Summary: The pleasure abides
Review: Tragedy masquerading as comedy, this film could break your heart if you weren't already breaking your ribs laughing....

Not a dud performance in there but I think Paul McGann sometimes gets overlooked because the part isn't so flashy.

The subtext about which end of the ballroom these two thespians are really dancing is there without being overplayed.

Bruce Robinson is not just Marwood, he's Withnail too. And he's a genius.

Give this man more money to make more films.

Summary: An enigmatic trip through the last great days of the 1960's
Review: Withnail & I, both in its innocence and its debauchery as a story of two friends is heart-felt without being sappy; honest without being trite. Grant's performance bears a sort of cultish appeal. And Monty; oh Monty!

Summary: A True Classic
Review: Few films have covered the entire spectrum of human degeneracy as lovingly as this one and Withnail and I ranks as one of the great all time film classics. It's shameful that no oscars were handed out to the main suspects since this tale of England's twilight zone of the late sixties elicited some the best performances ever from its cast. Richard E. Grant is hilarious as the shrivelled, caustic Withnail though the real tour-de-force is Richard Griffith's "Uncle Monty", a camp, three hundred pound gourmand whose unfulfilled wish was to play Hamlet. There's simply nothing to add to the praise in this column. This film is a glorious atrocity and a masterpiece and will stand the test of time.

Summary: Hysterical, mordant comedy with a homosexual-panic subtext
Review: "W&I" isn't just the funniest Brit comedy since Monty Python; it's also arguably the funniest gay-themed flick ever. For although its young leads are not putatively gay, the subtext of homosexual panic pervades the whole shebang, but with a singular subtlety and wit -- it's only the subtext, after all. How great is this movie? Well, I'm not from London, and I'll never play The Dane, either, but I have stained my poetry books with the butter-drips from crumpets... and if I were to adopt an older, overweight, sedentary male cat, I'd name him "Uncle Monty" -- no kidding! Drawbacks to seeing it: now I can't hear the opening riffs to Hendrix's "Voodoo Child" without giggling & looking like an idiot for doing so... And I'll never look at a "firm, young carrot" or a chicken the same way again!

Summary: Great, but the "cut" line is a misnomer
Review: Just a little clarification - the film on video is not really "cut." It's the same as the film release from 1987, which I accidentally saw about 6 times in Toronto whilst skipping a 2nd year calculus class. The last video version (not the new one) was the first to include the bit about the thumbs, and I was surprised to see it. As it wasn't in the one I had seen and memorized in the cinema it didn't seem to fit.

Summary: NOT BALLS!
Review: Absolute Genius! I adore this film and everything about it

Summary: A reader's movie
Review: After I saw this film, I bought a copy of the screenplay. If you are capable of laughing when reading (I am told many people are not) then this is absolutely the next film you must rent. Drop what you are doing and walk, no run, to the nearest video rental establishment and demand the finest wines known to man. "B**LS! I'll take that and run a mile!"

Summary: Recently appeared in Premiere Magazine as...
Review: I saw this movie in Paris over ten years ago. None of the French people in the audience laughed. I was screaming so hard, the usher asked me to be quiet. The next day I saw it again and laughed even harder. This is absolutely one of the most hysterical films ever made. Premiere magazine recently listed it as one of the best neglected films of all time.

Summary: Genius film, but this edited version is very disappointing.
Review: I love this film, but as a resident in Japan I can only watch the US format.....several classic lines have been edited out, apparently only to shorten the running time. If you've seen the UK version this will be disappointing, however it is still a classic film!

Summary: Confirmation that somebody knows somthing about anything
Review: This film reassures the dissolute that there is a standard to be achieved in said behavior; akin to Ambrose Bierce at dinner with Oscar Wilde. Imports better than foreign beer when longing for a taste from overseas.
