Summary: Captivating, Wonderful, Adventurous and Heartwrenching
Review: This movie captured me from the very beginning. It is the story of a young, rich, spoiled, neglected boy who tries to fit in but can't seem to. Attempting to purchase friendship, by his father's riches and influence, only manages to buy confusion and a closed door. The father, forced to spend time with his son, because of the boy's mischief, takes him on a business trip. While enroute, aboard ship, the boy falls overboard and is picked up by a Portuguese fisherman in a skiff. This fisherman delivers him to the main fishing vessel where his lessons in life begin. Growing up aboard a fishing vessel with my father during my early years, made this movie really hit home with me. The main difference being that my father did not have time for me as Manuel did for Harvey. I cried my eyes out and couldn't stop. I tried to make sure that I was the perfect father to my children, but even with all my insight, sensitivity and carefulness, still found my self lacking. This movie makes you feel for the child in you, your children and every other child who needs love and attention, desperately.

Summary: A must see for children from 6 thru adulthood
Review: This movie has fallen away from recent viewing, but it sends a great message to kids as well as being an outstanding and exciting film. Spencer Tracey won an academy award, and roles played by Lionel Barrymore Sr., Mickey Rooney ,John Carridine and Melvin Douglas make this worthwhile viewing. It should have a resurgency for those who enjoy classic films.

Summary: A True Classic for it's Day. .. and today
Review: This movie is a favorite of mine. I hope that someday it will indeed be released in DVD format. I'll be waiting. Obviously dated, it is still an excellent movie and it really gets to me. I guess it's just one of those movies for me. I can't rate it high enough.

Summary: Not Enough Mickey Rooney
Review: This movie is a great story, but Mickey Rooney did not have enough part in this film. He is only seen a couple times for a brief moment. I bought this film hoping to see more of him since he is my favorite actor and was sorely disappointed. Spencer Tracy is just great in this movie. This is one of Spencer Tracy's best performances. So, if you are a Tracy fan I would highly recommend this movie. Freddie Barthomew was outstanding and was the main character of the movie. So, I say all that to say this. It's a great movie, but if you are a Mickey Rooney fan you will be sorry not to see him in the movie often.

Summary: TIMELESS
Review: While making CAPTAINS COURAGEOUS, a typical MGM prestige production of the late thirties, director Victor Fleming managed to stay faithful to the original Kipling story of a spoiled young boy who learns moral virtue molded out of adversity. Spencer Tracy was great in his role of Manuel the Portuguese fisherman (he won the AA for best actor of 1937) and Freddie Bartholomew scores strong as the spoiled, obnoxious Harvey who learns about strength and redemption through suffering. An excellent family film from Hollywood's Golden Age.
