Summary: BOGIE AT HIS BEST!
Review: What is interesting about my giving this movie a 5 star rating, is that it really is not one of my "favourite" movies, but there are so many things to love about the film that I couldn't give it any less. Walter Huston as a crotchety but likeable old man, that wants to get rich, but wants a little help. Tim Holt as a gloriously understated "everyman", that you can't HELP but hope that HE ends up doing alright at the end. HUMPHREY BOGART as a man who, because of his greed, gradually descends into insanity. Barton MacLane as the rotton scoundrel who tries to cheat Bogie and Holt out of their money that he owes them. Robert Blake as the cute little kid that sells the tickets. John Huston, as the man who Bogie puts "the bite" on, more than once. Bruce Bennett as a man who is fortune hunting, but for a good reason, to support his wife. Alfonso Bedoya as a cold-blooded bandito. A well written story about a very understandable thing...greed. We all have it to a certain point, but it is how we handle it that helps define us. See what I mean? There are many things to like about this movie. Bogie most CERTAINLY deserved to WIN an Academy Award for his performance in this film. Dobbs' descent into madness (as portrayed by Bogie) was so GRADUAL, that you barely even noticed it until he started talking to himself, but you were sure of it when he pointed his finger in Tim Holt's face and yelled "I know you for what you are!" I think all THREE of the major stars of this movie, Humphrey Bogart, Tim Holt, and Walter Huston (he DID get one) should have gotten Oscars. Bogie was great, Huston won the award, but without Holt to tie the whole thing together, it would not have been as poignant, I think. WATCH IT! You may not LOVE it, but you will definitely love many things about it. Oh yes, let's not forget "Badges?! We don't need no badges! We don't have to show you no stinkin' badges!!!!", the famous line spoken by Bedoya.

Summary: A timeless story and great acting.
Review: This is one of the greatest stories ever to come out of Hollywood. I never get tired of watching this masterpiece. The 3 central characters are thrown together by fate and each has their own strengths and weaknesses. We see them suffer through good times and bad and how each responds in their own unique way. A tremendous study of the human psyche. They don't make movies like this anymore because how can you even come close to this fine effort! Today's jaded audience may not even have the patience to sit through this film because there is no mind blowing special effects, cussing, sex, or graphic violence. This is a gem from the classic era when films centered around powerful acting performances playing out a great story line that made an audience think and follow along. I can't praise this movie highly enough, see it at any cost.

Review: IF EVER THE PHRASE "THEY JUST DON'T MAKE-EM LIKE THEY USED TO", THIS FILM IS IT! BOGART,HOLT,AND HUSTON(FATHER AND SON)MAKE THIS A WORK OF ART.AND THE ORIGINAL BEING SHOT IN BLACK AND WHITE MAKES IT ALL THE BETTER.EACH ONE OF THE ACTORS PLAYS THEIR PARTS PERFECTLY.THE SUPPORTING CAST, ESPECIALY ALPHONSO BEDOYA ARE JUST AS GREAT! IF ONLY TODAYS UP AND COMERS WOULD TAKE SOME GOOD 'OLE FASHIONED ADVISE-THE MOVIES OF YESTERDAY COULD BE THE BEST THING THAT EVER WAS..

Summary: POWERFUL TALE OF GREED
Review: A rather difficult movie to classify, (it takes place in 1920, so it's not a classic western which many seem to think) THE TREASURE OF SIERRA MADRE is Hollywood storytelling at it's best. The performances are uniformly excellent with Huston perhaps giving the best (he won the AA) and our man Bogie having a great time. Tim Holt was perhaps less an actor than a presence, but what a presence! Like most of John Huston's films, the movie deals with a harsh, masculine envirnment and is concerned with men under pressure. Huston's most remarkable single achievement is that he focuses all of the symbolic elements as finely as light rays through a magnifying glass! A classic excursion into men's minds, this film has had many imitators yet the original has never been duplicated. Both Walter Huston and John Huston won AA for best supporting actor and director respectively at the 1949 awards!

Summary: One of the greatest movies, ever
Review: Simply one of the greatest tales of morality, and the foibles that instant wealth brings. Much has been written about the gteat performances of Bogart and Walter Huston, the direction and screenwriting of John Huston, and the story by B Traven. Let's not forget the performance by Tim Holt, a minor star in Grade B Westerns, who gives the performance of his life as Curtin, the good guy in the story, or of Bruce Bennett, the ill-fated Cody. Alfonso Bedoya, as Gold Hat was simply perfect. Overall, one of those rare movies where all the pieces fit together like a perfectly put together jigsaw puzzle.

Summary: Perfection
Review: I always called "The Adventures of Robin Hood" (WB 1938) the one perfect film of all the motion pictures I have seen. No more. It has a companion piece in this outstanding film. All the characters are fully realized, very authentic types. The dialogue is crisp, wry and to the point. Art direction, music, photography, screenplay, acting, pacing, etc. come together under the genius of John Huston. I saw a lot of Hemingway style attitude in this film. Tim Holt was a Saturday matinee western hero at RKO, but the times he appeared in big budget films, "Treasure," "The Magnficent Ambersons," "My Darling Clementine," he showed definite ability as a very fine actor. When Curtin describes orange picking time in California, John Huston underscores it with a familiar Mexican theme. This gives the scene such a poetic dreamlike quality. The whole film is loaded with these enriching underlying moments. "Treasure of the Sierra Madre" is like music. Even after you know the story, you return to it to enjoy the sheer pleasure of its unfolding.

I'VE PERSONALLY SEEN THE FILM AT LEAST 100 TIMES IN MY LIFE (I'M ALMOST 50 ) AND I STILL ENJOY IT EVERY TIME.AND YOU KNOW SOMETHING-THERE'S NOT A SINGLE CUSS WORD OR PROFANITY AT ALL! WHICH GOES TO SHOW YOU CAN MAKE A FANTASTIC MOVIE AND LEAVE OUT THE FOUL LANGUAGE.THE CHARACTERS PLAYED BY BOGART,HOLT AND HUSTON DOES'NT SEEM LIKE IT WOULD HAVE WORKED FOR ANYONE ELSE. IF I LIVE TO BE 120,I DON'T THINK A REMAKE OF THIS FINE PICTURE COULD EVER BE MADE!

Review: This is a classic story by a mysterious author of the lengths to which human beings will be driven by greed and the folly of their efforts. Set in Mexico, Walter Huston, plays an Academy Award winning role as the old prospector. He is directed by his son, John, who appears in an interesting cameo early in the film and who also won an Oscar for this film in 1948. Robert Blake, as a child actor, plays an important part in the story. Bogart is beliveable as the greed-crazed fortune hunter.
