "romance." Sincere, my butt! Implausible at best.

Finally, the original film was about socialism vs capitalism. Given the new world order, the updated version cannot quite get into that political space, so instead the conflict becomes about class: the rich spoiled American vs the working class Italian. It doesn't quite work (or have the power) to explain the character's motivations. I also prefer the original's ending which was a bit more tragic.

Watch it for the voyeur factor only (Madonna is topless), but certainly don't expect very much. And don't waste your money buying the DVD!
