Review: One of my favorite movies of all time. I grew up watching Cary Grant, and I must say that this is one of his best. This movie keeps me and my entire family in stitches the whole way through. It is a movie we can watch again and again and never get tired of it. I definitely reccommend it if you like to laugh, this one will have you in tears!!!!

Summary: Great chemistry between Grant and Loy
Review: I found this movie to be very amusing. Cary Grant is in his element as the distgruntled Mr. Blandings. Myrna Loy was also at her best in this movie. I found the dialogue to be very natural and witty and the situation very funny. I definitely recommend this movie to anyone who is a Grant or Loy fan, or anyone who likes classic movies. This is definitely a must-see movie.

Review: This gentle comedy evokes more amusement than outright belly laughs, but it does so in such a genial and friendly way that it is one of my favorites. Even if I catch the film in the middle I have to watch it all the way through because I enjoy the evident chemistry between the stars, (Cary Grant, Myrna Loy and Melvyn Douglas), and their light touch and easy charm captivates you and draws you into the story. They play decent people and you sense that they were decent people themselves.Anyone who has ever built a house will relate to the story of a New York adman building his dream house in Connecticut, and the frustrations and setbacks along the way as one thing after the other keeps sending the cost up. The rest of us can laugh as the city slicker is had by the country rubes while at the mercy of every tradesman and contractor. Cary Grant's timing was a marvel, and this is great work here. Myrna Loy matches him perfectly. And Melvyn Douglas's laid back, wise and cynical friend/lawyer, the perfect counterpoint. Douglas's wry narration is key to the film's humor. Like a very humorous anecdote a friend might tell you, Blandings is a wry folk-tale with a twinkle in its eye. It never fails to make me chuckle, and it evokes a kinder, gentler era and a time when wit could find amusement in something besides bodily functions. "Means we gotta blast!" 4-1/2 Stars and worthwhile.

Summary: Mr. Blandings Makes A Great Comedy
Review: I first heard of this movie when it was named by the AFI as one of the funniest American comedies of all-time. This is allegedly the 72nd funniest movie you will ever see. "Mr. Blandings Builds His Dream House" has an awful lot going for it. First you have a wonderful cast including Cary Grant, Myrna Loy and Melvyn Douglas. And a script written by Melvin Frank and Norman Panama. And if your a Bob Hope fan you should know those two names. They are two of Hope's most trusted writers. They wrote such films as "Monsieur Beaucaire", "My Favorite Blonde" and two of the road pictures. "Utopia" and "Hong Kong". The basic premise of the movie is a couple (played by Grant & Loy) wants to move out of their small Manhattan apartment and build their own dream house. It may sound simple but it sure isn't simple for Grant and Loy to reach their goal. It's mishaps after mishaps. And they find themselves spending more and more money on a house they already can't afford. What I like best about the movie is the way everything is played serious. No matter what is happening the actors never act like they know what they are doing is funny. And that just makes it even more funny. Grant was a wonderful comedic actor. Most people may think of him as a serious actor but he did comedy just as well. Watch him in "Bringing Up Baby", "Arsenic and Old Lace" & one of my favorites "The Awful Truth". Myrna Loy is no slouch either. She of course is best known for the "Thin Man" series but appeared in several other comedies as well like "Libeled Lady", and "Third Finger, Left Hand" (Melvyn Douglas co-starred). I'm really not familiar with the director H.C. Potter. I've only seen two films he directed. "The Story of Vernon & Irene Castle" and "The Miniver Story". Neither I feel is a great movie. Especially "The Miniver Story". It's nowhere near as great as the original. But nonetheless he does as nice job directing this movie. He keeps a nice pace going along. The movie is about 95 minutes. So it moves briskly and nothing "feels" left out. If you like any of the actors in this movie or like old fashion comedies "Mr. Blandings Builds His Dream House" will turn out to be a treat. Bottom-line: Very funny Cary Grant Myrna Loy comedy. Moves along nicely and has several memorable moments. Worth watching if you like old comedies.

Review: Being an architect and having built a house, I find this movie hilariously accurate. It should be required viewing for anyone contemplating building a house -- if nothing else, it will prepare you to seek out the humor you'll need to survive the process. And if you just like vintage Hollywood films, this is a keeper -- Cary Grant is outstanding! PS -- The book is as funny as the movie. Get both and enjoy!

Summary: My favorite film--period!
Review: This is one of the most entertaining films I've ever seen. It's the kind of film that I will stop to watch every time I see it on one of the movie channels. The humor runs from slapstick to subtle, mostly the latter, and the interplay between the stars is simply magnificent. The best bit is the scene involving instructing the painter which colors go where in Grant's new house. If this isn't put on DVD soon, someone is making a big mistake.

Summary: Absolutely Delightful!
Review: This is one of my family's favorites...I was even lucky enough to find a copy of the book at a used library book sale a few years back. (My husband found it wrapped under the Christmas tree that year!) The subject matter, the direction, tone and true talent of the performers is absolutely wonderful! This was the inspiration for the movie "The Money Pit" with Tom Hanks and Shelley Long, which we also love, but "Mr. Blandings" stands on its own as a classic. Is this a joke? Or perhaps only he is...What a pompous phony! Thank goodness the rest of us regular people are still able to think for ourselves! "Mr. Blandings" is one of the best - they truly don't make 'em like this any more!
