Summary: A Real Classic
Review: The High and the Mighty has always been one of my - if not my - favorite movie. I remember watching it as a kid, and would always look for it on TV whenever it was shown. It is a classic airline disastor movie with high suspense and wonderful charactor development. This is John Wayne at his best, and even though you know it has to have a happy ending, you still are on the edge of your seat everytime you see this movie. I am lucky enough to have a VHS copy that I taped from the TV years ago, but would love to see it released on DVD. I don't know why this particular movie is still under a legal gun, but I hope someone comes to their senses and lets it be released so all can enjoy.

Review: "Ship of Fools" takes to the air. One of John Wayne's all-time best. Fantastic script and unforgetable score. This one should have been available years ago!

Summary: please reprise this movie
Review: One of the best era movies, has everything from post-war shows... Adventure, romance, suspense, thrill, danger, love, and the sense of responsibility missing today...........Read the book, first, one of the few movies that is close to the script......... Ernest Gann, under the same title. One of the "Dukes" best, and partly helped Robert Stacks' career. Well done.

Summary: BEST FILM
Review: I have been waiting for some 20 years for this film to be released on VHS. I don't have a DVD, but my kids do. This is the original airplane disaster movie, which many people have tried to copy, but have not been able to get together anything like the cast and the story in this one.

Not having seen the film since it's release to the theaters, I'm sure the effects will be archaic - all the more for anyone not having seen it to view an absolutely absorbing movie about seemingly real people thinking they are about to die.

I'll remember that final whistle til the day I die.

Summary: MUSIC IN THE AIR !
Review: This is intended as a footnote to the header review by Valencia. The film is a terrific ride from start to finish, with an excellent cast and a magnificent score by Dimitri Tiomkin. Alas, I believe that is the reason why we haven't seen this great film in years. The score, and the title song were both nominated for Oscars. The score won the Oscar....the song didn't. ("Three Coins in the Fountain" won that year.) Some time afterwards, another composer accused Dimitri Tiomkin of plagarising his own work.....I can't remember who this was i'm afraid. The outcome being that Warners had to withdraw the film from circulation until the matter was sorted out. As we've never seen the film since, one can only assume that it's an ongoing situation, although I would imagine that who ever brought the complaint is long gone now (as is Tiomkin). They can show the FILM folks....but NOT with it's beautiful score, and, as anyone who has ever seen the film will tell you, the score is one of the Stars of the film. Here's hoping the problem gets sorted soon as there are a heck of a lot of people who can't wait to see this terrific film again...especially on DVD.

Summary: The High and the Mighty
Review: One of John Wayne's best. This movie has it all - intrigue, suspense, mystery, action, huge cast of well known actors and a great sound track. If you haven't seen it you haven't seen John Wayne at his best!

Summary: Probably the best aviation movie ever made.
Review: The story is about a flight from Hawaii to the mainland USA on board a Douglas DC4. True to the genre of disaster movies, the movie concentrates on the stories of the people on board the aircraft. Each person has a story about why they are on board. All the while that the plane is having its problems, the conflicts rise with the passengers and the flight crew. In the end, to survive, everyone has to band together. A little known bit part is played by Carl (Alfalfa) Switzer of Little Rascals fame, as a copilot of a rescue aircraft. John Wayne plays the DC4's copilot, who has the experience what should have put him in the pilot's seat, but a past event has held him back. However, he deals with it - especially with his famous whistling tune! He is also the one who first suspects a problem with the aircraft and, in the end, is the one who keeps everyone together in the fight for survival. The movie is technically accurate, as much as can be expected from Hollywood. The suspense will keep you on the edge of your seat. If there is ever a must see movie, a true classic in every sense of the word, this one is it.

Summary: The High and the Mighty
Review: I last saw this movie on TV with my parents in 1964 and to this day, I will never forget it. I know that it was a particular favorite of my parents. It was so exciting and the theme music and sound track were so haunting and beautiful---it brought chills to me then and even recently, when I saw a retrospective on the films of William Wellman.

Approximately three years ago, I asked Turner Classic movie channel if they would show this movie and their reply was that they were in negotiation with the Wayne Estate on that very subject. They projected that it would be shown in August of that year---well something must have happened, because it was never shown. TCM never responded to my inquiries, but I read somewhere where Michael Wayne's house suffered flood damage and the film negative of the High and The Mighty suffered water damage. Was it irrepairably damaged or is it undergoing restoration? I've never heard.

Summary: Waiting to Give
Review: I was VERY young when I saw this movie and in all honesty, I don't really remember it. What I do remember however is the impression it left on my father, a devoted John Wayne fan. He loved the movie, but to this day refuses to board a plane. Is there a connection? I don't know, but I do know he has been waiting a LONG time for this wonderful movie to be released. I would like to be able to give it as a gift to him, and have my own copy as well. My point being, I really hope this movie is released during a time when the original "movie-goers" are still here to enjoy it, as they did so long ago.
