Summary: great film
Review: I have always treasured this film. The settings of Edinborough, then Iceland, and finally inside the earth were exotic and captivating. Was casted well, exp. James Mason as sarcastic and woman-hating Prof. Lindenbrook. Specials are still quite convincing (except maybe for the giant lizards). Perhaps best of all was Bernard Herman's music score, which is haunting and enhances the film wonderfully. Absolutely the best film from this boomers' childhood!

Summary: Certanly the best movie I have ever seen!!!
Review: I fist saw this movie when I was in third grade and i must say I loved it. I will anever regret buying it (I have seen it over 20 times). It has wonderful photograpohy with seans from the magnifivent Carlsbed Caverens ,New Mexico. True it is not compleatly fatefull to Jules Verne's novel but this dose not make it bad. I would definintly recomend not just for those who like adventure or science fiction, but to everyone!

Summary: Good Adventure Story for the Kids
Review: I remember this from my childhood watching "Family Classics" with host Frasier Thomas on WGN TV. It has some gripping adventure for the young, as the lead character races against a murderous rival to be the first to reach the center of the earth. It does plod along at some points, and you don't get to the good stuff until mid-movie, but it is worth the price of admission.

Summary: Unlike the book but it stands on its own
Review: I have not seen this film in years, but there are still few movies which I have enjoyed as much as "Journey To The Center of The Earth." It does not stick to Jules Verne's book in many ways, but this film does hold its own pleasures. One of the best films of the '50's. Outstanding special effects for the time. Many audiences of the day may think this is a stupid movie or if they simply hear the title, they may, but if you're open-minded, patient, and enjoy a good adventure story this is the one for you to watch.

Review: My parents took me to see this movie when I was a child. I loved it then and I love it now. The special effects were great for the time period. The story line was exciting and James Mason remains one of my favorite actors to this day. There's plent of excitment!!!

Review: I saw the movie in the theater when I was ten. I am still in awe of the special effects. It rivals and in most cases surpasses todays special effects (except for computer generated images). James Mason was terrific with good support from Pat Boone and Arlene Dahl. To bad that do not make them like this anymore.

Summary: Amusing and well done movie.
Review: Although the movie didn't stick to the the original book, I consider it one of the best early SF/fantasy movies from the late 50-ties. Some special effects still hold. In fact at some points it is more amusing than the book. Exceptionaly good soundtrack.Well done plot and characters. Nice photography. Worth seeing more than once.

Summary: Fine adventure for the family
Review: Although not true to Verne's original story, this film is a lot of fun. The characters are likeable, the sets and photography are very impressive and,although a bit long, rarely drags. Composer Bernard Herrman provides an excellent score. See it in stereo and widescreen.

Summary: Colourful Adventure Film
Review: "Journey To The Center Of The Earth" was a big hit when released in theatres in 1959, and it's easy to see why. This is a good, old-fashioned adventure story from that great pioneer of sci-fi/fantasy story-telling--Jules Verne.First of all, the movie looks gorgeous, and much work was put into restoring its glory for DVD. One of the extras demonstrates the difference between old video versions and the DVD in terms of picture quality--the contrast is stunning. The sound is also excellent for a film of this age and, with Bernard Herrmann's memorable score, this is important. The sets and matte paintings are top-notch, as we follow our heroes ( and a villain ) through a maze of caverns, deeper into the earth. Many obstacles are waiting for them, and there is a sense of excitement throughout. Special effects are fine for the time--years before computers and digital tricks took over--and the dimetrodon attack is justifiably famous. In terms of performances, the late James Mason towers over this movie--his enthusiastic, take-charge performance really gives this film the lift it needs. Pat Boone ? I'm sorry--good looking guy, popular singer at the time--but as an actor, he is as dynamic as a bowl of vanilla pudding. Giving him top billing over James Mason is ridiculous. Leading lady, Arlene Dahl, is fine--the way she comes out of these underground escapades looking gorgeous, is quite a feat ! The plot deviates substantially from Verne's original novel, and of course there are many liberties taken with true science ! However,the idea here is to "go with the flow", and have a good time. Some younger viewers might think that this movie takes too long before the action starts, but hopefully they will find it worth the wait ! Again this was one of the last major films from a decade where sci-fi/fantasy films blossomed. If you like the genre, this lovely DVD definitely belongs in your collection.
