Summary: Cooper shines!
Review: For anyone sick of the "nauseating MTV culture," then this is the movie for you. It perfectly portrays American culture and values in a way that is entertaining and meaningful. Gary Cooper is perfectly cast as Alvin York and gives an Academy Award winning performance. Though Coop was 40 when this was made and is obviously too old for the part (and his Southern accent isn't so good), his acting skills carry him through.

Walter Brennan, always outstanding in any role, supports brilliantly and Joan Leslie is believable as York's girlfriend.

Yes, this movie is sappy and contrived in spots, but it's wonderful anyway. The musical score is also memorable and integrated well throughout the film. If you love Gart Cooper or American, it's hard not to like this movie.

Summary: Sgt. York
Review: Most will agree that Cooper in Sgt. York and Cagney in Yanky Doodle Dandy contributed greatly to America's eagerness to enter World War Two. That these two movies (and Goodbye Mr. Chips) did more to get us into that war than any other films of the time can be verified by reading Desperate Deception and Empire of Their Own.

The transition of a pacifist religious peasant into a bemedaled hero is told with tremendous skill in Sgt. York. An isolationist village and its hardworking youth become representations of all of America and our duty to help save the world. The fact that our involvement in WWI brought us WWII as well as the eventual loss of most of europe to post WWII Soviet domination of course is not in the film. But remembering what happened AFTER WWII should be contrasted with every sentimental twinge evoked by Sgt. York. Glorification of war and this shade of heroism has cost us dearly.

Summary: An Unlikely Hero
Review: Sergeant York traces the life of the real Alvin York from rebellious youth in remote Tennessee, through his religious conversion and status as a conscientious objector, to World War I hero. The film is a little corny and too "homespun" at times, but it succeeds in large part due to the very effective performance of Gary Cooper, who is never anything but believable in all the stages of York's life. Walter Brennan delivers his usual good supporting performance as Cooper's moral mentor, and Margaret Wycherly is quiet and sweetly amusing as Cooper's calm, ever patient mother. But it's Cooper's movie, and he makes the most of it, making Alvin York a hero to be admired and respected. This movie must have played well to audiences during World War II when it was released, and it still plays well today.

Summary: Common man becomes war hero.
Review: A movie about overcoming impossible odds. Gary Cooper plays the role of a perfect gentleman and hero. Mister Cooper had a screen presence that cannot be matched. His acting skills can reach out to anyone and let you live in the moment. This great movie can be a true inspiration.

Review: This movie isn't about war but one's conviction to the lords word. Instead of buying the bottom land, the lord made it possible to be his by doing what he had to do. As a feloow tennesseean this movie has meant more to me than any other. I'll bet you'll agree when you see the whole picture.
