Summary: Been There, Done That
Review: Cary Grant and Myrna Loy have a very comfortable chemistry together in this comedy about a couple that decides to get out of their cramped city apartment and move out into the country. Through stubborness and sheer ignorance, they end up making a number of expensive errors as they attempt to build their dream house. The story is narrated by their friend and lawyer Bill, well played by Melvyn Douglas, a cynical man who learns it's easier to just let them make their mistakes. Grant is the perfect actor to express the exasperation of the whole process. The man had amazing comedic timing, deceptively making it look easy. The script hits all of the potential problems with building, and the film is smoothly produced. This is the kind of comedy that will appeal to most people, because almost everyone has had the opportunity to experience the joy that is remodelling, landscaping, decorating, or building. There's something in here for everyone to appreciate.

The Blanding's are looking for their dream house. They end up buying a 170 year old house for 5 times more than it is worth. The trouble starts when the house shows its age and has to be torn down...This movie is based on a book by the same name written by Eric Hodgins. This is Cary Grant's 52nd movie, his third with Myrna Loy; the others being WINGS IN THE DARK in 1935, and THE BACHELOR AND THE BOBBY-SOXER in 1947. Cary had just met Betsy Drake aboard the Queen Mary on his return trip from England, and she came to join him in California as he did this film. Mr. Blandings Builds His Dream House stars Cary Grant and Myrna Loy as a New York couple attempting to leave the bustle of Manhattan for their dream house in the country. This is a cute story about the trials and tribulations of building a new home. The Blandings lived in New York City and in order to get away from the hustle and bustle, they decided to build a home in Connecticut. It is Murphy's Law, and everything that can go wrong, goes wrong. The film begins in the overcrowded apartment occupied by the Blandings family... parents and two daughters. Wife wants to redecorate, husband doesn't want to spend thousands on an apartment, so soon they are buying an old house in Connecticut.
The old house they buy, thinking of it as their dream house, soon shows itself to be a nightmare and has to be torn down. Soon they are busy planning to build a new house, and this is where the fun really begins! Things begin to go wrong from the start, when the the old house is torn down without the former owner's permission and he demands full payment on the mortgage. The "dream house" building takes on a life of its own, where everything that could go wrong, or cost more money, does. The whole thing seems almost out of control. Things work out in the end and the Blandings end up happy in their house, but the trials and tribulations they suffer along the way are something to watch and enjoy!! Cary and Myrna were very comfortable with each other and it shows on the screen. This movie was filmed in sequence, which is hardly ever done in movie making. This is a great movie for the family and if you are deciding to build a new home. Cary is at his greatest with his portrayal as a frustrated advertising man. I believe that Cary had three different careers: One from 1932 to 1937, when he played mostly cast-off roles and mediocre roles; then his second career from 1937, starting with THE AWFUL TRUTH, and ending with DREAM WIFE in 1953, when he decided to quit films, and then his third career, when Alfred Hitchcock lured him back to film making in 1955 with TO CATCH A THIEF, co-staring Grace Kelly, until his last film in 1966, WALK, DON'T RUN.
With MR. BLANDINGS, he was in the middle of his second career, most attractive, and by this time was able to select his scripts and control much of what he was doing on the screen. This film is timeless and will no doubt be popular for all time.

Summary: Better than the book for laughs!
Review: Still remains one of my all time favorites! Loy and Grant are in their prime and couldn't be funnier. The script carves all the humor out of the original book and then pumps it up a notch. The clever background sound effects add alot too! It may be incredibly dated, but some stuff never goes out of style, like great writing, acting and a good story to tell. The more recent remake "The Money Pit" doesn't even come close to the original. This is entertainment at its best, folks, don't miss this one.

Review: This movie is one of my all time favorites. Let me tell you why...the narration by Melvyn Douglas is superb as he details the Blandings family's(Cary Grant and Myrna Loy) transition from New York co-op to Connecticut dream house. The chemistry between Cary and Myrna,and Melvyn, makes this charming film a must-see for anyone who has ever purchased something with their heart rather than their head.

