Review: The 7th Voyage of Sinbad is a spectacular print. This film is a favorite of mine. The print on this DVD is extraordinary. The colors are vibrant and the representations are incredibly sharp and clear. This is the first time you can really admire Ray Harryhausen's Special Effects in this film. They don't look blurred or fuzzy. Bernard Herrmann's score is a flashy. Kerwin Mathews is ever so stoically valiant as Sinbad. Torin Thatcher is the consummate evil sorcerer, Sokurah. I was disappointed that the DVD was not in stereo. However, the images are so good it doesn't matter.

Summary: A Voyage worth taking.....
Review: The 7th Voyage of Sinbad Ray Harryhausens first depiction of the classic hero still stands up well after over 40 years. While 3 stars may seem to shortchange this classic, I feel its justified. The effects, while outstanding, are just in their infancy. Harryhausen would improve with each new classic he created. The child actor playing the genie is also a bit dated for todays standards. Being said the classic mythical monsters, daring heroes, and sinister villains fill the screen with adventure, making this awesome family fare. The DVD version is crisp and clean, truly stunning to behold. The extra features really push this edition over the top. The Ray Harryhausen Chronicles showcases many of the great projects (including Jason and the Argonauts) this master has worked on over the years. The only drawback is that you'll have to go out and get those films as well. Not a bad price to pay. It remains a must for any Harryhausen collection.

Summary: Very Good Movie.
Review: The 7th Voyage of Sinbad was a first for Ray Harryhausen in a couple of ways. It was the first movie that he did which was shot in color. He showed that his stop motion effects worked very well in color, and it was the first movie that Ray did where Bernard Herrman scored the music. This movie started as a series of drawings that Ray made around 1949/1950. It was shopped at to various movie studios over the years before Colombia Pictures gave him the green light to go ahead with production. The whole movie in terms of the mainline shoot was done in Spain. An American production done with a Spainih film crew who were pretty good with all aspects of the shoot. From art direction to costume design. They did a pretty good job with making it look like it took place in a remote anicent time. The casting was also very good, mostly with Kerwin Matthews who was very good at facial expressions and made it look like he really was seeing fantastic monsters appear before him. Together with the music and Ray's stop motion effects, this remains as good a movie today as it was when first released in 1957.

Review: The CYCLOPS in The Schneer/Harryhausen/Juran/Hermann
"SEVENTH VOYAGE OF SINBAD" (the first one we meet)
is and always will be the best ever monster of all movies.
That Ray H. could wring such a range of emotion and character out of his creation
(and that working solo - no ILM in those Dynamation Days of Yore!)
is a testimony to his talent, determination and genius.
That this monster should appear early in the long line of COLOR
movie monsters makes it a prototype as well as an archetype.
Mark well: the balance in the thing's WALK; the body language in the TALK; the cocking of the HEAD; the licking and sneering of the LIPS; the blinking and staring of THE EYE! I can only testify to the power of this monster on (1) the big screen - I saw "Sinbad" several times as an eight-year-old at the theater - and (2) on VHS - my copy has been shared with literally DOZENS of kids (all under ten!) on many a television set. {{BUT I promise: if and when I purchase a DVD player, it will be, first of all, to see the AMAZON DVD of "7th"!}}
Finally, the pathos elicited in the cyclops in its coveting of the treasure (the lamp in particular) and in its inglorious death
combine to top KING KONG and Frankenstein's monster in the INhuman, truly unique and 'monsteriffic' behavior department.
There will never be another like the cyclops of Colossa!
PAEANS, homage and KUDOS to those who brought CYCLOPS to the screen and to our eyes, ears, and hearts!

Summary: A truly inspiring vision
Review: The DVD version of this classic film comes with many wonderful extras. In addition to the usual trailers and cast biographies, it also contains THE HARRYHAUSEN CHRONICLES, the excellent documentary that first appeared on AMC. Sound and picture quality are fine, and the color never looked better. Also having a widescreen version of the film is a joy. This was the first Harryhausen film I saw in a theater (during its 1975 re-release), and it is one of the reasons why I became an English teacher as well as a lover of fantasy and film. It is Harryhausen's truly inspiring vision of a world of wonders--I cannot recommend it enough.

Summary: Colombia/Tri-Star Home Video make Good DVDs.
Review: The film print of this DVD is of a suburb quality, the picture and sound are well done. See this in widescreen as a movie was ment to be. I can't say enough about the movie itself except that it has aged very well. The screenplay was well written, the cast of mostly little known actors did a good job, it is a very simple story of good vs evil. Ray did some of his best effects work here and Bernard Herrman's music is just as wonderful and mysterious as ever.

Summary: One of the Best, Almost better than King Kong
Review: This film inspired many directors, on movie making. The special Effects may seem old for this time and age, but believe me they effects look good and real. It has a great story. A great climax. The ending worked well. Something like a fight between The T Rex and King Kong, but instead it is a Dragon and a Cyclops.

Kerwin Mathews is ever so stoically heroic as Sinbad. Torin Thatcher is the consummate evil magician, Sokurah. Visually this is far superior to the Laser Disc version. However the Laser Disc version is in stereo. I was very disappointed that the DVD was not in stereo. However, the images are so spectacularly presented here it is almost a minor point.

Review: This film is absolutely incredible. It has amazing Ray Harryhausen effects, and wonderful Bernard Herrmann music. There is a 'feel' to this film which I have not experienced in any other one. It is a magical and romantic masterpiece.
