Summary: Remarkably wry
Review: More than half a century has passed since this little gem appeared, yet it stands the test of time. Why? Like all great humor, this comedy of errors is firmly rooted in reality. Its protagonists stand halfway between hope and fear as they lunge impulsively into their great American dream--home ownership. Anyone who has owned a home will understand the Blandings' desires, motivations, anxieties--deftly and touchingly portrayed by Grant and Loy. But Hollywood, as is its wont, substantially revised the original story. I encourage those who view this movie to follow it by reading Eric Hodgins' book. Much in the book is lost in the translation to film, yet in developing the character of Blandings' lawyer-friend Bill (brilliantly portrayed by Melvyn Douglas), the movie in some ways improves on the book, in which Bill is a marginal character. This is a movie worth watching once a year.

Summary: One of my favorite comedy films, it is funny, lots of laugh
Review: I have watched this wonderful, funny movie so often, almost once a year for years...Myrna Loy and Cary Grant are a perfect team, I will continue to see it and enjoy it always. I will add that the Money Pit is another side splitting more current version, Tom Hanks and Shelly Long another terrific duo.

Review: Cary Grant and Myrna Loy were never better together than in this delightful tale of city dwellers who find their cramped, apartment existence too confining and venture out into the no man's land of Connecticutt. Even if you've never built a home or even remodeled, you will undoubtably enjoy just watching Grant and Loy as they pick their way through the jungle of contractors and architects. The writing is superb. This is a real comedy classic, right up there with "The Egg and I". You will laugh outloud. END

Review: What a wonderful DVD to add to your classic comedy collection ! "Mr. Blandings Builds His Dream House" ( "Mr. Blandings" ) was a very timely comedy in the late 1940s, when many young couples were looking to buy a home. When you buy that first house--be it new or "previously enjoyed"--it's amazing sometimes how many unforeseen problems can arise that result in more and more bills ! I'm sure that, even today, many of us can identify with the hurdles faced by the couple in "Mr. Blandings".Cary Grant stars as advertising whiz, Jim Blandings. He lives in a cramped New York apartment with his wife ( marvellous Myrna Loy ),two young daughters, and live-in maid ( Louise Beavers ). Tired of battling for time in the bathroom, closet space, privacy etc., he decides to look into acquiring a house, preferably out in the country, away from the Manhattan rat race.
He and his wife are shown an old house in the beautiful Connecticut countryside--and--definitely throwing caution to the wind--and--without consulting his best friend/lawyer ( a droll, sardonic Melvyn Douglas )--they buy the place. It would be unfair to reveal more of the plot--let's just say that the house can be described as a "fixer-upper" ! This is a perfect role for Cary Grant--he is, as ever, suave, charming and funny, as well as embarrassed, befuddled and frustrated when facing one problem after another. His reactions, double-takes and expressions of incredulity are priceless. As Mrs. Blandings, Myrna Loy again proves that she is one of the great leading ladies of film--witty, sophisticated, smart and beautiful--her character is a full partner to her husband, rather than just a "rose in his lapel". By all accounts, Ms. Loy would not have had it any other way.
Melvyn Douglas also registers as the Blandings' lawyer, who--just to spice things up even more--was one of Mrs. Blandings old beaux from her college days. Supporting players are all fine, including "B" movie stalwart, Nestor Paiva, and--soon to be the screen's next Tarzan--Lex Barker. The DVD exhibits a clear B & W image. Extras include quite a few trailers for other Cary Grant films, two radio shows with Cary, and a delightful, colour Tex Avery cartoon, "House of Tomorrow". So--take a witty script--sharp direction--add Cary Grant, Myrna Loy and Melvyn Douglas--and you have a real winner. Highly recommended !

Summary: Spam, Or Is That Wham?!
Review: Oh, funny, funny, funny. This movie is kind of about "Wham", a canned meat product and how it changes the lives of an oridnary family, well, if you'd consider having Cary Grant and Myrna Loy in your family as ordinary. Okay, the Wham thing is really just the wall paper that gives Cary something to fret about, besides the house he and his wife are building in the country. Cary Grant is a big city advertising guy trying to come up with a new campaign for Wham, while simultaneously build his dream house with Myrna Loy, whose calm demeanor plays well against Grant's constant state of distress and/or panic! You realize that this new house is going to be a money pit when, well, when they buy it. There are troubles with the foundation, the plans to rebuild, the well digging, and that annoying upstairs closet, that seems to lock itself whenever occupied. There are also two frighteningly mature young daughters, a lawyer best friend from college who once dated Myrna,and a well thought out supporting cast. In black and white and a bit dated, perhaps, in some repsects, for anyone who has ever bought, or thought of buying a fixer-upper, or a new house for that matter, this movie is still very relevant in a comedic sense.
