Summary: ONE OF THE GREATEST OF ALL-TIME!
Review: BOGART AT HIS BEST SINCE CASABLANCA, HEPBURN (THE GREATEST FEMALE ACTRESS EVER) MAKES THIS MOVIE. A MUST SEE FOR ANY "CLASSICS" FAN.

Rating: 5 stars
Summary: BRILLIANTLY DONE, GRANDLY ACTED, SUBERBLY DIRECTED
Review: wONDERFUL IN EVERY WAY, MY NOMINEE FOR THE BEST FILM OF ALL TIME. STORY OF HUMPHREY BOGART AND KATHARINE HEPBURN SAILING DOWN THE RIVER IN WW1, OVERCOMING NATRURE, GERMANS, AND OF COURSE, EACH OTHER IS CLASSIC. HEPURN AND BOGART ARE SINCERE AND UNFORGETTABLE, SEAMLESS DIRECTION, GORGEOUS LOCATIONS, TERRIFIC SCRIPT. A+!

Summary: A very good film but slightly flawed
Review: I enjoy watching the African Queen but find the comic-opera portrayal of the Germans at the end spoils it. It's a mistake to get too serious about entertainment, but read something about the campaign - even a novel like The Ghosts of Africa - to see what I mean. I feel if the Germans' point of view were given a little more seriously - as Forester gives it in the novel - the film would have more depth all round.

Summary: This movie is almost as good as the book
Review: Like reading Gone with the Wind, i.e., Gable as Butler and Leigh as Scarlett and One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, i.e., Nicholson as McMurtry, while reading African Queen, you could just see Bogart as Mr. Olnutt and Miss Hepburn as the missionary's daughter. I never liked Miss Hepburn that much, but in this, she was great. It's such a great love story--the last kind of personalities you would expect to fall in love--I love movies where people fall in love in adversity. And it wasn't sappy.

Summary: Classic Bogie, Classic Kate, Classic Huston!
Review: One of the truly great adventure/romances of all time. The Chemistry between Bogart and Hepburn is always fun to watch as they journey down the Congo river on their way to destroying a German battleship whilst getting to know each other then falling in love along the way. Great scenery, great story based on C.S. Forester's novel, and great repartee between the two veteran leads. The last great collaboration between Bogie and John Huston, "Beat the Devil" in 1954 being a satirical trifle at best.

Summary: Great hardship brings great entertainment!
Review: Bogart only did it because he owed a favor to Huston. Hepburn wrote of her experiences filming this movie in a book subtitled, "How I went to Africa with Bogart, Bacall and Huston and almost lost my mind." Hard to believe such hardship, suffering, and sickness could result in such a beautiful film as this. No pretensions about cultural or political comment, allegorical connections, sermons, or--thank the Almighty--a photographer's piece. This is just a simple, and brilliant, mix of adventure, character, and humor. Even with all of the superb jungle backgrounds, (another Jack Cardiff triumph) the real beauty of the film lies in its gentle portrait of it's disparate leading characters; and the lyrical unfolding of their inevitable attraction to one another. Don't let this description fool you; it's also great fun. Bogart and Hepburn at their most winning; generous helpings of laughter, tenderness, romance, and high adventure make it all go down smooth and satisfying. It also jumps right into the action, with no stops or wrong turns along the way (no pun intended...you'll find out). A poem of a film!

Summary: One of the top 50 films of all time.
Review: If you have a video library, this one must be in it. A small cast, a low budget, but a great fillm based in wartime Africa and the problems two people have in trying to elude the Germans. A great ending, too! This video rates right up there with "Treasure of Sierra Madre." Well directed, great acting, and superb photography. Invite your friends over, put on the popcorn, and sit back and enjoy. Oh, yes. Take the phone off the hook.

Summary: Wonderful Movie!
Review: This movie has it all: a good plot, action, adventure, suspense, drama, humor, romance, and outstanding acting. Kate and Bogey ARE Rosie and Charlie. Men will like it because it's an action/adventure comedy/drama. Women will like it because it's a touching love sory. A real treat for anyone.

Summary: Kate & Bogey Sparkle in this Classic Hollywood Gem
Review: The chemistry between "old maid" missionary woman Hepburn and rough-guy Bogart streaming along a river together in WWI Africa is great. Through many perils the two manage to survive until they are captured by Enemy Germans who are about to execute the pair as spies. The ending of this Hollywood Classic is extremely satisfying.

Humphrey Bogart won his only Oscar for his role, while Katherine Hepburn chalked up another one of her 12 career nominations. This film is pure cinema-candy. How can anyone NOT love this movie??? Highly recommended.*****
