Summary: Forego
Review: I'm still baffled by the accolades this movie has received. Aside from making midwesterners seem either violent, greedy, feeble, or trite, this movie plods along from one boring accent-ridden scene to the next .... At best, I was able to watch this movie with apathy. If you want to see not only a great Cohen Brothers movie, but one of the best movies in recent memory, buy Miller's Crossing instead.

Summary: Cult Classic?
Review: I didn't watch this movie until I got it at Walmart for 12.99! This is one film I'm sorry I waited for, if I had an opportunity to go see it on the big screen I would. There are so many priceless scenes, such taut, spare dialogue delivered with the very blackest of droll humor. At times the acting is so precise and convincing that you'll think it's a straight documentary. Slice of life characters are presented in episodic scenes, fired blankly with no or minimal camera movement much like a low-budget documentary.

This is not a movie for everybody even though it was Oscar garnered. Truly what an independent should be. Some friends of mine were annoyed by the precise timing and the cloying regional accent. I consider them a beloved asset.

It would have been so easy to screw this picture up with cluttered dialogue, fast-action and obvious characterizations, which is probably what most writer/directors would fall prey to. I saw a documentary on the Coen brothers and their explanation is that they had looked for a 'true crime' story to bring to the screen, but when they couldn't find an appropriate story, they made one up!

Steve Buscemi who can play "worthless loosers" better than anyone else, wrote, directed another terrific slice of life indie named "Trees Lounge". [Playing a denizen of Long Island.] The more the scenes are dissected the more they are admired. I particularly enjoy the hooker scenes, particularly the one where Marge interviews two young hookers [known as the "funny lookin'" scene]. And the "you can't go wrong with Jose Feliciano" scene. Who'd pay for THAT gal?! Also the "looks like it's gonna snow" scene with a citizen whose wife suggested that he file a report about a stranger he happened to talk to in a bar the previous night. Now who'd EVER do that in New York?! Henpecked Jerry has so many bumbling scenes as an inept, whining husband, father, son-in-law, car salesman and scheming wanna-be criminal that one wonders WHO is the lowest criminal the kidnappers or Jerry? Atleast the killers are honest!

I am a aficinado of true crime books and films. In fictional crime it's a challenge to create truly believeable killers and victims because truth is always stranger- or atleast more frighteningly entertaining! This is one exception.

Summary: Excellent and Nauseating!
Review: This is one of the most beautifully acted and directed films of Academy Awards History! It is gory, but funny, dramatic, but tongue- in- cheek and, it's most intriguing aspect- it's REAL. It's a true story, and is told just that way. An absolute must- see!

Summary: UNFORGETTABLE FARGO
Review: First off, who really cares if Minnesotans really talk like they do in Fargo--it's a MOVIE. A movie is fiction and the directors can do whatever they please. Also, I didn't find that the accent made them sound stupid, it actually gave them a nice sort of charm. A little something DIFFERENT. The acting in this movie is superb, from Macy and McDormand to the little bit-part actress at the restaurant cash register. : ) Basically, this story is about a used-car salesman--of all people--who wants two hired henchmen to kidnap his own wife. Yes, you did hear me right. But what Macy(the car salesman) doesn't know, is that these guys are absolute idiots. The wife is kidnapped and several people are killed, making some REALLY sticky and often funny situations. Sure, the plot sounds simple, but it is so much more than that. One of my favorite parts is when the guy is trying to hide his money. The music is very fitting for this movie. Oh, by the way, the UNEDITED (TV) version of Fargo is absolutely hilarious because instead of saying some objectionable 4 letter words, they replace those with "fruitful". "Take your fruitful wife!" is one good line. Lastly, despite any minor or major failings of this film, you can appreciate it for the message it conveys: CRIME DOESN'T PAY.

Summary: Gotta eat a breakfast Margie, I'll fix some eggs.
Review: This is a great film and the Coens best work to date. The fact that so many people dislike says something about the people that watch films. So what if the accents not accurate? Do these people really think that the English speak in posh perfect grammer and dulcet upper class tones as portrayed in many a film? It's just an accent for christs sake. And the Coens being Minnesotans themselves, are in a good position to judge. Some people,eh. Genius at work.

Summary: An utterly pointless movie. 'nuff said?
Review:

No? OK. How about this:

Who cares if the "accents" were done well? You can win an Oscar for doing a great accent? So much for the meaning of an Oscar. How does an accent make up for a half hour long plot diversion that leads NOWHERE?

This movie is one of those that DEFINES pointless, gratuitous violence - no matter how cleverly wrapped up in presentation, cinematography, or reputation.

Summary: Excellent
Review: Fargo is by far a HUGE classic in my books. This movie is a realistic one. All of the other reviewers are talking about how the accents are over-exaggerated, well, let me tell you that they are not, because I live in the north, and most people up here actually talk like that. You may think that is funny, but we also might think that YOUR accent is funny. Anyways, excellent well done movie.

Summary: Different
Review: It's hard to be fair about this movie. It is a breed apart from most of the films you can see. As such most people I know who saw "Fargo" loved it, or thought it was horrible. There doesn't seem to be any middle ground here.

What makes it different? The story? In the movie credits it says that this was based on a true story. This always makes me suspicious. How much of this story, exactly, is true? I don't know. The story does seems a little strange, but not unique. In it a man plans to kidnap his own wife so his father-in-law will pay a ransom. He hires some local hoods but the plan goes wrong.

There are two things about this movie which were really good. First the acting was almost perfect. Everyone in this movie seems to be well cast and believable. Even if it wasn't a true story, you could believe it was. Which was the other thing I liked about this film, the "side details." The movie is telling a story about some people who are involved in this kidnaping plot. But it also tells their stories. There are a lot of little details about these people and their lives, usually missing from other films. I think that this was what drove some people crazy. They want their film to focus on one point, one story. Life isn't like that, normally. Even in the middle of an exciting event, many other things will always be happening. This is also what attracted many fans. The details.

For me, I like films that are different or strange, sometimes. I could appreciate the efforts made here but, in the end, I didn't enjoy this film because it, for me, was so sad and depressing. I would give this film a "5" in terms of doing what the directors set out to do. It accomplished all of its goals. In terms of my personal viewing pleasure, my rating would be much lower. If the film I described is interesting to you, enjoy yourself.
