Rating: Summary: Extremely long and extremely engrossing Review: This movie is exhausting for those with short attention spans (such as mine) and it has subtitles to boot. I broke it into two parts and there were stretches when I stopped following the subtitles and just looked at the visuals. But this is a great movie. The sudden shifts in time, particularly the last third when we see the contemporary Baltic states, is extremely moving. There is so much to this movie. It reminds me of great literature from the 1950s that combined a sprawling view of history with humor and tragedy. It demands multiple viewings.
Rating: Summary: 5 stars best movie ever Review: Mozart's written music on paper, A Michelangelo sculpture, Mountain Dew (hey I like it), JFK in our hearts and The Thinking Man at the Gates of Hell. This movie fits in with the best of them all. I wish there was a man like Emir Kusturica in every country so he could introduce us to others worlds. Tragic things happen in this movie but yet it is funny. This movie makes you smile but tears come out of your eyes and your heart sinks. The more I think about this movie the more I realise how great it is. This is entertainment at its peak, the ultimate. Hmmm...lets see what other great movie summed up the history of a country...Forest Gump. It doesn't compare to this movie.
Rating: Summary: outstanding...unforgettable Review: Spellbinding, moving , comic and tragic at the same time, this movie portraits in a amazingly focussed manner the chaos that is Yugoslavia... its beauties, virtues, its paradoxes, treacheries, its people full of life... when is the DVD coming? (the music by Goran Bregovic is a treat by itself)....
Rating: Summary: Five Stars Review: This movie exempiflies one correct use of the media. There is a difference between a good movie and a good story. Few movies actually are able to combine both throughout the duration. I was stunned and have watched it many times. Could someone please tell me what the easiest way to find the soundtrack: it's label, the name, etc. Thanks.
Rating: Summary: A Masterpiece Review: Kusturica is a genius. The film is not just a masterpiece from the artistic point of view, it is strikingly profound in its interpretation of the history of Yugoslavia up to these days. One can better appreciate the film if one has a thorough understanding of the history of Tito's and Milosevic's Yugoslavias, as well as of the historical differences among the Croats, the Serbs and Muslims. There is no doubt that Kusturica, a muslim from Bosnia himself, produced a very objective and artistic recreation of the last 60 years of this country's history (or what remains of it). Definitely, this is a masterpiece and a "must" for those who love serious cinema.
Rating: Summary: Great life, Underground life! Review: This movie is full of sounds and images, sometimes you will feel that you must be there, because living Underground, is a happy living. If you have enough money buy it! The soundtrack too, of course : Ausencia, Ya Ya, Wedding Cocek, War... you have to feel them... only power from the soul of a country.
Rating: Summary: espectacular Review: Esta pelicula podria decirse que es una de los filmes mas cabrones que ha parido este siglo. Y no exagero! Las imagenes son conmovedoras, la fotografia impecable, y el soundtrack es exquisito. Definitivamente hay que verla.
Rating: Summary: brilliant, emotional, touching, fantastic acting, and music! Review: I saw this movie on TV in Ukraine in 95 or 96. I am so happy it has finally been released in the US. I absolutley wept and also roared with laughter with this transedescent picture of Yugoslavia. Maybe it's more poignant knowing the history and culture, but this is one of my favorite movies of all time. Absurd, political, funny, witty, heart-wrenching.
Rating: Summary: Fantastic! Review: THE best film I've ever seen.... and the music is Wonderful!
Rating: Summary: A bit too long. Review: An okay film. (Do you people give five stars to absolutely EVERY movie you see?) A little believability problem here: Do you really think that a hundred people would have spent twenty years in a cellar without once wanting to sneak outside for some fresh air and sunshine? Do you really think that these same people would have an extremely LOUD wedding party featuring a brass band without worrying that the Germans would hear all the ruckus and come investigate? The movie runs almost three hours long and could have been editted down. The recently released (in theatres) "Cabaret Balkan" is so much better.
