Summary: BEST OF THE BEST!!!
Review: Hailed by many (myself included) as the greatest creature feature of all time, King Kong is a true masterwork of cinema. Made to save RKO Studio from bankruptcy, it successfully tackles multiple themes in an enjoyable story that even most non-monster junkies will like. Set from New York City to an uncharted isle and back again, the marvelous settings and relatable cast made audiences laugh and scream around the world in the scariest movie to date (especially the little known spider footage.) Released four times between 1933 and 1952, much of the footage was removed from the film by censors, though most of it was restored in 1971. Willis O"Brien's special effects stunned the viewers and continues to impress today, and Max Steiner's score gives one the full intensity of the action and drama alike. The exiting and emotional ending left few dissapointed and the film closed in one of the greatest closing lines ever, ("It was beauty killed the beast.") King Kong is an undeniable masterpiece and has yet to be outdone.

Summary: The movie has really aged well.
Review: Well King Kong has aged quite well as a movie largely because the film makers worked hard to make it look good and have a story that would keep an audience interested in the story from the first frame of film to the last image. The Cast; A lot is made of Fay Wray being the girl that steals Kong's heart and she is in the movie almost all the time. But the movie really belongs more to Robert Armstrong's charecter (Carl Denhamm). It's his charecter that really gets the story going. He;s a film maker who wants to make money off of Kong, and his actions endanger the whole crew in the process, but he is not terrible guy. In fact as film goes along, he kind of turns from a greedy man into someone who is humbled by the experience and grows as a result of it. Special effects: Kong and the dinosaurs of Skull Island were brought to life by the effects work of Wills O' Brien and he does a good job with the tools of stop motion models that were available then. The movie also benefits from the music score by Max Steiner which keeps the action going at a fast rate. Finally the key aspect of this movie is the black and white photography. It maintains the film's mix of mystery, suspence, and feeling as the movie goes from Kong's first apperance on Skull Island to the top of the Empire State Building. It's not a surprise that King Kong was among the first movies to be restored in film preservation efforts using ditigal technology. Both picture and sound quality make the movie as good as the day it was made.

Summary: Where is the DVD?
Review: "King Kong" single-handedly saved RKO Studios from extinction. I cannot believe that a super, classic movie that was way ahead of its time in effects has not been released on DVD. I grew up watching Kong every time it was shown on "Million Dollar Movie" in New York. As a counterpoint, I saw the remake once in the theater and then I went back to the original. I bought the VHS version from Amazon last year and, at the rate I am going, I will wear it out by next year. There is no reason to repeat the plot here as it is related elsewhere. If you are in a position do get this transferred to DVD, here is one fan waiting for it.

Summary: Historical Accuracy?
Review: It makes me laugh when I see some people talking about the inaccuracy of the dinosaurs attacking the people like flesh eaters when they were vegetarians. Any of you live during these dinosaurs lifetime? Any of the supposed authorities on dinosaurs live then? No didn't think so, so it is all conjecture as to how they would have reacted to tasty little flesh morsel running around pricking and stinging them with noisy little sticks in their territory. You people have way to much time on your hands if you worry about the accuracy of creatures in a SCIENCE FICTION or FANTASY movie that is seventy years old. In case you don't know FICTION and FANTASY means unreal or untrue. So give it a rest if they bend the rules a little. I hope you are around seventy years from now when they poke all kinds of fun at the Jurassic Park movies and criticize the inaccuracies.

Summary: Father of SciFi
Review: This has to be the father of Scifi. Consider this movie was made in 1933. The stop motion animation of Willis O'Brien can not be better. To this day most people are amazed with the special effects, cast, sets, story, direction, and music. As one reviewer astutely wrote it is an incredible look at the lifes of common people of the 30s. Is it any wonder that it is a classic and usually rated in the top one hundred of all time SciFi favorite polls. The only question is why isn't this incredible classic, that even the American Film Institute recognizes in a special on Heroes and Villains, isn't on DVD yet? This is one of those movies that can be watched time and time again and you never tire of it. You catch something new each time. I am always intently watching this movie, the parts where they are tracking Kong in the jungle is an unforgettable adventure and horror. If you haven't watched it in several months or even a year it is all the more entertaining when you see it again. When I think of those movies ahead of their time I always think of this and The Wizard of Oz.

Summary: That delicate, satin-draped frame...
Review: A wonderful experience: the 90-odd minutes rocks along with all of the suspense and excitement you'd get from any Crichton wannabe, and the stop-motion animation on the gorilla is quite outstanding: the special effects team did labour the point a little (there were three longish set pieces between Kong and a prehistoric animal coveting Fay Wray), but King Kong's final scene atop the Empire State Building is tremendously affecting. As is Wray's performance throughout: she is a sultry, brooding, juicily erotic presence while all the men about her are losing their heads and focussing their testosterone on what to my eyes was quite the wrong target!

Review: I THINK THIS MOVIE IS GREAT. THE SPECIAL EFFECTS IN THIS MOVIE IS BEFORE ITS TIME, I THINK THAT IS WHY I LIKE IT SO MUCH. IT SHOULD HAVE BEEN RELEASED BEFORE THE NEW KONG.

Review: Just about everything that one can say about this terrific film has already been said. One thing that keeps appearing, either in the customer reviews or in the many articles written about "King Kong" is the comment that Skull Island is in the Pacific Ocean.
The island is southwest of Indonesia (then called the Dutch East Indies) which places it in the Indian Ocean.

Summary: A classic work of world literature
Review: Most great works of world literature can all be traced, I believe to either The Bible or Homer's Odyssey. When closely scrutinized, all classic works contain some sort of quest. That quest can either be for the truth or to return home. The original King Kong, is not only one of the finest fantasy films ever made, but a great piece of literature because it encompasses those two quests. Granted, many of the film's elements have dated. Certainly that is the case with some the hammy, overwrought, stereotyped and even at times wooden performances. In our "enlightened", post Marlon Brando-Actor's Studio, age of acting appreciation I think we are all to eager to lay such a criticism on films from that quaint period known as the 1930's. And even though Kong gives the best performance in the film, the actors do their job and tell a believable and captivating story. Filmmaker Carl Denham's quest for truth and his odyssey is what fantasy films are all about: a journey into a fantastic and strange new world. His desired exploitation of that savage and innocent world is what tragedy is all about. Kong's quest for safety and dominance in his natural habitat makes for a great metaphor for our modern age. So many of us have been uprooted by forces seemingly beyond our control and we all want to find our place back where we came from. Unfortunately that quest often leeds again to tragic results, Kong, unlike Dorothy ( a story that obviously greatly influenced the screenwriters of Kong), dies. So much has been already written about this great influential film, nothing I say here will be original or enlightening necessarily. It is just that in this day and age of CGI and garbage like ID4, Armeggedon, Wild Wild West, XXX, and so on it is (or at least once was possible) to use special effects to enhance a story as opposed to letting the screen technology engulf any semblance of humanity. And also too . . . please release this in a gloriously remastered DVD. Please.

Summary: The Eighth Wonder of the WORLD!
Review: Happy 70th Birthday to King Kong which was first screened in March of 1933 in New York City. What can you say about this quintessential American film. Phenomenal! The King Kong team did a great job in making an audience care about the fate of a giant ape. Simply the best film ever! A must have on DVD.