Summary: Spam, Or Is That Wham?!
Review: Oh, funny, funny, funny. This movie is kind of about "Wham", a canned meat product and how it changes the lives of an oridnary family, well, if you'd consider having Cary Grant and Myrna Loy in your family as ordinary. Okay, the Wham thing is really just the wall paper that gives Cary something to fret about, besides the house he and his wife are building in the country. Cary Grant is a big city advertising guy trying to come up with a new campaign for Wham, while simultaneously build his dream house with Myrna Loy, whose calm demeanor plays well against Grant's constant state of distress and/or panic! You realize that this new house is going to be a money pit when, well, when they buy it. There are troubles with the foundation, the plans to rebuild, the well digging, and that annoying upstairs closet, that seems to lock itself whenever occupied. There are also two frighteningly mature young daughters, a lawyer best friend from college who once dated Myrna,and a well thought out supporting cast. In black and white and a bit dated, perhaps, in some repsects, for anyone who has ever bought, or thought of buying a fixer-upper, or a new house for that matter, this movie is still very relevant in a comedic sense.

Review: While this film is not exactly the best from Cary Grant, it remains enjoyable, and is easily worth all of the stars that have been given. The film was directed by H.C. Potter. It has some great lead stars, with Cary Grant, Myrna Loy and Melvyn Douglas. It dates back to 1948, and was from the great studio, that gave us so many wonderful movies (notably the Fred and Ginger series) RKO Radio Pictures. A comedy for all the family to enjoy. The plot of the story is basically, that the Blanding's family are looking for a new home, their 'dream' home. They buy a house that is 170 years, or something, old. They pay way too much for it, compared to what the house is really worth. Everything starts to go wrong from here on-in, and the house ends up getting torn down. They then start planning to build a new home, finding trouble all along the way (which makes the movie a lot of fun). I can recommend this movie, especially if you are a Cary Grant fan, or just simply love to watch classic movies (since we all know modern ones are useless).

Often imitated but never quite surpassed, Mr. Blandings Builds His Dream House is a classic comedy about a topic still as current now as it was in the 1940s. Essentially, Mr. Blandings Builds His Dream House is about a family that decides to move to the country and get away from the overcrowding in the apartment. Instead of making life easier, however, their decision to move causes disaster after disaster. This movie is a hilarious example of how whatever can go wrong will! Although the topic could have easily degenerated into stupidity, the script, the directing and, most of all, the cast, turn the movie into a classic. The script is witty and very funny, and it is directed with style - but mainly, Cary Grant is terrific! His double takes and reactions will never be equaled...any scene that he is in is pretty much guaranteed to be hysterical. Myrna Loy does a good job of cooling balancing Grant's screwball character, and the supporting cast is good as well. Anyhow, this is a funny movie for the whole family - it is highly recommended!

Review: This is my all-time favorite Cary Grant movie! I have watched this one over and over again and always laugh each time I see it. And nobody was ever any better at describing room colors other than Myrna Loy! I can't wait for this to be released being I have waited so long for the DVD to come out. A must have for anyone who is a big fan of classic movies!

Summary: LOVE IT!!
Review: There are few movies that I will watch multiple times. I have seen this on cable and when it came out on VHS several years back, I picked it up. If you have ever built or remodeled a house, you will chuckle through the entire movie. Anything that could go wrong, did! I laughed at this long before I bought my own home, and laugh at his "luck" more now that I have experienced first hand being "handled" by some contractors. I showed the video to my brother (a real estate broker) and he laughed also. If you love old movies, this one is not well known, but should be!!

Review: i just have to say that this is a great movie. When i bought my copy in the early 90s i got the colorized version. i have tried to find it in color again, but its not to be found. if you are lucky enough to find it or see it colorized, it is great .
